Thick Hair As A Disorder: Pili Multigemini - One Follicle Several Hairs

29/11/2013

Okay, we've all seen those naturals with extraordinarily thick hair: when they twist their hair it looks like its braided but yours can never achieve the same look - it's all "gappy".

I have news for you, some people with very thick hair have a rare condition called pili multigemini. This happens when a single hair follicle has multiple hairs growing out of it. Although it is a genetic disorder it's an awesome one to have if it's only on your head. Unfortunately, for some pili multigemini occurs in other regions e.g. on the face, back or even knuckles. Estimates suggest that around 200,000 people in the United States have the condition.

I'm not saying that everyone you see with thick hair has it (I have no idea who in the natural world has it or not) but I am saying that extremely thick hair is not the average. You cannot aspire towards it because everyone has their own genetically predetermined hair density.

I recall someone on the Facebook page stating that Oprah's hair stylist says she has about 3 hairs growing out of every hair follicle on her head resulting in very thick hair. I don't know if this is actually true but how awesome.

It's true that many people view pili multigemini as a problem because they have it in inconvenient places; I hope scientists find a solution to their problem.

On the other hand, I also hope scientists can CREATE pili multigemini scientifically for those of us that want it on our heads because I want thick hair like naptural85 and CharJay! lol, the grass is always greener on the other side.

I won't be ungrateful though, I am happy with my hair's thickness.

How To Take Care of Natural Hair With Color / Dye

28/11/2013

Picture
When you color natural hair the hair cuticle is lifted to allow the color in and needs to be flattened properly. A fair amount of protein is also lost during the color process.

To ensure minimal damage to the hair after it's been colored:
  1. Follow any hair coloring session with a high quality DEEP conditioner.
  2. Follow the deep condition with a lemon rinse or an ACV rinse to ensure the cuticle is flattened properly.
  3. Moisturise your hair daily to re-fortify it.
  4. c

Making the color last:
  1. Don't shampoo your hair with a sulfate shampoo. This is identified on shampoo bottles as: sodium or ammonium lauryl or lareth sulfate. Sulfate rich shampoos are very strong and will make the hair color wash out more quickly.
  2. Deep condition regularly.
  3. Ensure your hair never gets dry.

How Often Should You Color The Regrowth

Due to the curly nature of our hair, you can wait a while before the regrowth starts to really show, probably as long as 6 to 8 weeks. If you're not bothered by having two colors of hair then I would wait as long as 3 months before coloring your hair again because dyes, even the natural ones, are a chemical that can cause hair damage.

The whole process of lifting the cuticle and flattening it again happens whether or not the hair dye is derived from natural or synthetic sources. As such you will always lose protein in the process thereby weakening the strands.

Hot Oil Treatment For Weak Natural Hair Ends

28/11/2013

Picture

Picture
If you feel your hair ends or your hair in general is weak and in need of some TLC get the following ingredients together and do a hot oil treatment (video tutorial below):

Ingredients
  • 20 to 30 ml coconut oil (about 2tsp is the coconut oil is solid)
  • Essential oils:
  1. Cedarwood
  2. Sweet Basil
  3. Bergamot
Method
  • Heat the coconut oil in the microwave in 10-second intervals until it's very warm to touch
  • Add 3 drops of each essential oil to the coconut oil and stir
  • Dip hair ends into the oil blend. I did this with my hair twisted up but you don't have to
  • Cover hair in shower cap for 15 to 20 mins
  • Wash hair with a sulfate-free shampoo then deep condition
  • Allow it to dry then moisturise and style as usual
Storage
Ideally, don't store, use it all in one go. If you made too much you need to store it in a dark glass bottle. The blend will keep indefinitely if stored in a cool, dark place.

Neno Natural on Capital FM, Malawi - 12-Nov-2013

25/11/2013

Picture
Capital Radio invited me to their station for a one-hour interview during their pre-lunch time "Chat Room" - it was my first ever live radio station appearance so I was very giddy.

The interviewer was Annie Chisala. She was my junior in high school so I wasn't nervous about the interview itself; I was very proud to see her doing well for herself.

