Soraya Bonostro, from Brooklyn New York. 2. What is your hair type? 4a/4b
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I fully went natural about two years ago. My main reason for doing it was to just come back to my true identity. I was teaching myself to be comfortable with whom I was. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Relearning what I thought I had forgotten how to love my hair patiently and allow it to grow at its own pace. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Apple cider vinegar (clean away build up) Co- wash Deep conditioner 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Mist hair with water Seal it with coconut oil Eco styler gel depending on the hairstyle of the day 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Mist hair with water Leave in conditioner (Cantu Shea leave in Repair) 6 Big twist or 6 big braids 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I do use heat but not too frequently.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, I do braid my hair when I am doing protective styles. Therefore, you can say as often everyday because with or without the protective style I like to keep my hair hydrated and moisturized. I find that when it is in braids it locks all the goodness in. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb always! That is my lifesaver. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I can actually say I do both; I try not to leave my protective styles in for too long. So, I find the balance no doing one or the other for too long. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Hair tragedy, no, but I have caused a lot of damage to my hair by experimenting with bleach/color. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Ladies and Gentlemen, please hydrate your beautiful hair. Do not me afraid to get that spray bottle, add a little conditioner in there, and spray away. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello queens! My name is Beau and I'm from Brooklyn, NY but I'm currently residing in Pennsylvania. 2. What is your hair type? Honestly, I think the whole "hair type" thing is overrated and I don't really follow that. My hair is thick and curly, but really easy to manage. As far as 3a, 4c, and Double d's... I ain't got time for all that. lol
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have been fully natural for a little over two years now after transitioning for 12 months prior to that. I big chopped on July 6, 2013 and got rid of almost 5 inches of dead, permed hair. Ultimately, my sisters were the ones who inspired me to go the natural route. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part about going natural was finding the right products for my hair. Lord have mercy! I spent months going through the 'product junky' phase. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I rarely shampoo my hair and if I do, I use As I Am's Curl Clarity Shampoo. I swear by all their products. I don't have a specific wash day. If my hair feels dirty or starts to itch at all, I'm washing it no matter what. I'd say, every three to four days and every other day in the Summer. On a regular wash day: I pre-poo by massaging some argon oil into my scalp, rinse with warm water, then co-wash with As I Am's Coconut Co-wash. I always rinse the final products out with cold water. After I'm out the shower, I apply some Kinky Curly Knot Today, a small dab of Shea Moisture's Curling Gel Soufflé, then I seal everything with some more Argan oil. Last step, I let my hair completely air dry. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning, I literally fluff and go! I'll apply a little more oil if necessary. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I always sleep on a satin pillow case. You can find some really good ones at Sally's beauty supply. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have been heat-free for a year now and I don't plan on changing that.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I rarely ever braid my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither, my fingers work best. If I absolutely have to, I'd use a wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? 95% of the time, I'm rocking a wash & go. That's just my thing. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Do I have to really go back there? Lord be a fence, lol. The worst hair experience I've ever had was going to a new Dominican salon in the area and asking for red highlights. My biggest mistake was making sure the woman understood exactly what I wanted done. I left with my entire head bleached bright red. I was absolutely, devastated. I will never forget that day and the look on my dad's face when I got home. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Drink water, eat clean, and keep your hair moisturized. There's no magic trick. Be good to your mane and it will be good to you. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

My name is April (Curlychaotic), and I'm from New York. 2. What is your hair type? I'm not much into the hair typing, but I believe I'm a 3B and 3C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Thanksgiving of 2014 was when I did my Big Chop. I just wanted a change with my hair since I always loved curly hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I always had long hair so I didn't know where to start. Also I wasn't comfortable in my skin. I felt lost at first. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually have a protective style, mainly braids or twists. I may take them out throughout the week. Weekends is when I wash my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Refresh whatever style I have. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Protecting my hair with a satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not since I did my big chop shockingly!
