1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Janet Yeboah and I'm from Ghana. I live in the U.S. 2. What is your hair type? I don't follow the mainstream hair typing system because I feel it's irrelevant to the health of your hair. Knowing your hair's texture, density, and porosity is more important in knowing how to care for your hair and what products to use. I have kinky corse texture, medium density, and low porosity hair.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped on December 6th, 2014. I decided to return natural because my relaxed hair was never healthy so I started researching on how to achieve and maintain healthy hair and I came across natural hair videos on YouTube and fell in love. I also learned about the harmful effects of relaxers on our hair and body and from that moment, I knew I wanted to grow my natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was trying to get the people around me to also understand and accept my natural hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash and deep condition my hair every 2 weeks and I moisturize every 2 days or whenever my hair feels dry using the L.C.O. method. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I usually have my hair in twists or braids the night before so in the morning, I just unravel, fluff, and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually re-twist/re-braid and cover with my satin scarf at night. Or if I'll be doing a puff or updo the next day, I simply put my hair in about 5 loose puffs and over with my satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes. I blow dry and trim every 3 months.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. I'll say once or twice a year during the winter months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I rarely use a Denman brush. I finger detangle during the week and use a Wide-tooth comb on wash days. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes. I installed box braids when I was relaxed and most of my hair broke off after taking them out. That motivated me even more to go natural so I cut the thin ends off and transitioned to natural hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Accepting and loving your hair in whatever texture, shape or form, healthy diet and drinking lots of water, keeping hair moisturized and trimmed when needed. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Gifty. I was born in Germany, where I live at the moment, but I’m originally from Accra, Ghana. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I lived in Ghana throughout my teenage years and wore my hair natural during my school days. I started using a relaxer when I was about 20 years old and finally stopped it in January 2014. Two months later, (March 2014) I had my “Big Chop”. I took this decision because, my hair didn’t look healthy, my edges were always short, and I couldn’t stop but wonder, why on earth I kept spending so much time and money, on fake hair instead of my real hair all these years. Secondly, I was motivated by my younger sister, who went natural a year before I did. And thirdly, which is my main reason, well, after hitting the age 30, I have learned to appreciate myself. Going natural, was part of the process. I got so sick and tired of chasing a kind of “beauty” just to feel accepted or to meet a certain “standard”. Now I know, I don’t have to proof anything to anybody. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once a week. I put it into a protective style, three strand braids, twists, two big cornrows, African threading or simply an afro. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I’m really concerned about my edges, so I spray them every morning with water and apply my sheabutter mix to seal the moisture. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is in a protective style, I spray it with water, then I apply my sheabutter mix to my edges and a small amount through my hair. If my hair was in an afro during the day, I do the same procedure, and put them into braids, before I go to bed. I use a satin pillow, so I don’t wear a scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No, I don’t use heat on my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, but I’m planning to integrate that into my regimen. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Definitely a wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I would say 50/50, because I like wearing scarfs and hats when my hair is loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh yes! LOL About three months prior to my wedding, I woke up one morning and realised my edges were gone(LOL). I was in shock! And although this seemed to be a gradual process, it didn’t really occur to me that I was losing my hair. No one ever told me this is normal after child birth. I’ve heard about post partum shedding, but I was so naive to think that, that was not something that runs in my family (I really have to laugh about my ignorance) since this is a natural process based on our hormones, to which many women can relate. Ever since I went natural, my dream has always been to get married, wearing my natural hair in a nice updo. So here I was, with my broken dream whiles time was running. When I finally got over my shock. I wanted to at least, do something that will promote hair growth and retention of my edges. So that’s where I decided to have a hair routine, and be serious about it. Plus this time, I made a sheabutter mix with natural ingredients like oils that were unrefined. I applied it day and night, to my edges religiously, but also, when doing my protective styles. Making sure they were not tight. To my surprise, my edges grew back gradually. And at my wedding, I was able to wear my hair in an updo, without anyone realising that, I had struggled with my edges months before. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I don’t comb my hair when it is wet, neither do I comb it when it is dry, I only comb my hair when it’s dump or well moisturized. Because that’s when it’s in its strongest state. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Love! I’m Ghanaian and I live in Brisbane, Australia. 