Everyone's hair is different, as such one woman's regimen won't work 100% for someone else, however, there are things we can all learn from each other that's why we created the Queen of Kinks, Curls & Coils Feature Profiles (Queen of Kinks, in brief).

Each featured Queen answers the below questions and shares 15 to 20 good quality photos showing us their hairstyles.
  1. What's your name and where are you from?
  2. What is your hair type? (click here for the hair types)
  3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
  4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
  5. What is your weekly regimen?
  6. What is your daily morning regimen?
  7. What is your daily night time regimen?
  8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?
  9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
  10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?
  11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?
  12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?
  13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?
  14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) - if you want us to feature one of your most viewed YouTube videos here we'd love to.
[Please give full links to these profiles. If you don't give a link we will not hyperlink your handle, e.g. if you just say I'm @NenoNatural on Twitter we will just put that without linking it unless you give the link.]

Note: by sending your pictures to Neno Natural you agree to have them shared on this blog and on our social networks.

where Is This Neno Natural Chic From? I Can't Place Her Accent!

10/12/2013

Review: Au Naturale by Dark & Lovely & Curl Care by Dr Miracles

9/12/2013

Picture
Rating: 1/5 (Dark & Lovely)

I finally had to say it! I think the big brands have jumped onto the growth in natural hair keepers not to serve us but to make money out of us.

I was disappointed with both of these lines. My hair is:
  • very tangle-prone,
  • knotty,
  • dry and
  • lacking in curl definition
and neither of these lines solved these problems.

The products were lacking in slip and my hair remained quite dry.

Going forward, if I don't have time to whip up my own recipe I am going for brands that were developed specifically to solve the issues of natural hair. The tangle-struggle is so real!

Oh, why am I rating them 1 out of 5 if they are so bad? Well, Au Naturale by Dark & Lovely gets a point for pretty packaging and Dr Miracle's Curl Care gets a point for not being quite as bad as Dark and Lovely.

A Daily Regimen For Natural Hair - How To Maintain Your Hair During The Week

4/12/2013

Picture
The average person doesn't have much time to spend on their hair during the week.

Here is a recommended routine that you can follow:

BEFORE BED
  • Massage Neno Natural's Hair Growth Stimulator into your hair's roots.
  • Using a little moisturizer part hair into 6 or 8 sections and twist it before bed.
  • Sleep on a satin pillow OR on a satin pillowcase. You don't need to use both but you can if you want to.

WHEN YOU WAKE UP
  1. Spritz some water on twisted or untwisted hair. If you'll be wearing your hair down don't spray too much water on it to prevent the hair from frizzing.
  2. Cover your hair in a shower cap as you get ready for the day if it's matted or very dry.
  3. Add a little creamy moisturizer to soften the hair, oil to seal, then style as desired.

Share any daily hair routines that you use to keep your hair soft AND especially to keep you rocking up to work on time.

How To Make Homemade Aloe Vera Juice For Natural Hair

2/12/2013

Picture
You don't need to buy Aloe Vera juice, you can make your own with this recipe.

An aloe vera plant has three layers:
  • Layer 1: The thick, green outer rind
  • Layer 2: The yellow sap or latex
  • Layer 3: The central core or gel

Picture
Ingredients:
  • Water
  • Aloe vera (one large leaf should be enough for a single use)

I think it's always best to use freshly made aloe vera juice so don't make more than you can use over a two week period. After you've used this recipe a few times you will see what quantities work.

Method:
  1. Wear latex gloves if you have them.
  2. Break off a few leaves from the aloe vera plant, Aloe Barbadensis. The leaves closer to the ground are more mature and richer in minerals so go for those.
  3. Wash the leaves to get rid of any dirt.
  4. Using a shape knife peel off as much of the green, thorny rind as is possible as well as the yellow layer that is just beneath the rind.
  5. Place what remains in a blender with some water.
  6. Blend well, then strain to remove any bits.

Storage
Keep in the fridge and use within two weeks.

Additional tips:
  • Which leaves should you choose? Use the leaves closest to the ground. Of those, if the tips of the leaves are dry, the leaf is ripe for picking.
  • What's the best way to cut the rind off? Cut the sides off, then the top and bottom. Alternatively, slice the leaf down the middle and fillet the gel out.
  • How long can you keep the leaves for? After you've picked the leaves use them within 24 to 48 hours, ideally immediately, as they will start deteriorating.
  • What can you use the rind and latex for? The rind can be used as compost. The yellow sap or latex can irritate skin and is toxic to pets so just dispose of it; it's used as an ingredient in laxatives and if you consume it internally you can get diarrhoea.