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. I do alot of braid outs, or mini box braids. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Lately protective do's since I spend most of my time at home. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Aside from failed hairstyles I attempted, no. I recovered from it by trial & error, and lots of practice! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? For me, a clean scalp, moisturized hair and low manipulation styles. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Stephanie and I am from NY 2. What is your hair type? 3C/4A/4B
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I wore my hair curly one day and my husband (then boyfriend) loved it. A diagnosis of Lupus in 2010 then made me commit to going back to natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I did not big chop, I transitioned. My hair type changed from 3B to 3C/4A/4B after pregnancy. Finding the right products and regimen to work with my new hair type post pregnancy was the most challenging part of my journey. I had to relearn everything. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I was once a week and cowash in between washes if my hair falls limp. I deep condition weekly. I listen to my hair as to when it needs protein treatments. I used to do it monthly but I realized my hair is protein sensitive. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I take down from a pineapple then I just shake, fluff and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I pineapple at night to preserve my curls. I add sweet almond oil to my hair and scalp every other night. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I straighten my hair once a year. I try to stay away from heat because my hair is prone to heat damage.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have never worn braids but I'm hoping to do so as a protective style in the future. I would love to try twists! 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I finger-detangle then use a wide tooth comb to minimize breakage. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I was 16 and went to use a hot comb on my hair. Growing up that was how my mother straightened my hair. I left it on too long and a chunk of hair towards the back/middle of my head fell out. I was devastated!..lol. It eventually grew back and I didn't touch a hot styling tool until I was done with college..lol. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I'm a huge believer in strength over length. You can have hair as long as Rapunzel but it doesn't mean anything if it's not healthy. Make sure you have a healthy base which starts with your scalp. I detox my scalp and hair once a month with Apple Cider Vinegar and Bentonite Clay. Both tutorials are available on my YouTube channel. I also eat very clean and healthy. Healthy hair starts from the inside. Whatever you are eating regularly will show in your hair and skin so I'm always mindful of what I eat. Make sure to drink plenty of water as well! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi, my name is Appolonia and I was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Trinidad and Tobago 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a little crazy. It's 3C, 4A, 4B and 4Z in the middle lol.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural for many reasons. In 2012 I had severe hair loss due to Lupus. I decided to transition to natural hair because I didn't think I would be comfortable doing a big chop. After transitioning for a few months I was so eager to see my natural curl pattern (And I had a little mishap while washing my hair lol) so I chopped off all the relaxed ends and rocked my natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? After I did my big chop a part of me was unhappy because I felt like I was nothing without long hair. I had to deal with the negativity from society and my family which was really the most challenging part. I was always known as the dark skin girl with long relaxed hair but now I'm known as the beautiful black woman with beautiful kinks! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I keep my regimen very simple. I cowash and deep condition my hair every Sunday. If I feel like I have a lot of build up I wash my scalp with apple cider vinegar. Every other Sunday I add oil rinsing to my regimen and that's pretty much it. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I do something called the shake and go method (I think I made this up lol). I literally get up, spray my hair with my moisturizing mist (water, aloe vera juice and coconut oil), shake my hair and leave the house. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I pull my hair up into a pineapple and tie my hair down with my satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only heat I allow my hair to get is from my deep conditioning process under my dryer. Other than that I don't use any heat in my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I've been natural for a year and for this past year I've braided my hair 3 times. Once for a cute protective style and the other two times I just had big braids under my wigs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? My fingers lol. I own 1 wide tooth comb. I haven't invested in a Denman brush because my fingers get the job done. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose but because winter is soon approaching ill be doing more protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? While in the shower during my transitioning stage my hair got really matted. I just said to heck with it and I chopped my hair off. That's the day I became natural lol. So I turned a tragedy into a triumph. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip will have to be patience. Love your hair and the journey you're embarking on. It's going to have good days & bad so have a little patience and enjoy the ride. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Nogah, I’m from Philadelphia but currently live in New York 2. What is your hair type? I have both 4a and 4b textures in my hair
