1. What's your name and where are you from?
Kilsi Rodriguez. I was born and raised in New York City. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a mixture of 3C & 4A but leaning more towards 4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I've had an up and down journey with my decision to go natural. I first decided to go natural at the end of sophomore year in college because I went away to school and it was to expensive to get a relaxer where I went to school. Even though I stopped relaxing my hair in college I still straightened it every week. The summer after graduation I started to enjoy my curls so I decided to wear them. I went on vacation to Dominican Republic and they put something in my hair that took all my curls away and made my hair fall out. So when I got back I cut my hair into a bob. I no longer relaxed my hair, but continued to straighten it every week. Because my hair was "natural" my hair would get frizzy, so I decided to do a Brazilian straightener. Once again, my hair wasn't natural anymore. One day, I was looking at my hair and started to cry because I remembered I had curls and was actually natural. So I decided to stop doing anything to my hair and go back to how it was after I graduated from college. I transitioned for about 2.5 years and last year I did my official big chop. I haven't looked back since 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part is that I am Latina and as a latina, specifically Dominican, my type of hair is not viewed as beautiful. I do not have the "typical" Spanish girl hair that everyone associates latinas with. So getting past that was very difficult. Explaining to my family that my kinky hair was actually something good was difficult because I didn't believe it either. As a kinky haired latina you suffer such an identity crisis and you really have to love yourself and your hair before anyone else can love it too. I did a lot of soul searching after my big chop because moving forward I would have to stand up for my hair and I needed to make sure I was ready to do that. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Weekly, I do a style on Sunday. It may be a twistout, braidout, perm rods, etc. and I'll try to maintain it over the week. When it starts to frizzy up I get creative. I try to only wash my hair once a week. So I co-wash one week, and shampoo wash the next week. I also, deep condition weekly. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Let's my hair down a either 1. fluff or 2. create a style 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Tie my hair unto 6 ponytails, and sleep with a satin bonnet or on my satin pillow. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No direct heat. The heat I use is from my hair dryer when I do perm rods and its always on low.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I have braided my hair but only once. Will be trying it again in the fall. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman Brush 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally...everything. I love being creative with my hair. But if I had to pick I would say it normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? YES! I have Alopecia Areata (auto immune) So since I was five, I lose hair in patches. Last year right before I big chopped I had a very bad episode. Which is another reason why I big chopped. I recovered by getting a good dermatologist and applying ginger and cinnamon. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Drink lots of water, deep condition and don't be afraid of the scissor, we all need trims!!! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hey, everyone! My name is Sherelle and I live in NYC. 2. What is your hair type? I'm mainly a 3C curly gal with a front middle portion of my edges that have a mind and curl of their own.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to go back to natural in 2011 after being inspired on Tumblr by HeyFranHey. And also out of the sheer laziness of no longer wanting to spend my Sunday evenings frying my hair with a flat iron. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Finding products, establishing a routine, and figuring out which styles worked well with my lifestyle took quite a bit of time. I only figured out my hair could last in a wash n go for more than a day a year and a half ago and I've been natural for nearly five years! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I have more of an every-five-days-regimen right now, haha! Every five days, I cleanse/co-wash my hair, deep condition after every cleanse (ranging from 10 min-3 hours depending on time), apply a leave-in/curl styler, allow my hair to soak in the product and air dry for 30 minutes, diffuse, fluff, then go! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? While pretending to be the lead singer at a sold out concert and vibing to my music, I fluff my fro while my hands are coated in a hair oil. If my hair isn't feelin' it that day, I'll throw it up in my go-to half up-do and bang style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I tie a simple silk scarf around my hair to create a pineapple. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? About once or twice a year during the cooler months: Once to straighten and once to make a curling rod style.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I create my own braided/twisted protective style without extensions about once a season. And once a year for the past two years I've gotten either box braids or Senegalese twists. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman brush all the way. Or, better yet, fingers. They're free! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? About 99% of the time, my hair is down in a wash n go style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? During my last texturizer (and you'll see why it was my last), I got burned so badly that I couldn't undo my doobie wrap the next morning since my scalp had oozed so much that my hair was stuck to it. LAST TEXTURIZER/PERM EVER. After that I stopped going to salons to get my hair straightened altogether and went down the route of self-care and I haven't looked back since. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Consistency, moisture, deep conditioning, satin pillow cases, and trimming fairy knots/split ends. I know that's several tips but they're all super important! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kelsey Janae and I am from Atlanta by way of the Bronx, New York 2. What is your hair type? I don’t really like to hair type but if I had to guess, I would say 3c to 4a
