Great products for Natural Hair Found in England, UK

30/8/2013

Two years ago when I first went natural it was so challenging to get good products for my natural hair in the UK, even in London.

Nowadays, whilst you can't get some products that are available in America (including, for the moment, Neno Natural's stuff) availability has improved a lot.

Here are products that you may want to try. I haven't tried all of them but they all have great reviews. I'm currently using Orgain Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner and although it is so cheap, it is very good. High price does not always mean, good product!

Rhassoul vs. Bentonite Clay Natural Hair Mask

25/8/2013

I tried my Clay Mask Recipe For Natural Hair with both rhassoul clay and bentonite clay. These are my conclusions:

Minerals and nutrients

Rhassoul clay has more than bentonite clay

Moisturising effect on hair
Using my clay mask recipe both make the hair feel exactly the same once washed out. However, before you wash them off the bentonite clay feels as though it's having a more nourishing and softening effect. This difference goes away once it's fully rinsed off.

Detangling effect
Once you've washed both off you will find that the rhassoul clay treatment mask has detangled hair better than if you use bentonite

Easy of mixing
The bentonite clay forms a smooth mixture with water / aloe juice than bentonite clay. bentonite clay takes longer to get smooth

Recommendation:
If you want to choose one go with rhassoul clay, however, I would try both to see which one has a better impact on your hair.

How To Make a Rhassoul or Bentonite Clay Mask For Natural Hair

Bentonite Clay
If your scalp is dry and itchy and your hair is generally dry try this blend. This mask will cleanse, nourish and condition hair; it will also soothe the scalp. It includes oils for extra moisture. I would use this as a pre-poo treatment or instead of a shampoo.

Ingredients
  • 2 heaped teaspoon rhassoul clay (you can substitute with betnonite clay), use 3 heaped teaspoon if your hair is very thick or very long
  • 1 teaspoon d-panthenol (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon argab oil
  • 1 teaspoon broccoli seed oil or carrot tissue oil
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil blend + 7 drops rosemary essential oil
  • Aloe vera juice for thickness adjustment
Method
  1. Place all the ingredients except the aloe vera juice into a bowl.
  2. Mix until you have a smooth paste adding aloe vera juice a little at a time to get a thick, slightly runny paste.
  3. If your paste is too hard add some more aloe vera juice; if the paste is too runny add more rhassoul clay.
Application
  1. Dampen and detangle your hair as you normally would before your shampoo
  2. Rub the rhassoul paste onto your scalp, your ends and then onto the rest of your hair.
  3. Cover your hair in a shower cap or plastic bag.
  4. Leave the paste on for 20 to 45 minutes. Don’t let it harden in your hair as that may pose a challenge to wash out.
  5. Wash off completely. It is very easy to get all the clay out. It does not stick to you hair.
  6. If you feel as though you need extra washing power you can co-wash to make sure all the clay is out. Personally, I don’t do that.
Rhassoul and bentonite clay both cleanse and condition hair so you don't need to shampoo your hair or do another deep condition after this - this condition treatment does both.

Storage
This will keep for about 8 to 12 weeks in an airtight container. Personally, I would create a fresh batch each time as it will tend to become too hard. If you do store this and it hardens, add a little boiling hot water to reactivate the ingredients.

3 Great Benefits of Rhassoul Clay on Natural Hair

21/8/2013

Rhassoul or ghassoul is a natural mineral clay mined in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

Rhassoul is rich in silicon, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium and lithium.

If a hair recipe calls for rhassoul clay you can use bentonite clay as an alternative. You may find that your particular type of hair reacts better to one clay rather than the other.

Benefits of rhassoul
  1. Rhassoul cleans hair gently even if it is already dry.
  2. Rhassoul nourishes and conditions hair; it is richer in minerals and nutrients than bentonite clay.
  3. As rhassoul can help to balance sebum production and to regenerate skin consider using the rhassoul clay hair mask to help treat scalp conditions such as dryness, itchiness, dandruff and even psoriasis.
Don’t store or mix rhassoul in a metal dish as its effectiveness may be reduced. Use glass or plastic. Importantly, note that clays can dry hair out so don’t use clays too frequently; once every four to six weeks should be enough to enjoy the benefits.

