Why isn't it a good idea to wash natural hair daily?

Washing your hair once a week is enough.

Type 4 (kinky and curly) hair doesn't get greasy as badly and as quickly as straight hair does for the very reason that it is kinky or curly.

Why greasiness is not an issue

Sebum, the natural oil produced by the scalp struggles to move up the kinks, curls and coils of type 4 hair. This means that dryness is much more of a problem for curly and kinky haired types than greasy hair and overwashing just exacerbates the problem.

Tangling is a big issue

The washing process is prime time for hair to get tangled and knotted.
  • The shorter your hair is the more often you can wash it because it tangles less.
  • The longer, thicker and more curly your hair is, the less you need to wash it because it tangles a lot more (it also takes longer to get greasy)

But I go to the gym a lot?

Personally my hair doesn't take on a stench when I exercise even when I sweat heavily so I just stick to my weekly wash. I frequently make one of my workout days coincide with my wash routine.

Of course, your hair's moisture level, tendency to get knots and tangles and sweat pattern will be different to mine so you need to find the right wash-regularity for you.

I agree with your assessment on weekly washings. I work out daily, yet I wash my shoulder blade-length hair weekly. Even then, I co wash or wash it in two-strand twists to help minimize tangles. I do sweat, but my hair does not smell. I use a cotton ball dabbed in witch hazel (non-alcohol) to remove the perspiration from my scalp.

I used to wash my 3c/4a hair on a daily basis in the summer time and only twice a week in the winter. I'm now in a dryer climate and with the busyness of motherhood, I don't wash it as often. I've noticed it's not as healthy as when I washed it more often.

I totally agree that it's not good to wash your hair everyday...for me it strips all the natural oil and hair looks dull.

Hi I have been washing my hair daily sice I've been 13 now I'm 44 and I cowash daily because if my hair does not have water it acts funny so basically I'm used to everyday wash and my hair doesn't get dry I'm a 3b to 3c.

I would never wash my hair everyday. I have too much hair and totally unnecessary. I do every 2 weeks. I moisturize in between washes though.
