3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I noticed relaxers destroyed my hair and I felt God made me with kinks so I have no right to change it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? People trying to discourage you (more than once people have called my hair bushy). 5. What is your weekly regimen? I prepoo with a natural oil mix, then I wash my hair with black soap shampoo, deep condition with honey, oil, mayo and sometimes eggs and other things in my kitchen, then I condition my hair with Vo5 moisture milk, then apply ors leave in conditioner and seal it in with a hair butter I make. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Spray my hair with water, apply my leave in conditioner and seal in with coconut, olive or jbc oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Spray with water, apply my hair butter and put my hair in braids. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I haven't used heat on my hair since I went natural.

I regularly have both loose hair and protective-dos. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I had one when I lost my hair bonnet, my hair wasn't very protected at night. I now ensure to keep a spare bonnet to-hand. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Reduce the amount of chemicals and heat you put in your hair. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Marianne and I am German/Nigerian. 2. What is your hair type? I am not the biggest fan of “hair typing” for several reasons but also because I do not have one particular curl type throughout. I would say that I have a mix of 3c/4a depending on where you look. The back of my hair is more 3c, the crown 4a while the hair at the front and by my temple is mix between the two.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started transitioning at the end of 2009 and would just trim my hair every few months until mid-2010 when I had all my natural hair back. I didn’t know that what I was doing is “going natural” or “transitioning”. I just got sick of relaxing my hair and wanted to stop. I had severely damaged hair due to chemicals from the relaxers as well as the fact that I was constantly dying my hair. My sister stopped relaxing her hair before I did and when I saw how beautiful her 'fro looked I said enough. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? My lack of knowledge! I didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t have a plan. I just thought ok I will stop relaxing my hair and I will get my curls back and that’s that. Because I didn’t know what I was doing, I wasn’t blending the two textures together, so I literally walked around with curly roots and stringy nasty looking ends! My hair was breaking because I wasn’t doing anything to help strengthen it. The transition was rough but it was my own fault as well (knowledge is power people :)) 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once a week using ACV, every other week I use Shikakai to do a proper cleanse and do a moisturizing deep condition (DC) once a week after cleansing my hair. I also do a protein DC every 5 weeks for strength and apply henna once a month. Whenever I use shikakai I do a hot oil treatment to avoid my hair from feeling stripped. After washing, I moisturize with my DIY cream leave-in conditioner and then seal with my DIY oil and/or my whipped butter. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on what style I am wearing I will either just take my hair down, shake my head and use my fingers to arrange my hair and go or I will use a little of my DIY spray leave-in to lightly mist my hair, arrange and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I tend to remoisturize my hair at night with either my creamy leave-in or spray leave-in depending on how thirsty/dry my hair feels. I will use a little oil to seal or butter and then pineapple or put in chunky twists (no more than 9), cover with a scarf and get some z’s. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Nope, I am scared of heat damage lol. I have never been good with using heat so I stopped even before I went back natural (it has been about 8 years since I last used a hair dryer!)
