I've only just watched this video. When I heard about it I thought it's possible that people may have taken Sheryl's comments out of context, you know, with her being a comedian and everything; however, after watching it I think she was not only stupid by perpetuating "afro hate" but she might actually believe what she said.
If you don't want to watch the video this is the gist of it: Sharon Osbourne talks about how Heidi Klum ziplocks her kids' afros when she cuts their hair because she doesn't want to throw the hair away. Sheryl Underwood says "who would wanna keep afro hair?" The other host throws her life line and says, "you know, some parents like to keep their kids' first hair for memory's sake". Sheryl Underwood digs an even bigger hole for herself and says, "Well your kids have nice silky hair - but afro hair...now that's just nasty"! What do you think about all of this? Okay or plain stupidity? Importantly, now that she's apologised, do you forgive her?

I think this is a person that doesn't love her own natural hair. She has been brainwashed to think that our hair, and other parts of our bodies is not beautiful. I think it's very sad, that we still have african American women still don't love and accept who they are.

I understand Sheryl Underwood. First, she was being her "funny" self. Second, there is some afro hair that is not of the best quality. That is a fact whether we like it or not. However, some afro hair is of better quality than others. People can save their hair in spite of the quality because that's a personal thing. Third, Sheryl has us all talking about our hair. That is good marketing for hairdressers everywhere, and hair care products too!

This women has accepted the position of funny, ignorant, loud black woman because it has allowed her a certain level of success. She is not dumb, she knew what the implications were but didn't care. I don't watch the show, but if I did I would stop. If all "nasty Afro" wearing people stopped watching the show it would cost her her job, and that would make her think twice about her shucking and jiving.

Well said, and I could not agree more. She is an embarrassment plain and simple. I do not watch the show primarily because of her buffoonish act. I was very saddened that she would say this on national t.v. and then apologize on the radio to a largely African-American audience, as if only we were offended. My other sisters from different cultures dropped their mouths open in utter disbelief at her comments.

I understand the hoopla about Sheryl's afro-hair-is-nasty comment. But, let us be practical here. I have heard little children of African desent compare the quality of each others hair. They jest each other about who has better hair. Black women look for men with "good" hair in order to have beautiful babies.

I think Sheryl Underwood was serious about her comments, and is not aware of the implications her words would have on people in terms of how they would perceive her, and what they would think about ethnic hair. However, it is evident that she has been brain washed, and is a victim of socialization due to the fact that Europeans have socialized blacks to adopt certain standards of beauty, which has affected the way women of color choose to wear their hair. During slavery negative connotations to do with Afro textured hair started, and has left lasting effects on people of color.

She's totally been brainwashed - I wonder if she really regrets what she said or is just apologizing to regain her ratings.

We're a little bit behind here in South Africa when it comes to "The Talk" so I didn't even know that she made those comments until yesterday. I don't put too much stock in when it comes to my hair. There is more to me than my hair so yes, I have had many hair styles. I've had relaxed straight hair, I've had pink braids, green braids and I've done the "big chop" three times in my life. Right now my hair is natural. I understand why people are mad at Sheryl Underwood for making those irresponsible comments. At the same time I'm not angry at her because I know what my worth is as a women of Africa and a women of colour. My hair does not define me. I'm proud of my culture and I show that through my morals and values and that is what makes me a women. To Sheryl Underwood do you boo boo. I just hope that the millions of Black women that watch your show don't think like you.

I actually don't have natural hair but I think Sheryl Underwood, with all her wigs, is full of self hatred. I was totally offended by her comments and I think that she got the information ahead of time that this was going to be discussed so that she could formulate her "comedic" remarks. I never understood her inclusion on the show because I think she is so crass but, unfortunately, I feel her negative comments are grounds for a campaign against her. What bothered me the most is the direct comparison between black afro hair and silky european hair. In that comparison afro hair was worthless and not worth keeping but silky european hair is fine to keep. I cringed so much at that I stopped watching the video, I could not bear to see the grimaces on the faces of the panel, who were all embarrassed for this woman who clearly did not value herself or what God gave her. She says she does not hate herself and it was a mistake - however many a truth is spoken in jest. There was no need to compare the two types of hair and which was more worthy of keeping.

Right ! It's been that COMPARISON for the past 400 yrs that's the real problem & she just showed the whole world that she really believes it. Ridiculing your own people is NEVER OK !!! She strikes me as one of those dark girls that may've been made fun of in her younger years & decided to make up for it by being funny ,putting herself down & acting loud & ignorant. , making people laugh at her stereotypical antics before they could laugh at her. I remember girls like that when I was a kid. They were usually dark skinned with short or very short hair. They seemed to choose one of these behaviors :withdraw & become shy, act hostile & belligerent, become promiscuous to get any kind of male attention, or act the loud clownish fool. In fact, in one city in the late 60s & early70s there was a violent girl gang made up of such dark girls. They would attack & beat up light skinned girls with or without long hair and any girls brown or very dark who had full heads of long thick hair. They would also try to cut their faces with razor blades. Here's a reference to them : http://kimpearson.net/?p=1021

Isn't she fortunate that someone saved the hair that was used to make that wig she was wearing?

I've seen this a while back and have commented on it on various sites. What she did was an embarrassment, shameful, disgrace and quite shocking. I didn't think that what she said, I could feel any more anger than what I felt. But I went onto her twitter account and there were people who actually thought that those of us who found what she said totally out of line, they actually backed her. They thought that we were over reacting, and should just get over it!. It was taken too far. I just had to shake my head in disgust and thought. You idiots just don't get it. They totally missed it. What got me even more her apology was appalling. Stating how hard it is for her no one understands. Some bleeding heart story. Wow she still doesn't get what she done. I'm a strong woman and allow most things to go over my head cause life is too short to focus on the those who are not worthy of my attention. But her statement was too much too ignore.

It is so sad to see black people hate themselves so much. She obviously has some issues she has to deal with inside her self. Black hair is beautiful! 19/9/2013 10:59:01 am
There are two issues; the first, she does not realize how others envy the fact that we can afro, dread, or blow it straight. The fashion magazines are showcasing white models with their interpretation of the Afro. Also, she is the typical coon, she thought she was being funny, when in actuality she was showcasing just how ignorant some of us can be towards our own race.

I want to jump on the banwagon that is against this woman but before I went natural I felt the same way and said the same things. It took a personal journey for me to change my view of my hair as a positive thing so while I do NOT like that this thinking is still being spread I can at least understand that she is just another, yet unenlightened mind.

Unfortunately, these days it seems like everybody wants to be Black except for those that are actually Black. Meaning that we as Black people are not embracing our culture, our hair, and our greatness as much as everybody else is. With that being said, I believe that Sheryl was just verbalizing how we as a people act when it comes to our hair. Apparently she doesn't know about the legacy of slavery and how it continues to shape our views. It's sad that we still suffer from this kind of unconscious internal racism and oppression. Maybe one day she'll (us all, really) take responsibility, own her comment, get educated on this topic and help to neutralize this form of self-hate...