2. What is your hair type? I’m not really concerned too much with hair typing, but I would say my hair is 4c if it had to be classified. But although it is kinky, it’s very soft and extremely thick, with tight coils at the roots.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Well my mom and one of my best friends actually inspired me to go natural. My mom has been natural for about 5 years now, and when I saw how healthy and long her hair was growing, and how beautiful and thick her texture was, I wanted to be able to experience that! Also, my bff has been natural for quite some time too, and we always had conversations about me going natural. She always had such simple and useful tips about maintaining natural hair, and the more she talked about it, the more I wanted to give it just chop of my relaxed ends! So after transitioning for about 7 months, in July 2013, I decided to finally do the big chop! It was the most liberating feeling! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Learning to be patient, and allowing my hair to grow at its own pace! I loved my Twa stages because it was so low maintenance. But when my hair got to that stage where the length wasn’t quite short to rock as a TWA but not long enough to really style, that when I found it challenging to work with, so I wore a lot of wigs during that time! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually braid up my hair for a few weeks at a time while I wear my wigs. When its time for me to wash though, I shampoo, condition and then apply Beautiful Textures Moisture Butter as my leave in. I add some Shea Butter and Coconut Oil, braid it up again, and then I go back to wearing my wigs for the next few weeks, and so on. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My hair is usually in plaits of cornrows, so sometimes I just apply a bit of coconut oil to my hands and apply it to my hair before I put on my wig. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I oil my scalp and apply some coconut oil on my edges nightly and wrap it with a satin durag. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No I haven’t used heat on my hair since my big chop. It’s not something I want to do just yet, but maybe in a year or 2, I’ll get a blow out and press my hair just to see how it would look.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I get my hair braided once a year when I go to Ghana. I love box braids and marley twists 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I finger detangle most of the time. I only use a wide-tooth comb on wash day. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I mostly wear protective styles. I custom make my own wigs, so that’s what I’m usually wearing. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No, I haven’t ever experienced anything regarding my hair that I would consider a tragedy. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Protective styling for me is key, because when I leave my hair alone and don’t mess with it too much, it does its thing! Also finger detangling has really helped me maintain length. Otherwise I would say to have patience. Your hair will take time to grow, so don't get frustrated that the growth isn't happening as quickly as you maybe expected! So really enjoy all the different stages of growth! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Trudy Susan aka 4cHairChick. Born and raised in Washington state, but my parents are from Ghana West Africa. I claim both J 2. What is your hair type? 4c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I’ve been natural on and off my whole life, but 2011 is when I drew a line in the sand and committed to doing away with relaxers for good. I made the decision to stop relaxing my hair because a girlfriend of mine who wore her hair natural inspired me to give my real hair a try. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Overcoming insecurities I had swept under the rug. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I’m more of a bi-weekly gal when it comes to my hair. On washday I detangle, wash, hydrate and stretch my hair. The following day I style my hair and rock that style for the week. When the weekend comes I play in my hair, which usually means a twist out, or a curl set. Sunday night it’s back to a protective style until washday rolls around. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It truly varies. If my hair feels dry I spritz water. If I’m wearing a style that I want to keep stretched then I’ll use my Shea butter blend. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I silk wrap it up and I’m off to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I’m not opposed to heat, but I’m cautious about the tools I use to apply heat and the temperature of the heat when I apply it. Occasionally I’ll do a tension blow dry on my hair, but when I use heat I prefer a hooded dryer.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I’m always switching my hair up so it’s hard for me to provide a direct answer on this. I do rock braids, but I rock twists more often. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Ekk, same response really on this as with the braiding question. I like to switch my hair up a lot so I rock my hair both ways it just depends on my mood. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I took a trip to Switzerland several years back for my cousin’s wedding. Prior to leaving I went to get my hair braided at an African Braiding Salon and the braider annihilated my hair. She used a rat tail comb to detangle, she blow dried at high heat…I should have walked out, but I needed my hair styled a specific way for the wedding so I had to endure the drama and basically cut off the damage after I took the braids out. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Drink a lot of water. More important than healthy or long hair though in my opinion is to focus on your personal esteem. Love yourself as you are and I have found that truly loving myself changed how I treat myself. I care about fitness, I care about what I eat and I care about how I look. Not for others, but for me. My natural hair journey reminded me to take care of my temple. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Naa but I go by AfrodivaNally on social media and I’m from Ghana, but currently living in Norway for my master’s degree. 