When you moisturise your hair do you focus on the new growth or the tips of your hair?

It should be the hair tips.

The tips of your hair are the oldest section and therefore the most vulnerable to breakage, split ends and fraying. Some fail to retain hair length because this weakness travels up the strand; the dry, weak ends fall off and expose more hair that wasn't vulnerable before leading to the same vulnerability and more breakage.

To stop this from happening give the tips extra moisture. Even when your hair is in braids/twists hydrate the ends at least every other day with a hair cream.

New growth is much less vulnerable to dryness because sebum (the oil naturally produced by the scalp) can travel part of the way up the hair shaft. The kinks, curls and coils of natural black hair make it difficult for this oil to travel all the way to the tips.
  • For extra protection, bantu knot your twists so the ends are out of sight.
  • When you venture out throw a hat or scarf on for extra end protection, especially in the winter.

Although new growth is less vulnerable, I personally encourage my hair to grow by massaging our essential oil infused hair oil, Neno Natural's Hair Growth Stimulator, into the scalp.

Even if you have braids with extra hair/mesh attached, treat the plaits as though they were your hair by spritzing daily and applying a leave-in conditioner, oil and cream regularly. Your ends will thank you by not breaking off.

I have natural kinky textured hair what some would call 'dread hair' because of how naturally dry and coiled it tends to be. At the very beginning of my natural hair journey I didn't have a clue about the first thing about natural hair. I had just chopped my fried tresses after perms and weaves had left them tattered beyond my control. This was a new start where after a lot of trial and tribulation I slowly started to learn what my hair responded well to and what habits lead to my hairs complete demise. After a year and a half my hair is shoulder length I am proud to say! I realized that hairSTYLES was not what I was after any more but rather hair protection and length retention. Since my hair was long enough to grip I have worn two-strand twists. I have a strict hair regimen.

CLEAN

Basically I wash my hair every two weeks after a hot oil/deep condition. This when I also can do a thorough de-tangle. The extra moisture and slippage of the conditioner does most of the work in loosening up tangles. After washing out the hot oil and deep conditioner with a sulfate free shampoo I finger detangle for a second time.

Moisture

I DO NOT allow my hair to dry after it is wet. That would be the end of me if I did. While my hair is still moist -- but not sopping wet -- I massage an oil on my ends and sometimes my roots (i don't have an issue with dandruff or itchy scalp at all). I DO NOT use petroleum or anything that contains it. For me it causes dandruff, weighs the hair down, and clogs the scalp. A light oil such as olive or coconut helps the water absorb into my hair. Next I seal that oil with a butter. Because my hair is so thick and coily an oil is not enough moisture. Shea butter is my go to sealant.

PROTECT

After cleaning and moisturizing my hair I begin a protective style that is going to keep the moisture in and protect my ends. Two strand twist are my go to protective style. I begin by parting of my hair in four sections as always to give myself a good sense of direction. Without the sections, it just looks as if it will take years to complete. So I just part, divide two strands and twist. I do this until my whole head is covered in them. If I see any frayed or loose ends I clip them. I tie my fresh twists down with a silk scarf to keep out dust, dirt, and just for added protection on my ends.