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Nope, I had a bit of a mishap the last time so I have not used extensions in over 4 years. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It is usually loose about 70% of the time but I am trying to get myself to do more protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had a few! I got major breakage when I lasted used extensions because I didn’t properly detangle my hair nor did I prep my hair before putting in the braids. I have not always been gentle on my very, very sensitive and fragile hairline (fragile hairlines run in the family) so I am currently trying to baby it with my castor oil & rose infused almond oil blend by gently massaging my scalp every day. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Be patient, be informed, be gentle and be patient again! Natural hair needs tender loving care. It will not happen overnight, there is no magic “get long healthy hair tomorrow” pill. If you learn what you hair likes/dislikes, listen to your hair needs and understand that your hair is yours and you should love it as that, you are already on the road to success! 14. 3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural 3 years ago after leaving a corporate sales job to pursue my writing career. I felt so free! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Maintain the length that I was growing, but since I've been wearing a lot of protective styles that have been helpful. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I use shea butter to style and plait my hair in small braids. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I take the braids out in the morning and style. I may or may not add more moisture to my ends. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually re-braid my hair into larger braids and wrap them in a scarf before bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes occasionally when I need to trim my hair or wish to wear it straight. I go to a salon to do and they use heat protectant.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I do. I wear my hair in braid during the summer months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Because of my hair texture definitely a wide-tooth comb made from tortoise-shell. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It depends on the season. Loose in the spring and autumn and protective do either braids or a extensions in the summer and winter. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes I was in a rush to take out my braids and accidentally cut my hair. A large tuft square in the middle. Big-chop Part 2. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? To always condition and moisture your ends. This helps not lessen the frequency of trims. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi, I'm Alfreda and I'm from Nigeria but reside in Texas. 2. What is your hair type? I have various textures, 3B-4B and some fuzz lol
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I got my last relaxer 07/2010, because my guard and band camp schedule was to hectic and sweaty to let me get one. Fast forward to 01/11, I washed my hair after taking down braids I'd had for two months, then felt and saw something that BLEW my mind! I had about four inches of curly roots and I loved it! I didn't know what natural hair was or that I could maintain hair without a relaxer, so I was quite impressed. I left it with the straight ends till 10/2011, then I shaved my hair off to start college. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? For me it was not having a clue what to do with my hair and how to care for it. I remember for the first eight months after my BC, I used only shampoo and olive oil. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash my hair in 5 sections 2-5 times a week using Silkience or the vo5 kiwi-lime clarifying conditioner, finger detangle and rinse, then apply a rinse out conditioner (currently using Pantene Curl Perfection Moisturizing Conditioner), rinse apply some silkience and seal with my shea butter or oil mix, then style. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If my hair is in a loose style, I just apply some shea butter or Crisco shortening on it, then shape it. if it's textured, I spritz it with water, then apply some shea butter or conditioner and coconut oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I really don't have one, but if my hair is a bit dry at night, I add a little bit of moisture to it(water or conditioner). I always sleep on satin pillows, so I don't have to remember to put on a bonnet or scarf, or worry about my pillowcase sliding off. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I recently just flat ironed my hair for the first time in a year. so I would say rarely.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, I'd say about twice a year for a period of 20 - 30 days. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both, it just depends on what I'm doing. I use a wide tooth come on my stretched hair, and a denman on my textured hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It's normally loose. I absolutely love the textured look, but I do wear my hair in twists occasionally. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I recently had some brazilian hair installed, but I didn't know it wasn't washed after being processed. so my scalp reacted to it, leaving me with chemical burns. At first I thought it was dandruff, so I used some medicated shampoo not knowing I wasn't supposed to rinse and repeat. Soon after clumps of curls started falling out from the roots. To resolve this, I co-washed everyday that week, and applied some Softee mango butter and coconut oil to the affected areas. Problem solved 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? You have to be patient with it, show it some TLC and try not to overdo it. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I’m Lola and I’m from Lagos, Nigeria. I currently live in the United Kingdom (London). 2. What is your hair type? My hair types are 4a/4b. I’m 4a (coily) around my edges and nape area, with 4b (kinky) at the crown and majority of my hair. I get A LOT of shrinkage (from waist up above my collar bone).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started transitioning to natural in January 2010 with my last relaxer in November 2009. I decided to go natural after finding CurlyNikki.com and discovering lots of amazing naturals on YouTube. I was texlaxing my hair for the year beforehand and I liked my thicker hair! Natural was the next step for me at that point. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I decided I would transition for at least 2 years because I was too attached to my Mid-back length hair. I had waited too long for that length to cut it all off! My family weren’t too thrilled with the decision but they did come around eventually – it only took 2 years, lol! Caring for the demarcation line between my relaxed hair and natural growth was hardest when detangling, aka wash days. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash my hair once a week with Tresemme Naturals Vibrantly Smooth Conditioner or one of my homemade mixes and finish with an apple cider vinegar rinse. I leave some conditioner in my hair before the final rinse to keep it soft! I oil and finger-detangle my damp hair and install a protective style like two-strand twists or flat twists. I deep condition or do a Rhassoul Clay mud wash treatment every 2-4 weeks. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning, I remove my satin scarf and bonnet and moisturize with a water and Aloe vera juice spray and seal with a light oil! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I moisturize with my moisture spray mix and lightly oil before covering with a satin scarf and bonnet. Simple! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don’t use any heat on my hair. I air-dry my Curlformer sets overnight (takes around 5 hours to dry). Bantu knot-outs take forever and a day to dry (I may start using a hooded dryer).