My first radio interview was by phone with SA FM back in July.

Neno Natural On Television Malawi (TVM) - Malawi Broadcasting Corp.

23/11/2013

One thing leads to another; after being invited to Capital Radio then 101 FM I got invited to be featured on four television programs in Malawi:
  • Good Morning Malawi (in the Chichewa language)
  • My Story
  • Business Digest and
  • Mwaswera

Unfortunately, the only one we have a partial recording of is the one show that wasn't in English, Good Morning Malawi. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be in Chichewa either! I was raised bilingual so I spoke both Chichewa and English from the very start, however, I was always schooled in English.

News Flash: Winner of the $500 Cash Giveaway by Neno Natural

21/11/2013

I am very proud to announce Nikki in New York as the winner of the $500 cash giveaway. I spoke to her on the phone and immediately following the call PayPaled the funds to her.

I'm very impressed by Nikki who at 22 has managed to resist the temptation to buy a mobile phone. I am very pro-abstemiousness and inspired by her frugality I also paid the PayPal fees for the transfer as I am sure every cent will be well spent.

Nikki says she will likely spend the $500 on books for next semester. I am so happy for her and I wish her every success. See the below video for how the selection worked.

Christmas Present Ideas by neno Natural

18/11/2013

Picture
Many shops started introducing Christmasware to their stores like two months ago and I totally resisted that move because I feel they are over-commercialising Christmas.

For me, Christmas is more about presence rather than presents - spending more time with people you care about. However, it's also a great time to present a gift - I know I struggle for ideas so I thought I'd suggest some things your mum, sister, cousin or girlfriend might like. Everything is from Amazon.com. Some of it I sell, some I don't:

Books!

Lots of us use Christmas time to set new life goals for savings, starting a business or even a new career. One of these books would make the ideal present for a loved one at that point in their life - your over-achieving buddy!

Scarves!

I love scarves because they are so multifunctional - you can use them on your head, neck or to add a touch of class to a handbag. The first line shows our most popular large scarves and the second our most popular medium scarves. They are all fabulous in style and quality and will be very well-received as a gift (watch my YouTube video on how to use scarves):

Hair and Beauty!

When we added these headbands to our collection we had no idea they would be so popular! They are the perfect gift for a natural-haired diva. In addition, our classic Hair Growth Stimulator is perfect for any hair regimen.

And my favorite beauty product? Mac's Girl About Town lipstick with a layer of Bourjois lipgloss. I wear these in a lot of my videos.

Enjoy getting ready for the holidays!

How To Wash Oils and Hair Grease Out Of Bedsheets

14/11/2013

Picture
This tip is from Ms. Dalton:

Pillowcases and sheets will get oil and grease on them at times. There is a quick solution for this problem:

Once you notice that oil has soiled your pillow case or sheets put baby powder (any one will do even a cheap powder); rub the powder over the stain; the talc in the powder will absorb the oil then proceed to wash. It works every time..

Sex and Satin Bonnets - What To Do If Your Partner Hates It!

I would add "dump him" but some may consider that too extreme.

My real issue is: it's night time, the one time of the day when you should surely be "allowed" to just be yourself with no fear of judgement. I not only wear a satin bonnet I sleep in a granny nightie! They are more comfortable and luckily for me my husband is attracted to me despite it. Where do you stand on the issue?
Picture
Okay, call me naive but I thought when I asked the Facebook page about what they do if their boo hates the satin bonnet I thought most folk would be like "he doesn't care"!

The good news is that most guys aren't bothered by satin bonnets, however, some guys simply don't like the look. I don't know why. My Harry isn't bothered by it at all. He's worn one to bed a couple of times to support me. He's a real keeper that boy!

First, don't worry if your boo doesn't like it, you're in fairly good company. There seem to be two solutions:
  1. Switch to a satin pillowcase
  2. Talk about it until he understands why you need it.

  • Okay, so have any of your husbands or boyfriends admitted they don't find your bonnet sexy? What was your solution?!!
  • Has your satin bonnet ever led to an intense argument between you and your boo? Worse, a breakup?