2. What is your hair type? At first it was difficult to find out exactly what my hair type was so I would say it was a 4z, but I think its share a lot of characteristics with the 4c hair type, so 4c, it is!!!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Well, there were a number of factors that made me go natural. First, I was frustrated with scabs and burns from relaxers and my host sister from Texas had extremely long relaxed her when she came to stay with my family and on her return, she chopped off all her hair. I was really angry, but that sort of opened my eyes to the wider picture of the possibilities of natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I should say, finding information and products on natural hair in Ghana. Most of the blogs and videos that I would watch were in the US, and I had no means of getiing them in Ghana. That’s what even inspired me to start my blog to document all of this information so I could help others. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My regimen has changed a lot over the past three years and especially since I moved from home. But now, I know what products and techniques that work for me. It’s very simple now. I just co-wash with conditioner every week and deep conditioner every forth night. I just discovered oil rinsing and I plan to incorporate it into my regimen now. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Moisturise with whatever I can grab my hands on and style if I’m stepping out. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I just scarf my hair with a silk scarf or a satin cap and say good night!!! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No. Heat is a no-no for me. Maybe I will blow out and straighten when I reach 5 years. But the thought of heat damage scares me.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I stopped braiding my hair because it was a traumatic and painful experience. In short, I cut out hairdressers from my like unitl I found one, 2 years ago who takes instruction from me. Even, so I have braided my hair just about 3 times in the past two years in Ghana. However, when I moved to Norway, I braided my hair twice in the past 7 months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? None. I stopped using them and only fingers to detangle. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It’s mostly loose. I like having water run through my hair all the time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The only hair tragedy was when I asked a hairdresser to give me faux locks and I left looking like the image of typical Ghanaian witch. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I think it’s a lot patience and time and giving yourself the chance to learn what works best for your hair. It can be frustrating but it really worth all the hassle. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Jennifer a.k.a Akushika GoneNatural, originally from Ghana, West Africa but currently live in New York (US). 2. What is your hair type? Proud 4C ;)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
December 1st, 2011. I was curious to come to terms with the real me, au naturelle, kinks, coils and all. I was also tired of the constant breakage I experienced with my relaxed strands. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Learning to embrace my TWA (teeny-weeny-afro), especially after my Big Chop...it was a drastic change to what I was used to. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My schedule is pretty busy, so I wash/shampoo my hair every week and a half to two weeks with either my Shea Moisture Moisture Retention Shampoo or Black Soap Purification Masque. I sometimes do a pre-poo with Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner and oils. After shampooing, I do Deep condition with a DIY Avocado, olive oil, mayonnaise mask, or use my Jane Carter deep conditioner. For a leave in conditioner, I use the KimmayTube leave-in or Aloe vera gel mixed with oils. For moisturizer and sealant, I use my Shea-Aloe butter mix or my Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. I keep my hair in two strand twists most of the time, and wear my FingerComber unit as a protective style especially during the old winter weather. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I moisturize and seal my two strand twists with the Shea Moisture Curl and Style milk and avocado or emu oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I spritz my hair with my Shea Moisture Curl and Style hair mist, and seal in the moisture with it's Curl and Style Milk and an oil. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I try to stay away from heat styling most of the time. I do use a Huetiful hair steamer and Laila Ali Bonnet Hair Dryer to infuse heat to enhance penetration during my deep conditioning and hot oil treatments.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair in senegalese twists, kinky twists, puffy/fluffy twists from time to time. I still haven't perfected the technique for flat twists, but when I do, that will be a handy protective styling option. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both, depending on what exactly I'm trying to achieve during my regimen. I first use my fingers to detangle before using any combs or brushes though. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I love to keep my hair in protective do's especially two strand twists because it prevents excess manipulation and breakage. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? How did you recover from it? : Yes, once when I got my hair blown out and braided for a weave for a friends wedding. It was a horrible experience, they were not gentle at all with my natural strands, and I did loose a little hair off my edges because of the tension from the tight cornrows. I vowed never to go get my hair done in the salon, unless it's a natural hair salon. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisturize everyday, or every other day, and protective style, whether it's roll, tuck and pins, braids, buns, etc...it helps retain length. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc) My Youtube channel is AkushikaGoneNatural: I can also be found on: One of your most viewed YouTube is STYLING Senegalese Twists / Braids (15 OPTIONS) : Scroll down to watch it.