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I use two-strand twists as a protective style for most of the year. I rarely braid my hair. If I have loose twists, I keep them for 1 month maximum. With flat-twists and two-strand twists, I re-do them every 2 weeks and remove after 1 month total. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither, lol! I have found the Denman pulls too much on my hair and I’m too much a fan of finger-detangling to go back to the wide-tooth comb. I recently bought a new hair brush from Bellebene at a hair event in Paris. It has no back so the combs are more flexible. They also appear to be seamless. I will reserve it for once a month thorough detangling before a curly set. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is usually in a protective style. However, I am experimenting more with curly sets to free it! Lol! I want to enjoy my length and thickness whilst being able to throw it in a bun when needed. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I can’t think of a hair tragedy. I guess before my hair journey it seemed like every salon visit was a tragedy (the dreaded trim that’s really a cut) but I can’t think of any during my journey so far. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to learn to style your hair yourself. Get one go-to style you can do with your eyes closed. That way, you will never feel like a victim of bad hair days! This allows me to keep going with my regimen and still look cute! If you don’t feel confident about your hair, you will give up just before you’ve achieved the results you want. Be patient whilst perfecting this style though - my flat twists took almost 2 years look great. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello Queens! My name is Ekene, and I’m from Nigeria! 2. What is your hair type? Super kinky 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped in May 2012. I knew being natural would be healthier for my hair, and I also felt it would be more “me”. Thanks to the lovely women on Curly Nikki and Black Girl Long Hair & many more hair bloggers, I had become aware that it was an option for me to wear my hair in its natural state. AND I’ve always preferred wearing my own hair to extensions. Natural hair presented waaaay more versatility and options than relaxed hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was truly my own mind. I was so afraid, I thought it wouldn’t work out for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I moisturise 2-3 times a week, and when my hair is out, I co-wash 2 times, and I deep condition at least once a week! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Mmm I don’t have much of a daily regimen. I’ve found that I prefer to moisturise my hair at night. By morning, it’s just easier for me to work with soft well moisturised hair that isn’t wet or damp. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? When I have a style in, I just wear my satin bonnet to sleep- and before that I spritz to moisturise if necessary. But when my hair is loose, I chunky twist before bed so my fro is somewhat stretched in the morning. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Hm. I like to steam my hair, that’s indirect heat. But since I went natural, save for a few blow-outs before braiding, I haven’t used any heat on my hair. Maybe when it’s long enough, I’ll try.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I love to braid my hair. About 4 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? If I must choose, wide tooth comb. But if I don’t have to, I’d choose my fingers. :) 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Last year I wore my hair mostly loose in a fro, which in retrospect wasn’t the wisest thing to do because I combed it like every single day, sometimes twice a day or even 3 times! Since the beginning of this year though, I’ve been protective styling - alternating styles with or without extensions. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Hmmm. After my big chop, I felt pretty brave. I had 8 months of growth from transitioning and I wanted to try going even lower. So I went to the barber with wet hair. I wasn’t considering shrinkage and I doubt he knew anything about that. So there was no blow-out. He took his clipper to my wet, shrunken, patted down hair and the end result wasn’t pretty. My hair was patchy in different places. One side was obviously longer than the rest, and in some places, I could see my scalp! :O It was so bad that I went to a salon to get a weave and they didn’t believe a barber could have done that! They asked if I was playing with scissors. So embarrassing, lol that bad! So to fix it, I wore protective styles back to back for 4 months, and then I did a re-chop, bringing everything down to the shortest length. Sigh, talk about my 8 months of transitioning struggle all wasted!! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My hair isn’t long (yet!) but it’s pretty healthy. My biggest tip would be deep condition, deep condition, deep condition! But note that you have to DC according to your hair’s needs. Don’t overdo it, don’t use protein when you don’t have to. 14.