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in 2010 and I was inspired by Brittany “Bre” Scullark from ANTM. I was obsessed with her hair and how she wore her big beautiful curls so proudly, and I wanted to do the same. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? In the beginning the most challenging thing for me was finding the right products and coming up with a regimen that worked for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consists of deep conditioning once a week and co- washing every three days. I normally rock a wash n go. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I keep my hair regimen really simple. In the morning I take my hair out of a pineapple (high loose ponytail) and I refresh my curls using my hand held steamer. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nightly routine is simply putting my hair in a pineapple and I always sleep on a satin pillowcase 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair but not often.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I rarely braid my hair. I think in the past 5 years I've had braids twice. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither! I use my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had a hair tragedy… a couple lol. I've colored my hair 5 billion times and then got heat damage, so I ended up big chopping for the second time in 2014. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Deep conditioning! It is key for healthy hair. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Angie and I currently live in the fabulous New York City. 2. What is your hair type? I would say it’s a mixture of 3B and 3C. I love having the two different textures because one is very defined and the other provides volume.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped all of my hair on May 30th, 2015 although I originally played with the idea back in 2010 and tried to transition but gave up after 8 months. I decided to go natural and big chop because my hair was long, yet damaged to the point of no return and I felt like I needed a fresh start. Not only that, but I also wanted to be more in touch with my true self and wanted to love myself more. I felt like going natural was a good place to start on that journey. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was acceptance. I grew up with the deep rooted mentality that I had “bad hair” and that it needed to be pin straight in order to look pretty or for me to be accepted by society. It took years and years to finally arrive at the realization that I shouldn’t deny who I am in order to fit in anywhere. All things considered, I'm not upset that I didn't go natural sooner because I know that refusing to accept my hair for so long was part of my journey to self love and discovery. The challenges lie within the journey and make my story mine and unique. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don’t currently have anything close to a regimen. I pretty much do what I feel my hair needs at the time. On some weeks I’ll wash it once, other weeks twice, other weeks not at all. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Again, nothing in particular. I style my hair depending on what’s going on with it (finger coils, wash n’ go’s, buns). 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a wash n’ go or finger coils, I wear a night cap to protect the curls. If not, I usually just go to sleep with it out and on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don’t use heat and I’m trying not to. I made the mistake of flat ironing the front of my head twice in the past year - once to put in a weave (hated it, never again!) and the other to do a length check. This made my curl patten in the front significantly looser, so I’m definitely staying away from heat for as long as I can.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I don’t braid my hair at all. However, it’s an idea I wouldn’t discard for the future when my hair is longer and maintenance becomes more time consuming. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb! I have something similar to a Denman and so far I’m not impressed. My curls don't look any more defined than when I use my fingers for shingling *shrug* Maybe when my hair gets longer, but as of now my wide tooth comb is cool. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I like to rock it loose as much as possible. You’ll catch me in a slick puff during my “down times.” 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No hair tragedies! *knock on wood* The closest thing was losing my hair in full strands/chunks shortly after I gave birth to my son. But nothing drastic or traumatizing, thank goodness! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Care for it, allow it to be (don’t try to manipulate it too much), educate yourself by learning which ingredients work well with your hair type, replace your conditioners with masques/deep treatments, and pay attention to it. The way your hair reacts to how you treat it is its way of telling you what it needs (or doesn’t!) 