Maya Angelou & Natural Hair - What A Phenomenal Woman!

31/5/2014

Having left us this week I thought I would look up what Maya Angelou had to say about hair and I discovered she took part in Good Hair by Chris Rock - here's what she had to say:

Chris Rock: How old were you when you first got your relaxer?
Maya Angelou: Oh god. I was about seventy.
Chris Rock: Seventy? You went your whole life...
Maya Angelou: Not my whole life, I'm still alive!
And as a tribute, I wanted to share one of my favourite poems by Maya Angelou

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Dark Skin & Kinky Hair Making A Beautiful Dent On The Red Carpet - Lupita Nyong'o

5/3/2014

Picture
My love for Mrs Obama's dress sense and style has now got some solid competition in the form of Lupita Nyong'o. I watched the film 12 Years A Slave just this weekend and loved her acting so I decided to look her up.

There's a huge amount of discussion going on in the blogoshpere regarding her race, ethnicity etc. Apparently she is the daughter of a Kenyan politician but was born in Mexico in 1983 where her father was staying to avoid political persecution. She left Mexico when she was one but still has a right to the passport because she was born there.

I love how when you do well everyone wants to claim you as theirs. It happens all the time in Britain too: one minute you are an unwanted immigrant, the next minute you win a prize and you're all of a sudden a prized "British darling"! Anyway...I digress...her nationality is not what is of interest to me, what is are her unique style of dress and of course, her kinky tresses!

Lupita is not only really fit but she has her own unique style. She loves to use bright colours and they look fabulous on her. Her use of colour is most inspiring.

In addition, many dark-skinned women complain about not being appreciated enough in mainstream media and Lupita is representing on that front with such grace and style.

I am so loving her being in the lime light. I was never into Alek Wek because I felt she was just a pawn in the hands of modelling agencies that wanted to make money out of her. Lupita, on the other hand, seems to really be her own woman.

Let's celebrate and enjoy her!

Who is Aevin Dugas? She's The First Guinness Book of Records Holder for "The World's Biggest Afro"

9/7/2013

Who is Aevin Dugas and how did she get into the Guinness Book of World Records?

She is a girl from a Napoleonville, New Orleans in the USA. Back in 2010 her sister posted a picture of her on Facebook. A friend saw the picture and suggested she join an afro contest hosted by napturality.com.

On the back of that contest her 'fro caught the attention of the folks at Guinness World Records and they recommended that she get herself measured for the record. She did and as they say, the rest is history.

How long has Aevin held the record for?

Since October 2010

What are the stats on the afro?

Her afro measures 18.5 cm (7.3 in) high, 19.6 cm (7.7 in) wide and 132.1 cm (4 ft 4 in) in circumference. These measurements were achieved by Aevin Dugas on 4 October 2010.

Has she used relaxer before?

Yes, she did use relaxer until she was in her mid-20s. She burnt her scalp the first two times when she was a kid but "desperate" to fit in she continued using it.

As a child she was one of only 9 black children at her school. This was the main reason she wanted to relax her hair - because everyone else's hair was straight.

Natural hair revival for black women (a BBC report)

6/4/2013

It turns out that South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, is a natural hair supporter and has "urged" African women to embrace natural hairstyles and avoid straightening their hair using chemical relaxers.

It is true that relaxing hair is still crazy-popular in Africa but natural hair is making a comeback there as it is in the US and in Britain. The more people African girls see with natural hair, the more they will come to embrace it as a normal and manageable thing to do. Let's keep blogging and vlogging!

Teyonah Parris's Pompadour Updo: Classy, Elegant, Royal

29/1/2013

Styled by Felicia Leatherwood, Teyonah Pariss (Mad Men actress) fashioned a pompadour updo to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

She clearly has natural hair and she styled it so elegantly I'm sure everyone on the red carpet was green with hair envy - even the straight-haired girls who tend to think straight is better.

This hair is the stuff dreams are made of for me: thick, healthy, luscious and kinky. There is no denying that this updo more than completes the outfit!

Perspectives on why some girls went natural & a hair style, "The Pompadour"

14/12/2012

I like hearing perspectives on why other people decided to keep their hair natural and in this video a few girls do that. It's short, sweet and has the added benefit of teaching us a new hair do called "The Pompadour". Enjoy.

My mum started relaxing my hair when I was c.4. I am anti relaxer because I believe over a 23 year period it reduced the health and thickness of my hair. Perhaps I just used it incorrectly, that said...this blog is focused on managing natural hair only. I don't try to sway people either way.

Going natural made me start enjoying my hair in a way I never had before. I personally find the natural kinks and curls much sexier and more authentic. That's just me though; everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Most Popular Natural Hair Bloggers in the USA

16/11/2012

As much as people think there is a wealth of hair vloggers & bloggers out there, there are very few that do it consistently and still fewer producing quality content; most hair videos concern hair styling rather than hair education; for a new natural like I was in 2011, education is/was FAR more important because I really didn't understand the requirements of black hair so my hair management to start off with was very poor, I'm still learning new things.
