An Alternative to the Big Chop: The Stepped Chop!

Do you want to go natural? Want to do the Big Chop (BC) but can't face it? Well, there's an alternatives, the Stepped Chop! That's my name for it.

The biggest reason that most people don't or can't big chop is the psychologically trauma of the whole thing. Most girls love the dead cells that are their hair and the longer your hair, the harder it is to BC.

Society has conditioned us to believe that longer is better. Well one of my Twitter followers just showed me this alternative:

She had 10-12 inches of hair so to ease herself into having shorter hair she chopped off three inches off at a time over a ten day period.

If this appeals to you then do the same. Book three salon appointments on three consecutive Saturdays and remove a third of what needs to go each time.

I must say, I hadn't thought of this alternative before but it totally makes sense. If you have any friends that are too scared to BC tell them about the Stepped Chop. Going natural doesn't have to be so scary!

Sometimes it has nothing to do with psychological it has to do with the factor some ppl are use to maintaining and caring for their lenght of hair and would not know what to do if it was a different lenght. I speak from experience. I will do the step chop but I can't do the big chop b/c I would not know what to do with my hair if it was that short.

Hey Nita,

That is totally true but managing long natural hair is a lot different to managing long relaxed hair as I am beginning to find out with my longer natural hair. However, I think that once I'm in control of the whole tangles thing as opposed to it controlling me, life will get much easier.

There are quite a few YT vids of naturals with short hair perhaps you might find some inspiration there?

My best
Heather

Omg! I never thought about doing a stepped chop. That's a really good idea for people who want to be natural and are scared of the "shock"

I want dreads but don't want to cut my hair. I haven't had a perm in 3 months. With me sweating a lot have my hair not straight or even close. Please advise.