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Shivon Carolina and I'm from New York. 2. What is your hair type? I believe I am 4a with some 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had my last relaxer in October 2011, transitioned for a year and then big chopped in October 2012. Honestly it started with me being curious and sort of following the crowd but ultimately turned into a somewhat spiritual journey and learning to accept myself as is (still working on that). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was the short-hair phase and not feeling as pretty or as feminine and accepting my hair with all its kinks as is. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I mainly do wash-n-goes. I will do a wash-n-go once per 1-1 1/2 weeks. I try to deep condition weekly. Every now and then I'll do the occasional ponytail/puff, braid-out or perm rod set. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Take off satin cap, spritz hair with a mixture of mostly water and a little leave-in conditioner and some type of oil (lavender, grapeseed, Argan, almond, etc.) then smooth edges with gel and let air dry. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Throw on satin cap and go to sleep. Or if a manipulated style - spritz hair with water and either re-braid or re-roll (yes I re-braid or re-roll every night lol). 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Very seldom, if I'm in a serious rush and I did a wash-n-go and my hair didn't fully dry, I'll diffuse on low heat or cool for a few minutes. Other than that - no. So far, it seems I straighten my hair (flat iron), twice per year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? If I'm wearing a braid-out yes - in several plats for as long as I'm rocking it. I never wear braids as a style though... 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Ummm yes, perming my hair was a tragedy. I recovered by going back to natural (ha,ha). No really, in high school my hair was natural but I always wore it "pressed". I would either get it done professionally or do it myself. I had become what I thought was a "pro" until that one time when I was distracted and didn't test the hot comb on paper towel and put it directly in my hair...needless to say - comb was too hot and I burnt my hair off. I had short pieces, probably like 1/2 inch or shorter just sticking up and it was in the top middle area of my head. I had to try to comb my hair over it for a while but the short pieces would stick up through it. Once it got long enough I would do a little curl, just a slight bend to the pieces so that it could lay and blend with the rest of my hair, it eventually grew back lol. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Low manipulation, little to no heat, TLC and just simplicity... 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Natalie and I am from NY in the Albany area. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a mixture of 3C and 4A.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started transitioning in February of 2014 and big chopped in April of 2015 after 13 months of transitioning. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part was getting used to caring for my hair at each stage (transitioning, post big chop) and figuring out which products and techniques worked best for my hair through trial and error. 5. What is your weekly regimen?
6. What is your daily morning regimen? Spritz with water based moisturizer if hair is dry, fluff with hands, separate more curls and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Spritz edges and apply shea butter before putting head scarf around them and silk cap over the rest of my hair 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I try not to use direct heat often on my hair so at the most I’ll use it once a year. Sometimes I’ll blow dry my hair on cool or low heat if I’m pressed for time.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I don’t usually braid my hair unless I’m doing a braid out, usually I’ll wear two strand twists as my protective style for half of the week and then rock a twist out during the weekend. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I love wide tooth combs for detangling with conditioner or moisturizer but I love denman brushes for defining my curls with my wash n gos. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Some weeks I go the whole time with my hair loose but lately I’ve been trying to wear it in protective styles more often (usually a few days a week) to see if it helps me maintain healthier ends. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I think my biggest hair tragedy would be when I was transitioning and I decided to straighten my hair and my already thin processed ends thinned out to an awful level. I ended up having to cut off between 4-6 inches of hair and it really made me stay away from heat during the rest of my transition. The positive side to it was that once the weight of the hair I cut came off, my curl pattern became more noticeable and it pushed me closer to being ready for my big chop. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be to be consistent with your hair regimen. Regular deep conditioning, moisturizing when needed and detangling can prevent excessive dryness/breakage and help your hair retain its length. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Yaniris Acevedo, and I am a native of the Dominican Republic raised in New York City (Harlem), United States. 2. What is your hair type? I don't use the hair typing system. I refer to my hair as thick, tightly curled, and kinky curly.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I don't have an exact date as to when I began my natural hair Journey, but I do remember it was November 2013. I decided to go natural for a couple of reasons, one I no longer wanted to be bound to relaxers, and two my natural hair is part of my identity, and reminds me of where I originated from. