Egg White & Coconut Protein Conditioner - DIY Homemade Hair Recipe

17/5/2013

Picture
This conditioner is great when your hair is feeling weak.

Ingredients
  • 1 egg white
  • 60 ml coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • Peppermint essential oil (30 drops)
  • Cedarwood essential oil (10 drops)

For very thick, long hair double the formula so that you have more product. For every 30 ml of product add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and 5 drops of cedarwood essential oil.

Picture
The above should result in about 120 ml of product so use 40 drops of peppermint essential oil and 20 drops of cedarwood essential oil.

Method
  1. Using an electronic whisk beat the egg white until you have soft peaks (that is, it's white and foamy like in the above picture).
  2. Pour in the coconut milk and whisk some more.
  3. Add the vitamin e oil and the essential oils.
  4. Mix to distribute the essential oils evenly

Application

Condition as always. Let the mixture sit under a shower cap for 30 to 45 minutes for full absorption of nutrients. Rinse with cool water otherwise the egg may start to cook and you'll end up with white bits in your hair. Follow with a co-wash using your regular conditioner to ensure all the product has been rinsed out.

Storage

Use all of this immediately. Don't store otherwise the egg whites begin to go liquid.

The Advanced Shine Boosting Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse

15/5/2013

Picture
This recipe is better than the bog standard ACV rinse because it not only loosens curls but it boosts your hair's shininess and it also helps you retain moisture! This is the recipe:

Ingredients
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2.75 cups cold water
  • 1/4 cup boiling hot water
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Picture
Method
  1. Pour 1 cup of apple cider vinegar into a jug
  2. Add 2.75 cups of cold water
  3. Pour boiling water into a cup until quarter full
  4. Stir the honey into the cup
  5. Pour the now dilute honey into the jug
  6. Then pour into a bottle you can take into the shower

Application

Run this mixture through your hair after you've washed and conditioned it. Make sure it's very cool because cold water seals the cuticle layer of hair and boosts hair's shine. You can finish the whole process off by lightly rinsing your hair with clean cold water Don't over-rinse your hair so you don't remove all the good stuff that you just added.

Dry with a microfiber towel and style.

Key Benefits of Honey for Natural Hair

14/5/2013

Picture
Honey is used in some of my homemade hair recipes...this is why...

Honey has two key benefits for hair
  • It is a humectant, this means it attracts and retains moisture (water) leaving your hair feeling moisturised.
  • It boosts hair's shininess.
In addition,
  • Honey is packed with vitamins and minerals that are important for hair growth, e.g. iron, zinc, vitamins B1, B2 and B3

Picture
Disadvantages of honey for hair

It can lighten the colour of your hair. I don't think there is scientific evidence for this but a fan told me that after prolonged use of honey, her hair became lighter in colour. I personally don't want to risk it so I only use conservative amounts of honey.

Adding honey to conditioner will help to make your hair feel softer, healthier and easier to manage.

Vitamin E (Oil) Grows Awesome Natural Hair

13/5/2013

Picture
Vitamin E helps to grow hair! The exact mechanism of how it does this is not known but it nonetheless has been shown to:
  • Improve hair growth
  • Prevent hair loss
  • Prevent split ends
  • Help to heal heat-damaged hair

Picture
How might vitamin E improve hair growth?
Vitamin E is heavily involved in the growth and development of capillaries (arteries). An extensive network of capillaries delivers nutrients to the scalp and it is this that promotes hair growth.

How can you use vitamin E:

  1. If you take a multivitamin check that vitamin E is one of the key vitamins.
  2. Consume more vitamin E through your diet - this is better than taking a multivitamin.
  3. Add a little vitamin E oil to your hair products; vitamin E oil is a common ingredient in my DIY homemade hair recipes.

Which foods are rich in vitamin E?

  • Dark Leafy Greens
  • Liver
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Seafood
  • Legumes, e.g. beans
  • Carrots
  • Cabbage
You'll notice that these are also the same foods that are rich in iron!

Is vitamin E good for more than just hair?
Certainly. It's actually best known to be great for the heart and is also good for skin.

What is the recommended daily allowance of vitamin E?
400 IU (International Units)

Can vitamin E be hazardous to health?
Yes, too much of anything is bad. Over 1,000 IU/day can be toxic and over 10,000 IU has been shown to cause hair loss!

Fortifying Mayo Conditioning Treatment - Homemade Natural Hair Recipe

11/5/2013

Picture
This conditioning treatment will strengthen, soften and help you detangle your hair. All you need is:

Ingredients
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons mayonnaise (depending on length of hair)
  • For every 30 ml of product add 9 drops of peppermint essential oil and 3 drops of rosemary essential oil.

6 scoops of mayonnaise results in about 240 ml of product so use 63 drops of peppermint essential oil and 24 drops of rosemary essential oil.

Method
  1. Crack two eggs into a bowl.
  2. Add the mayonnaise then beat the two together until is well mixed.
  3. Pour the mixture into a bottle then add the essential oils.
  4. Stir to distribute the essential oils evenly

Picture
Application

Condition as always. Let the mixture sit under a shower cap for 30 to 45 minutes for full absorption of nutrients. Rinse with warm/cool water otherwise the egg may start to cook and you'll end up with white bits in your hair.

