6 to 8 weeks on average and 12 weeks at the very most.
Besides looking messy if you keep plaits in for too long it's also very difficult to diagnose any hair problems if you have extensions. Hard water could be making your hair brittle or your hair fibres might not be getting enough moisture or protein. To see these issues you need to release your hair from the plaits. There are things you can do to ensure your hair is doing well as discussed in these two blogs:

Awesome information! I used to leave mine in for 2 or 3 months but 3 months was really pushing it and I could tell it was pushing it after releasing my hair from the weave or braids. The weave was a nice transition but was thinning my hair out a bit and the africian braider's iron grip was always too tight even when i asked them NOT to braid too tight! Now that I'm natural, I think....I know my hair is healthier!

It's so easy to keep them in for too long. I know I start enjoying the low maintenance hair and I think...just another week! :)

Keep your hair clean, moisturized n comb it rarely.... n when u do need to comb it comb it with a wide tooth comb..... also blow dry it rarely too.... like never if possible just towel dry it... also always go to sleep with a protective style (like braids/cornrows) with a durag or wave cap to cover it n stop ur hair breaking on your pillow case..... finally use natural n organic products only in ur hair.. like shea butter and jojoba oil....

I use to get my braided all the time and pretty much kept it in for two months at a time. I never realized I could shampoo and condition my hair, while it was braided. So I did not, just waited until I took the braids out of my hair to wash it. I do how ever wonder why the very ends of my hair is clumped and matted together. My hair that has shed is still holding on, in the form of little balls.
