1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Brittany and I currently live in Columbus, Georgia, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I have 4C hair as well!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had a horrible habit of getting relaxers every month when I came home to see my family. My scalp was so burnt that I could barely use warm water on it. I decided to just wear weaves and take a break from the relaxers. I started transitioning in July 2011. In February of 2012 after taking out a weave, the ends of my hair were severely broken. It was time to big chop. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I would have to say that the most challenging part was getting used to the technique and the way I looked without straight hair. I still struggle to find products that work but I think that is something that takes time. When I did my big chop I hated the way I looked with a TWA! So I taught myself to install Marley twists and box braids. YouTube saved my life! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash my hair with shampoo once a week. I live by Organix shampoos and conditioners. I usually let my conditioner sit on my hair for about 30 minutes and then rinse it and do flat twists. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If I wash my hair on Sunday, my twists usually last for at least three days. So in the morning I add some black castor oil and I’m on my way. If it’s been a lazy week I usually wear a wash-n-go and put my hair in puff using Eco-styler gel and edge control. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nightly regimen completely depends on my what hairstyle I have. If I have a twist out I try to re-twist at night and wear my silk scarf. If I have a wash-n-go I just wrap my hair up at night. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do use heat. I use heat before I install box braids or Marley twists. My hair literally takes over 14 hours to dry. If I know it will not be dry I use my blow dryer bonnet to speed up the process.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
My first year of being natural my hair was braided for about 6 months out of that year. This year I’ve had it in braids maybe three times but not for more than two weeks. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I live by all my wide-tooth combs. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I love trying new hairstyles and challenging myself to do new styles. I usually keep each style two weeks because my scalp may be irritated. There’s a 50/50 chance you will see me in a protective style on any given day. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve never really had a hair tragedy other than when I did my big chop. I was really upset at the time but it was time to make my leap into the natural hair community. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to be patient. Your hair grows at the rate it wants to and curls how it wants! So always actively teach yourself how to do new styles and embrace what you have. After all it is YOUR hair! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Neosha and I'm in Georgia, USA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a mix of Type 4 but mostly just 4B and 4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural 3 years ago on March 14th 2011. I initially wanted to transition for a year before ding the big chop but after 6 months I just randomly got out of bed one morning, grabbed some scissors and started snipping off my relaxed ends. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging was learning my hair. That was pretty rough. Trial and error helped out. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash (condition) weekly and deep condition bi-weekly. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? No routine. Just depends on if I plan to leave the house or not. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is not in a protective style such as braids, then I usually twist or pineapple my hair after spraying a leave in conditioning spray. Then apply a satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes. I MIGHT flat iron no more than twice a year. I use a hooded dryer when I do my deep conditioning treatments (not always bi-weekly).
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. My hair is currently in box braids for the winter. I usually do braid styles during the fall/winter months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth when I want my hair to let me be great . Other times, it's all finger detangling. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Currently in a protective do. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I was new to the natural thing, I made the mistake of putting in a texturizer not even a month later. Worst thing ever. So luckily my chop was still young and it just grew out. I recovered by reading up on hair, YouTube videos, LOTS of conditioning and protective styles, etc. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? The less you touch it, the better. At least for me. lol. Also, it doesn't hurt to learn techniques from others. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Candice, I'm from Georgia 2. What is your hair type? My hair is in the 3 category but it's sometimes hard to determine because it's different throughout, so I have to say some areas are 3b but for the most part, it's around 3c and coarser at the crown.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I began transitioning in 2012, and ultimately did a big chop in May of 2013 (due to heat damage). I decided to go natural initially because I wanted my curls back and I wanted my hair to be stronger and free from chemicals. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing, I would have to say has been dealing with single strand knots, I hate those things! 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen depends on the style I'm wearing, but I keep it simple. If I'm wearing a wash 'n go, I'll usually co-wash and condition weekly. If I'm wearing a protective style, it's different because sometimes I go a little longer without washing. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If I'm wearing a wash & go, I will spritz my hair with a water and oil mix (usually coconut oil), to refresh the style. If it's a braidout/twistout, I'll just unravel the style and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? This again, depends on the style. If I'm wearing a wash & go I'll spritz my hair with water and oil and "pineapple" it up and apply my satin scarf. If it's a braidout/twistout I will usually spritz with water and oil and re-braid/re-twist for the next morning. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Since my big chop in May of 2013 I have used heat twice..once in October 2013, and second in April 2014. I like to go at least 6 months without heat.