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was managing both textures, which is why I decided to do the big chop after five months of transitioning. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consists of wash and go's it all depends in the mood or occasion. I may sometimes twist my hair or put my hair in a bun. I use sulfate free shampoos, and deep condition on a weekly basis. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't really have a morning regimen. I just wake up, shake my hair and voila it shapes itself again. I sometimes use Oyin hair moisturizer to revive my hair when it's out of shape. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use a satin pillow or bonnet, and sometimes I may just put it in a pineapple. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I only use heat when I deep condition my hair, other than that I don't use blow dryers or flat irons at all.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? No, I do not braid my hair. I did once, and have never braid it again since. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both the Denman and wide tooth comb. The wide tooth comb I use to detangle my hair, and the Denman to define my curls. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose, I just feel comfortable that way. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have not yet experienced a hair tragedy, and hope I never experience one. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to deep condition on a weekly basis, and keep your hair moisturized. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
I am Patricia Striggles from The Boogie Down Bronx,NY. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is mostly 4b but some sections are 4a.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I transitioned for one year then big chopped on May 16, 2013. I was at work and just had that feeling of "girl just cut it." So stopped at the local target, brought some Shea Moisture products, hair sheers and a box of blonde dye (big mistake I later learned). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The hardest part of going natural for me was styling. I am great at doing my own hair but the process took a lot longer now. Dealing with the two textures was hard. Also finding the right products was a trail and error experience. I was receiving subscription boxes and became overloaded with products that I really did not need. I Patricia was a product junkie. All my life I was used to having long hair (mid back length) and there I was with hair that barely passed my ears. It took a toll on my self esteem for a while. I would do my make up everyday to compensate missing a major part of my beauty. I constantly found myself having to deal with negative comment from people who could not understand why I cut my hair and a lot of "advice" on how to grow my hair long. It was annoying. Finally I fell in love my my new found hair and embraced my fro. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Regimen? Ha. I am still trying to find the right one. Currently due to my busy schedule I try to do my hair once a week. I do a twist out and wear the twist in the beginning part of the week (sometimes I wear a head wrap to be fancy). At the end of the week I take out the twist and wear it out for as long as I can. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every morning I take down my modified pineapple. It's just two pineapples. One in the front and one in the back. Then I fluff out my hair. I add no products because I do not want product build up. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I just put my hair in the modified pineapple, tie my edges down with a satin scarf and but a bonnet over my curls. If I want to lay my edges I will add a little edge control before tieing the scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Oh heat... How I love the way my hair looks when I use you but hate the possibility of the damage. Whenever there is a special event heat is the 1st things a lot of girls reach for. We feel we need should straighten our hair for the joyus occasion. Only to miss our curly hair in a few days. I was guilty of this but now I am embracing my curls. I try to not use heat. I use it about two or three a year at most. I am trying to cut back to zero or on time.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I braid my own hair. Once or twice a year I wear poetic justice braids to give myself a break from styling. I love cornrows If I had someone to braid my hair I would let them. I don't really trust salons or like their prices so I just do it myself. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Currently neither. I am team finger detangle. I do love both but I am trying to avoid breakage to retain length. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It is normally loose. I tend to protective style when I know I will not be able to take maximum care of my hair for a period of time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? As I stated earlier, I dyed some of my hair blonde when I big chopped. I did a little section in the front. It loosened the curls in that section and looked horrible as it grew out. I ended up dying it black and growing it out. It has finally reached the end of my hair shaft. Another time I decided I wanted a Dominican wash and set. The stylist did a great job. My hair was laid, but little did I know it was also fried. The back of my hair did not revert back well. My 4b curls were now 3b. I was sad. That section is growing out also. Now that I don't really do wash and go's it does not bother me. As you can see the answer to all my hair tragedies is to grow it out. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I get asked this a lot. Here are some of my tips..
14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