Follow with a co-wash using your regular conditioner to ensure all the product has been rinsed out.

Storage

Store in the fridge for up to a week.

This should last two conditioning sessions for medium to long hair. For short hair half the formula as you don’t need as much product and you don’t want to keep the blend for too long.

Benefits of Eggs and Mayonnaise (Mayo) for Natural Hair

10/5/2013

Picture
What is Mayonnaise?
Mayonnaise is an emulsion derived by drizzling oil into egg yolks or whole eggs with seasoning and whisking until the blend thickens.

Mayo sometimes includes vinegar or lemon as a key ingredient because it increases the amount of oil the egg yolks can hold.

The pH of mayo varies depending on the ratio of eggs to vinegar. Commercial mayo is acidic with a pH ranging from 4.2 to 4.5. Healthy hair has a pH ranging from 4.0 to 5.5 so mayo lies within this range. Note, however, that the pH of mayo can at times fall below 4.

Picture
What is in egg yolks?
  • Primarily proteins and fats/cholesterol.
  • It is also very rich in vitamins: A, D, E, B1, B2 & B5
  • Plus a wide array of minerals (including iron and zinc)

What's in egg whites?
  • Mostly proteins.

pH
The pH of egg yolks is c. 6.2 (weakly acidic)
The pH of egg whites is c. 9.3 (alkaline)
The pH of blended egg is c. 7.9 (weakly alkaline)

Picture
Benefits of Eggs and Mayonnaise on Hair
  1. Improves hair's moisture
  2. Boosts hair's shine
  3. Fortifies hair by providing nutrients not present in commercial shampoos. Lecithin and proteins in egg yolk are particularly useful for this function.
  4. Softens hair
  5. Makes hair more silky and manageable
  6. Sulfur in egg yolks helps to relieve dandruff

Breakage Minimising Hot Oil Treatment - Great After Braids

10/5/2013

Picture
When I take braids out my hair is normally very dry and I incur some breakage purely as a result of that dryness so this time I decided to fortify my hair with a hot oil treatment.

For the treatment I mixed:
  • 15 ml golden jojoba
  • 7.5 ml argan oil
  • 7.5 ml coconut oil
15 ml = about 0.5 ounces; 7.5 ml = about 0.25 ounces

You can use any three oils but these oils are especially good as pre-shampoo treatment because they can penetrate into the hair fibre. Some oils like sweet almond oil and castor oil can't penetrate hair fibres for the most part and as such are better for sealing hair. You can buy all these carrier oils (and three more) in one nifty pack.

Into the blend I put 3 to 4 drops of the following essential oils:
  • Cedarwood
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Peppermint

Picture
I shook the blend to mix then microwave for 10 seconds at a time until it was warm.

I covered my hair in a shower cap then went for jog before releasing my hair from braids. This helped to generate heat. You don't have to go jogging, just cover your hair in a showercap then blow dry over the surface and tie a scarf over that to trap the heat in. Leave for 30 minutes.

I had very minimal breakage when I took my hair out compared to what I usually get so I was pleased.

8 Benefits of Coconut Milk for Natural Hair

8/5/2013

Picture
I had no idea that coconut milk had so many health benefits until I started working on this blog. I'll focus on hair...

You can use coconut milk as a conditioner or to make a moisturising shampoo.

What is in coconut?

It's packed with vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5, and B6 as well as iron, calcium selenium, sodium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. It's also a good source of proteins and natural oils.

How does coconut milk help hair? It:
  1. Helps to protect hair from the loss of protein.
  2. Boosts hair's body/volume and shine by replenishing hair fibres with oil.
  3. Helps to repair damaged hair
  4. Helps to detangle hair.
  5. Helps to soften hair.
  6. Treats a dry flaky scalp.
  7. Helps to treat hair loss - not scientifically proven but some claim tis so!
  8. By protecting hair and the scalp, it helps hair grow.

Picture
If you are making a shampoo coconut oil gives it a moisturising quality so that the shampoo doesn't strip your hair.

If you are making a conditioner then it fortifies hair fibres with proteins, iron and oils. Using heat by wearing a shower cap to trap body heat or blow drying over the surface of your shower cap helps with the absorption of nutrients.

Homemade Hair Recipe: Coconut Milk Shampoo

7/5/2013

Picture
This easy 5-minute shampoo formula will leave your hair feeling soft and moisturised. Both my husband and I loved it.

Ingredients
  • 120 ml or 1/2 cup coconut milk (either fresh or canned will do, I use canned)
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • Optional: 120 ml or 1/2 cup Liquid castile soap. If you use the castile soap double the number of drops of essential oils.
  • 10-11 drops of each of lavender, thyme, rosemary and cedarwood essential oils; 40-50 drops of peppermint essential oil.
If you don't use the castille soap half the drops of essential oil.

Example: if you do use the castille soap in your formula you can add: 20 drops lavender, 20 drops thyme, 20 drops rosemary, 20 drops cedarwood, 40 drops peppermint. I like to use more peppermint because it soothes my scalp.

Picture
Method

Place the ingredients in a plastic bottle and shake until the ingredients blend thoroughly.

Application

Shampoo as normal.

Storage

Can be kept for up to one week in the fridge.