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I do. Since my big chop in May 2013 I've done box braids during the "twa" stage and I also did yarn braids a month before my one year anniversary of my big chop. And I recently did box braids again this past summer, 2014. Yarn braids are my favorite though, because the yarn is light and moisture retention is easy with them. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I currently use a wide toothed comb, but I've heard many positive things about the Denman brush so I plan to try one soon. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It depends. I usually like to do protective styles when the seasons change, like cooler months. So most of the time my hair is loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes. The tragedy that ultimately led me to big chop in May 2013. I had been transitioning well and I ended up using a straightening tool I wasn't familiar with. There were no heat settings and my hair was burned. I fixed this by doing my big chop, that was the best thing I could have ever done for my hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Make water your main beverage. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Tabitha Banks aka Beautiful Soul, and I am from Miami, Florida, and I am currently loving life in the ATL (Georgia)!! 2. What is your hair type? I typically don’t hair type because I have so many different textures, but I’ve been told that I have a mixture of 3c, 4a, 4b, and 4c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
November 2011 is when I big chopped and I did it because my hair was thinning terribly and I had a large bald spot on the crown of my head. Once I noticed that the spot was beginning to spread to the back of my head, and with the encouragement of my dermatologist I went natural and it’s been one beautiful ride. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was learning how to properly moisturize my natural hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consists of shampooing, deep conditioning, and moisturizing my hair. Here’s a link to my video that shows in detail of my wash day http://youtu.be/Jyyu28hsrrg 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on how I styled my hair, which is probably in some sort of twist out style (braid, twist & Curl or flat twists), I just put a little oil on my hands, remove the twists or braids and fluff. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I’m wearing twists or braids, I will retwist or braid my hair every night. If, I am wearing a fro, I just spritz with a refresher spray and seal in that moisture with oil, and I always protect my hair by covering up with a satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Very rarely. I’ve been natural for 2½ years and have blow dried twice and flat ironed only once and I have no desire to every add heat to my hair again.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I don’t braid my hair. I put kinky twists in my hair once, just to see if it was something that I could on my own. I was able to do it and now the thrill is gone. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. I am not a fan of the Denman brush. It rips out more than necessary. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is loose 98% of the time. However, in the very near future, I will start to protective style with wigs a lot more. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I haven’t had any major tragedies, but I did have a hair scare…. When I died my hair to black using a Garnier product, it completely dried my hair out. After several failed attempts to get the moisture back into my hair, I was afraid that I was going to bc again, but after using some of my favorite products, I was able to bring my hair back to life. Here’s a video to my scare:
13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?
I focus on maintaining healthy hair instead of length. My biggest tip would be to learn how to properly moisturize your hair. Making sure you maintain the proper moisture in your hair will lead to hair growth. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc)

Turkesha McIvy I'm from Savannah, Georgia but I reside in Fayetteville, Georgia 2. What is your hair type? 4B & 4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I wanted to retain the healthy hair that I once had before I relaxed my hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? At first I thought that it was when my hair was shorter but its at that in between stage. The shoulder length and with my hair type SHRINKAGE is not my friend so its challenging for me. I think it would be easier if I cut it short again. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash my hair twice a week and coat with the Jamaican Mango & Lime Alma Castor Oil and then I sometimes wear a twist out ponytail but for the most part I mainly wear protective styles like Faux Buns and Tree Braids. I also deep condition once a month when I am not wearing my tree braids. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I moisturize my scalp with a lavender oil spritz that I make for the kids and I. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I spray my hair with my lavender oil spritz and cover my hair with a satin cap. I also sleep with a satin pillow case on my pillow. This protects my hair when I wear my afro puffs and two strand twist. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Rarely. I get a blow out every two years for a week.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. I wear tree braids for the majority of the year. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide tooth comb. I don't like Denman brushes on my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Both! The last year I wore more protective styles to retain length. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Ensuring that your ends are clipped, moisturizing your hair and deep conditioning. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Kiki living in Atlanta, GA but originally from Chicago, IL. 2. What is your hair type? I don't like to put my hair in this very limited category system. I have different textures ranging from loose curls to very tight curls.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I stopped relaxing in 2000 after my hair dresser suggested it. I have always suffered with scalp burns from relaxers so I was willing to give it a go. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Thinking that my hair texture would look like the girl on the box just by using the product in the box. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Now that I have shaved my head I don't have one and I am loving it!! I do moisturize my head/hair daily because my scalp gets dry just like the skin on any other area of the body. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I rub my head down with a hair moisturizer that is basically a combination of oils and shea butter. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Absolutely nothing!! Now that I have shaved my head I don't even wear a du rag! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not now since I don't have any hair to work with but when I had longer hair I would blow dry it from time to time to achieve a particular style.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I would put in box braids here and there during the summer when I was working out but did not add extensions. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both!! With different textures some tools work on certain parts of my hair and others don't. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? When it was longer I would start with a protective do and then let it out and wear it loose for a few days before starting the process all over again. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I had my hair highlighted and then highlights on top of that so I began to experience breakage. I just cut all of the color damage off and started again. That was about 5 years ago. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Regularly moisturizing your hair (even in between styling sessions). Wearing protective styles such as twists. And alternating between a strengthening and moisturizing deep conditioner. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc). 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi! I’m Courtney and I currently live just outside Atlanta, GA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is actually mixed ranging from loose waves in some parts to tightly curled in others. It is predominantly 3b/3c when defined.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I transitioned to natural hair for about eight months before having the big chop done in June 2009. I returned natural for several reasons, with the most pressing being my curiosity about my natural texture. Though I achieved long, relaxed hair with little maintenance or effort, I suffered from recurring dandruff and split ends more than I liked. I didn’t understand how to care for my hair, and this became increasingly clear when I went to college. I wanted to understand my hair and how to take care of it without the nuisance of having to relax, blow dry and straighten every month. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part of going natural was not having a strong support system. I had encouragement from friends, but not much from family, and no stylist. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly routine begins with a sulfate-free wash followed by a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment, then an apple cider vinegar rinse. I allow my hair to air dry in four twists after it’s been saturated with a leave-in conditioner. Once it’s 80-100% dry, I will unravel the twists, apply a cream or heavy moisturizer and style. If I’m lazy or planning for a busy week, I’ll set my hair in “many” twists (not too tiny or too big), and wear it that way for the week. My go-to style is a chunky twist out. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Each morning I lightly mist my hair with water or aloe vera juice, fluff and pin whatever pieces can’t be easily tamed. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I simply cover my hair with a satin bonnet. I will retwist or reset my hair about once a week. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I use heat sparingly. Occasionally I will tension blow dry my hair for a bigger, fluffier twist out. I’m currently on a flat ironing “strike” as part of a healthy hair challenge, so I’m abstaining from having my hair ceramic pressed for six months. I usually have my hair pressed by a licensed stylist twice a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I don’t braid my hair myself, but I try to have it braided by a professional (an experienced braider) at least once a year. Box braids, individual braids and Senegalese twists are my favorite styles. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb, please. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It’s normally loose. In the past, I tried to alternate between loose and protective styles. I’m thinking of using that 50/50 philosophy again. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve had two tragedies, one while relaxed and the other about a year ago. I experienced what I believe are midshaft splits from improper use of the Tangle Teezer. As a result, I’ve incorporated the occasional protein treatment or ayurvedic practice (amla mask/rinse) as well as weekly deep conditioning to strengthen and repair my hair rather than cutting it. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Be patient. Care for and style your hair with patience. How you treat your hair is just as important as what you use on it. If you love it, it will grow and be healthy. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My Name is Peace Pressley and I am from Atlanta, GA 2. What is your hair type? I personally don't hair type, but to others I would be a 4B/4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started growing my hair out in Aug 2005, and I did my BC in Mar 2006. I decided to go natural when I saw how wonderful my mother looked after growing hers out. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part about going natural for me was the transition. I only transitioned for 7 months because I couldn't deal with the shedding and breakage from have two different textures in my hair. I was BEYOND ecstatic after my BC! 5. What is your weekly regimen? My wash day is either Friday or Sunday. I prepoo with coconut out or an oil mix (Olive, coconut, avocado, jojoba, castor, carrot, sweet almond, vitamin E and peppermint oils). After 30 minutes, I wash it out using anyone of my favorite shampoos. Currently I'm using Clear Ultimate Shea Butter Shampoo and Nothing But Clarifying. (My shampoo choices vary depending on what I need). I detangle using Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner and the DC with Nothing But Intense Healing Mask, Eden Body Works Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner, and my Huetiful Steamer. After steaming for 20 minutes, I apply a cream leave-in conditioner either homemade (2 Tbsp aloe vera, 2 tsp caster oil, 2 tbs jojoba, and 2 Tbsp of my favorite regular leave-in )or store bought (Ouidad Moisture Lock and Karen Body Beautiful Ambrosia Leave-in together) 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I usually take down my chunky twists, fluff, style and leave. Styling for me is not much before work. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is already moisturized, I add a little of either Crown-n-Glory Royal butter or Qhemet Biologics Alma and Olive Heavy Cream. If I need moisture, I'll use my handheld Q-Redew to steam each section then add one of the butter/creams above. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I very rarely use heat on my hair. It gets pressed about 3 times a year. I own a curling wand which I have only used once so far, but LOVE it. The last time I used a blow dryer was to stretch my twists, not to actually blow my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid and add extensions to my hair. I often do it myself and I prefer Havanna/Marley Twists. Last year, I did them about 4 times. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide tooth shower comp and a Tangle Teezer. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It's a mix of both for me. In one week I usually wear both loose and protective hair styles. When I'm lazy I use more protective styling. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Wow! Who hasn't??!! I'll never forget mine: After being natural for a couple of months I decided to go and get my hair pressed for the first time. The style was super cute, but when I went to wash it, 2 sections of my hair did not curl back. It turned out that the stylist pressed my hair too hard with the hot comb. It was my first saddening instance of heat damage. I had to grow it out and trim it off little my little. After that I did not press my hair for 3 years and no one was ever touching my hair with with a hot comb again!! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Trim your ends! There is no amount moisturizing and protective styling that can fix split ends. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My Name is Saleemah Cartwright. I am from Buffalo, NY and I currently reside in Atlanta, GA. Co-owner of Hydratherma Naturals 2. What is your hair type? I have a mixture of textures. My sides and nape is 4a. My crown is 3c. I also have a quarter sized amount of frizz in my crown. Not sure how to categorize the frizz section because it has no real curl just frizz. :)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural numerous times in my life. I’ve actually done 5 big chops. I transitioned for 5 months and did the big chop in 2008. I have been natural ever since. I’m definitely here to stay. I recently big chopped my natural hair last month and donated my natural hair to locks of love. I'm wearing a TWA now and I’m lovin’ it! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I believe that the most challenging thing was learning how to handle my natural hair. Dealing with single strand knots can be a pain but oil rinses really helped with this problem a lot. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consist of keeping my hair balanced with moisture and protein with the Hydratherma Naturals products. I alternate my moisture and protein deep conditioning treatments. Every other week I use the Hydratherma Naturals Moisture Boosting Deep Conditioning Treatment or the Hydratherma Naturals Amino Plus Deep Conditioning Treatment. After applying the deep conditioning treatment, I apply a small amount of the Hydratherma Naturals Hair Growth Oil to my hair ends before covering with a plastic cap. I then deep condition with heat for about 15 minutes, comb though and rinse. The end result is super soft hair! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I keep my hair balanced with moisture and protein daily with the use of the Hydratherma Naturals Protein Balance Leave In Conditioner (adds protein), Daily Moisturizing Growth Lotion (adds moisture) and the Hair Growth Oilto seal in the moisture. These 3 products keep my hair balanced with moisture and protein daily and leaves my hair super soft and well moisturized. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I cover my TWA with a silk bonnet. When my hair was longer, I would apply the Hydratherma Naturals daily use products and braid or twist my hair. If I want extra hold I will apply the Botanical Defining Gel (firm hold) or the Foaming Sea Silk Curly Styler (light hold) before braiding my hair. In the morning, I would unbraid (or untwist) and finger-comb. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Currently, I do not use heat since I am wearing my TWA. When my hair was long, I used heat about every 2 months. I was always sure to protect my hair with the Hydratherma Naturals Herbals Gloss Heat Protector to prevent heat damage.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do not braid my hair but 1-2 times a year I like to wear temporary protective locs. I love the look of locs. This is a temporary loc style that gives the look of locs without the commitment. I usually wear them for about 5-8 weeks. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide tooth comb. I notice less breakage when I do not use a denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I wear my hair loose unless I’m doing some sort of protective style challenge. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I haven’t had a hair tragedy in many many years. Back in 2002 I relaxed my hair and added a high lift hair color a few months later. My hair started breaking at the root and needless to say I had to cut the damaged hair leading to my 2003 big chop. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I believe that the biggest factor for obtaining and maintaining healthy or long hair is balancing the moisture and protein levels in the hair. The Hydratherma Naturals line focuses on this balance. While working as a licensed cosmetologist I noticed that when the hair was well-balanced, the hair would flourish. Too much moisture or protein would result in breakage. Many of my clients, however, did not know how to achieve this balance so I wanted to develop a line that would take the guess work out of keeping the hair balanced. I tried many products on my hair and the hair of my clients. Most products would result in too much moisture or protein overload in the hair. So after several years of combining many of the hair care ingredients that I absolutely loved, I was able to design a natural-based hair care collection that provides the perfect balance of moisture and protein levels. I wanted to create an effective solution and a simple hair care regimen that my clients could easily follow. 14. Where can we find you online? 3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I began going natural 3 years ago, I transitioned for 18 months and did the big chop on November 1, 2012. I had been contemplating it for a while, but one day I sat in the mirror after my beautician had permed my hair and I noticed that it was thinning out and it wasn’t what it used to be. So, at that moment I decided that it was enough. I also, got my daughter to do it as well and she did the big chop and has been rocking it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The in-between stage, when I didn’t know what to do with it, it was kind of depressing. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition weekly, I either do greek yogurt, Shea Moisture deep masque or banana and olive oil 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I spritz it with distilled water and various oils. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually have a twist out, I just spray with water and oil. Water seems to keep my hair moisturized 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I used it one time last year when I cut all the perm off and it damaged my hair so I didn’t do it again.