4 Benefits of Bentonite Clay For Natural Hair

19/8/2013

Picture
Bentonite clay is an odorless, non-staining, impure clay that mostly consists of montmorillonite. It feels very fine and “velvety” to touch. Bentonite is formed from a reaction between volcanic ash and weather elements including water.

Bentonite can be found in several areas around the world but the greatest concentration of bentonite is found in the Great Plains area of North America.

The different types of bentonite are each named after the dominant element: sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite, potassium bentonite, aluminum bentonite and so on.

A high quality bentonite clay should be gray or cream. A white powder would suggest it’s been bleached or over-processed in some other way.

Bentonite is useful for
  1. Clarifying and cleansing hair because it binds to and attracts dirt and other impurities.
  2. Conditioning and moisturizing hair
  3. Calming skin/scalp conditions such as eczema
  4. Nourishing hair. Bentonite is not as rich in minerals and nutrients as rhassoul is but it does contain some and these would be imparted to hair.

Don’t store or mix bentonite in a metal dish as its effectiveness may be reduced. Use glass or plastic. Importantly, note that clays can dry hair out so don’t use clays too frequently; once every four to six weeks should be enough to enjoy the benefits.

How To Trim Natural Hair

9/8/2013

Trimming natural hair is simple.

When to do it: on wash day.

What type of scissors to use: use very sharp scissors not blunt ones to create a clean cut. If you use blunt scissors you will encourage the development of split ends.

How to do it:
  • After you have rinsed out both shampoo and conditioner, apply your leave-in conditioner or moisturiser.
  • Using a wide-tooth comb make sure your hair is well detangled before you twist it for air drying.
  • Twist your whole head then,
  • Once twisted trim the end of the twist.

But will my hair be even?

It will be even enough. Natural hair is not like relaxed hair in that it doesn't line up on your back so each strand does not need to be exactly the same length. Trying to comb your hair into an afro and then trimming your hair that way will likely result in more hair being chopped off and less length retention over time.

How To Stop Weaves From Making Your Scalp Itchy

7/8/2013

Does your scalp get all itchy when you put on a weave?

This could be because you're sensitive to the alkaline base on the weave or other hair. Some people think they are allergic to weaves or to synthetic hair but frequently they are just allergic to the alkaline base designed to make synthetic hair more shiny or softer. The solution is to wash the hair before use. This is how:

Ingredients:
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Castille Soap

Method:
  1. Pour luke warm water into a large plastic tub (e.g. a baby bathing tub) or your bath tub.
  2. Add a cup of apple cider vinegar.
  3. Add the hair neatly so that it doesn't get tangled and let it sit in the luke warm water for 15 minute. Squeeze the hair a little to release the alkaline base.
  4. Drain the water with the ACV in it from the tub and refill with fresh water.
  5. Add a little castile soap and wash the hair in that.
  6. Rinse in clean water then air dry it before use.

I'm doing Everything I can But My Hair's Not Growing, what Do I do?

3/8/2013

Picture
Picture
Picture
I am 2 years and 3 months natural in the above pictures
This is a total FAQ. I get one or two emails daily to this effect.

My answer is simple:

1. Download the free ebook and take the tips in there seriously, especially the bits on protective styling and massaging the scalp with the Neno Natural's Hair Growth Stimulator.
  • If you prefer video, then watch my hair growth tips on YouTube.
  • If you prefer audio then subscribe to our iTunes podcast. Our podcast series will be fleshed out over the course of 2014.

2. Try these products: http://www.nenonatural.com/products.html

I suggest several because although these are all good they won't all work for every head of hair.

3. If you want to know my regimen, the is my current Weekly & Daily Natural Hair Routine.

NOW, HOW MUCH GROWTH SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

1/3 to 1/2 an inch a month or about 4 to 6 inches a year (I think I get about 4 to 5 inches after trims)

HOW LONG CAN HAIR CONTINUE GROWING FOR?

4 to 7 years is the average, however, it can be as short as 1 year or as long as ten. Just to put this into perspective: if your growth cycle is one year and your rate of growth is 4 inches per year, you can never ever have more than 4 inches of growth. It is genetically impossible.

However, if your hair has growth potential but hair care practices are messing you up then the free eBook How to Grow, Long, Health Hair will sort you out.

Love and peace,
Heather
