2. What is your hair type?
3C (front)/ 4A (middle & back)
Been natural all my life, but I began my 1st attempt at a healthy hair journey my freshman year of college (2013). My college roommate was natural and very big on maintaining her hair/ keeping it healthy so, one day I just realized I’d never truly seen my hair in its natural state. Whenever I’d wash it or get it done, it’d be put into braids or flat ironed. I was interested in seeing what it would be like to truly take care of my hair the right way as well as discover my curl pattern.
4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing about going natural is finding the right products for YOUR hair and trying to overcome natural hair setbacks/ obstacles because you’re bond to run into a few during your journey, especially if it’s all new to you. Going natural is definitely a “self-taught” skill so, through trial and error, you’ll learn what’s best for you.
5. What is your weekly regimen?
Tuesday = Hot Oil Treatment with JBCO/ Pre-poo with coconut oil
Wednesday = Deep Condition, Co-Wash, and Style
Thursday = 1st Day Hair
Friday = 2nd Day Hair
Saturday = 3rd Day Hair/ Refresh Style
Sunday = 4th Day Hair
Monday = 5th Day Hair (style is old so I’ll do a high puff most likely)
Tuesday = REPEAT
6. What is your daily morning regimen?
Remove silk bonnet, spritz hair with a little water, fluff with hands into my desired shape, and pick roots for volume.
7. What is your daily night time regimen?
Split hair into 5 parts and wrap an ouch less ponytail holder around each section then put on bonnet.
8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?
Yes, about 3-4x a year
Yes, I do Marley Twists on myself about twice a year. I also do cornrows on myself as a protective style frequently too (about 5-8xs a year).
10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?
Both, but if I had to choose it’d be Denman brush!
11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?
Normally loose, but I’m working on growing my hair out more so, I’ll probably be doing a lot more protective styles this year.
12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?
Before I went natural, I was unaware of how much heat damage I had. I used to flatiron my hair every other day basically; so after trying to figure out different ways to disguise it, I just decided to mini big chop myself that Summer (2014) after school let out. As of recently, my latest hair tragedy has been color damage in the front right side of my head, but my protein treatments and consistent hair regimen is helping that.
13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?
Develop a hair regimen and stick to it! Deep Condition weekly, always make sure your hair is moisturized when it’s starting to look brittle and dry, and TRIM WHEN NECCESSARY. I suggest learning to trim yourself because sometimes hair stylists take off more than we desire so, take things into your own hands; you know your hair more than anyone. Also, for me personally, my weekly JBCO treatments have grown my hair immensely so maybe trying that might help with growth.