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had my last perm on October 2013. I transitioned for about 3 months before I big chopped. After chopping I had about 2 inches of hair, it was very short but I didn’t care. I was so happy to be natural. I decided to go natural because I was tired of the weaves, perms and damaged hair. I tried to go natural a few years earlier but gave up when I didn’t see immediate results. This time around I was dedicated and promised myself I would stick with it. Almost two years later I am so glad I did. Natural hair is more than a trend, for me it was really about falling in love with myself and not allowing the media or anyone else to defy the standards of beauty. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I think the most challenging thing about going natural is the knowledge! Some of us have no clue how to take care of our hair. Products, styles, regimens, all of it can be very over whelming. There is a lot of trial and error to figure out what works for your hair, but with patience and consistency you can see progress. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen is either cowashing or shampooing but I always deep condition at least once a week or every other. Whether it’s a hot oil treatment of hair mask, deep conditioning is so important in your hair’s health and growth. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every morning I take down my nightly twists or loose puffs. If twists I apply oil or serum to my fingers to reduce frizzing. If I slept with puffs then lightly spray my tips to moisturize and reshape my fro. I apply water and eco stylergel to my edges, brush them neatly and wrap a silk scarf around for 10 minutes to lay them down. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nightly routine is always moisturizing. Type 4 hair tends to be the driest of all textures so keeping my hair, especially my ends, moisturized and sealed are important for me. After moisturizing I either put 8-10 chunky twists in or 2-3 loose puffs to preserve my curls. I then massage black Jamaican castor oil on my edges, crown and any weak spots. BJCO promotes hair growth and thickness. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Never. The only ‘heat’ I apply is my heating cap while I deep condition once a week.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I love braids as a protective style. I install braids in my hair about twice a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither. I mostly finger detangle. Type 4 hair is the most fragile, so I try not to use too many combs, brushes or tools. I do take a small comb to my ends to smooth them out if necessary. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I would say my hair is normally loose. I leave protective styles in for 5 weeks, afterwards I like to give my hair a break for a few months before installing another protective style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I first went natural I used to apply oil to my dry hair every day, like it was a moisturizer. I didn’t know it should’ve been layered with a cream or leave-in. My hair was sooooo dry, it broke off and shed like crazy. In the mornings as I took my twists down I would have so much hair in my hands and on the floor, I thought I was going bald! Later I found out about the LOC method and that transformed my hair from brittle hot mess to shiny moisturized curls 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for healthy hair is moisture, moisture…moisture! If your hair is dry it will break and split. We may think our hair isn’t growing when really it is but it’sbreaking from being dry. Keeping your hair moisturized and your ends seals protects your hair from knots and tangles. Find out which products and moisturizing method works best for your hair and stay with it. Be consistent and patient with your hair. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is AnnMarie B & I'm from NYC. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is mainly 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural & stopped perming my hair about 10 years ago but it's been 2 years since I've embraced my curls 100% & went heat free! Honestly, I came across an interview that SZA (recording artist with awesome hair) did with vogue & I totally fell in love & instantly started missing my natural curls. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was me & my self esteem. I was so conscious of what people would think of my hair, it was super short & curly & I felt so insecure. It took me a while to get over it & once I did that's when CoolCalmCurly was created. That's when I knew there's purpose in my hair journey. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I make sure to steam my hair & pre poo overnight with a coconut/avocado oil mixture. I wash my hair with a sulfate free shampoo once a week, in between I'll cowash if needed. I also deep condition & style my hair once a week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning routine is a breeze, I just take it down from being in a pineapple, give it a shake, pick my roots a bit & I'm out the door! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I massage my scalp for 3-5 minutes & then I pineapple my hair with a satin bonnet to preserve my curls. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only time I use heat is when I'm doing a steam treatment or sitting under my hooded dryer while deep conditioning.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I haven't braided my hair in years! High school is the last time I can remember braiding my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb all the time. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is usually out. Here & there I'll twist it up or put it in a bun but 9 times out of 10 it's out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I had one of the worst experiences ever: I battled with eczema when I was younger & it spread to my scalp. One day I got a perm, wash & set and wrapped it. The next morning I had sores all over my scalp & my scalp pussed so badly that my hair stuck together. Stuck together to the point where I couldn't even unwrap my hair! I had to use a medicated shampoo/conditioner for about 6 months. That was the day I stopped perming my hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture is key! Dry brittle hair isn't going to do anything but break. Make sure weekly deep conditioning & incorporating daily moisture is a priority. Create a hair routine & stick to it! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Melissa Small, a Jamaican born natural hair enthusiast who now resides in Queens New York. 2. What is your hair type? Hair type is 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
On June 10, 2015 I was one year completely natural. I started transitioning May 21, 2014 because of my love for big healthy hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me would be the whole transitioning process. Dealing with 2 completely different hair textures was a lot of work. But the end result is all worth it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen would definitely be to deep condition weekly. My 4C hair needs a lot of moisture and this does it for me. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Daily morning regimen varies depending on the style I'm wearing I wear a lot of protective styles so I just get up and go. When my hair is in twist for plaits definitely a little coconut oil and separate and use my good ole pick! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is already styled in a twist out I do the pineapple method and put on my satin cap. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I use heat when I weekly deep conditions, I sit under a hooded dryer. I did blow out my hair after one year of being natural but that's about it. I've never flat ironed or anything like that. At least not yet.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I love some box braid long and short. I do this quite often about 3-4 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both!! Wide tooth comb mostly in the shower or when I wash my hair and denman brush while twisting or plaiting to make sure all the knots are out. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Half and half I do both. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes when I first big chopped I was uncomfortable with the length of my hair so I immediately installed a weave and flat ironed my leave out. Bad idea!! Heat damage!! I'm still recovering slowly by clipping off those damage ends. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip I would say is deep conditioning often. Find a regimen that works for you and stick to it. This can make your 4C hair so manageable. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My names Alejandra. I was born and raised in Bronx. New York. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 3B.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I’ve been natural ever since I was a kid, but ended up suffering heat damage from straightening too often. I eventually decided to stop applying heat so often back in 2012 and have kept up with my regimen since then. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I would have to say the maintenance was the biggest challenge for me when I made my decision. From making sure to deep condition once a week or use a protein treatment at least once a month. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but once I got the hang of things I was good to go. 5. What is your weekly regimen? As far as my weekly regimen I’ll co-wash one week and shampoo wash the next. I make sure to deep condition once every week as well after all the manipulating my hair has gone through. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I’ll usually just take my style down, apply my favorite oil to the ends of my hair and I’m out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Twist and refresh! Lol if I feel my style can use a bit of loving I’ll just re-braid it or re-twist for the night. If not then I’ll just pull it up into a pineapple and protect the style with my satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use it very sparingly. I went from straightening my hair once every 2 weeks to now straightening once a year or every 8 months depending on how I feel or if I’m getting that "straight hair" itch.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid it every night lol. As far as a protective style no, but I’d love to get some done soon to give my hair a break for a while. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? That’s a good one lol. I’ve been a fan of my widetooth comb for YEARS but the denman brush has stolen my heart and makes it super easy to detangle my hair so much faster. Denman brush it is. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally it’s loose 24/7. I just love having my fro out it feels natural to me and just suits my lifestyle a lot better. I’ll do a protective do maybe once a week if necessary but other than that you’ll usually catch me with my fro out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I think the only hair tragedy I had once in my life was excessive shedding at one point. It was really scary to see so much hair coming out all at once. I ended up recovering from it by using protein treatments as well as not manipulating my hair too often, once I did that my hair grew right back out. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Consistency. I think it’s the biggest thing for maintaining healthy or long hair. Length will come in due time; as long as you’re consistent, give your hair the love it needs and make sure you're using the right products that you’ve found work for you everything else just falls into play. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
JoAnna, New York City, USA 2. What is your hair type? 4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I made the decision to return natural the day I relaxed my hair after transitioning for 7 months. Overall, being natural was more cost-effective, I was bored with straight styles and I wanted a new look. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? In the initial transitioning process, it was caring for both hair textures. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I pre-poo my hair with coconut oil by Applying the product directly on my scalp in sections, massage using the tips of my fingers and finger detangling to remove shed hairs. I usually cowash. If I have product buildup, I use a clarifying shampoo and follow up with my staple conditioners. I always wash with my hair in sections. The last step is the L.O.C method. With my hair still in sections, I unravel each twist and apply a leave in, oil and twisting butter. If I am doing a wash and go style, I do not use the L.O.C. Method. I skip the oil and cream and only apply the leave in. It depends on my mood if I apply gel afterwards. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My hair is mostly in a protective style. If it's not taking down twists for a twist-out, it's just to spritz my hair with a leave-in or water, conditioner and oil mix. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use an oil to massage my scalp (castor or coconut oil) and spritz with a leave-in. I sleep with a satin scarf on my head. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Only when I get a trim twice a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair quite often. I do a lot of braided up-dos. I add extensions occasionally. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both tools have been beneficial for me with my hair styling. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? The majority of the time, I have a protective style. It's just easier to manage with the busy lifestyle I have. I wear my hair loose on weekends and sometimes special events. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I used to have a dry scalp. After doing research, I switched up my regimen, increased my water intake and used more oils and it it controlled now. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Patience. I never thought my hair was growing fast enough and after comparing pictures even within the same year, I see a difference. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
