1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Shana (aka Naturally SHE) and I am from North Carolina by way of Jersey. 2. What is your hair type? I am a 3c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped on October 18, 2014. My mother has been encouraging me for years to stop getting perms and I just wasn't ready. My sister went natural and I seen her growth and was intrigued so I decided to just chop it off. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Thinking about what I was going to do with my hair and what my boyfriend was going to think. (I did it without telling him first :) 5. What is your weekly regimen? My wash day is on Sundays. I wash my hair with shampoo, then I oil rinse with Coconut Oil, then apply my Deep Conditioner and style to last for 3 days then co-wash and style again until Wash Day. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Undo my twists or Pineapple and spray on water mixed with leave-in conditioner, fluff and go! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Apply a little coconut oil and hair milk and twist or braid my hair 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Hardly ever! Only when I diffuse. When I diffuse I use it on low warm then low cool. One day I would like to straighten my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
If braid outs count, then I do those pretty often. Any other types of braids I don't do at all. Not to say I may not do it one day. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide Tooth Comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose. I may try to incorporate more protective styles in the winter. I just love my hair too much!! :) 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I haven't had one so far in these 1 1/2 years but I did style my hair one morning, hated it so I rushed to rewash it and wore it in a bun to make it to work on time :) lol 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? It's hard to give one tip. Hmmmm... I would say keeping your hair moisturized all the time. Dry hair causes breakage and split ends. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is D. Marie and I am originally from North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? I have a mixture of hair types. My hair is 4a, 4b,and 4c in some areas.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I first decided to go natural back in 2009. I transitioned for two years then cut off the remaining relaxed ends. I still would wear it straight sometimes because I didn’t know how to do natural styles. I big chopped for the second time back in 2014 because of the breakage that I experienced after going to a salon. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me was to accept my hair for what it is. For a long time I compared my hair to other naturals that I see on social media. I thought that my hair was supposed to look a certain way. Natural hair is so versatile and beautiful in every way. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once every two weeks with a sulfate-free shampoo and deep condition with any conditioner that I have at the time. Depending on how busy I am I keep my hair in twists until I am headed out to work or out with my honey. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I like to take my time taking out my twists, which is my go to style. I always oil my hands before I take them out. I use coconut oil or olive oil to prevent my hairstyle from frizzing up. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I sleep with a bonnet on. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair from time to time but not too often. I sometime stretch my hair with a blow dryer and style. I sit under my hooded dryer to intensify the deep conditioner also.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
The last time I braided my hair was last year in 2015. It was braided in a top knot. I wear braids once in a blue moon. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both wide tooth combs and a Denman brush to detangle my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. I do protective styles when I am staying in for the day. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had several hair tragedies in my lifetime. One of them was when I had my sew-in cut out of my hair along with my real hair. To recover from it I carried on with my hair regimen as normal. Luckily my hair was thick enough to camouflage the bald spot that was at the top of my head! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? To maintain healthy hair my biggest tip would be to listen to your hair. If your hair is dry moisturize it. If your hair needs a trim cut it off. Hair has a way of telling us what may be wrong and we must listen. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Zoysia Gray (Zo-sha) and I am from North Carolina, USA. 2. What is your hair type? Well I have two hair types. In the front of my head, my hair is a looser curl pattern (3c) and in the back it's a tighter curl pattern (4a).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went "fully" natural in February 2013. It started off as me transitioning, and I hated the two textures (relaxed, and natural) together, so I decided to do the big chop on February 20, 2013. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? For me it was learning to love and embrace the natural me! I also struggled when it came to finding out what products worked best for my hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Co-washing every other day, and deep conditioning once a week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It all depends on what style I did. If I did some sort of twist out or braid out, then I take that down. But usually my hair just ends up in a puff lol. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Slapping a bonnet on ( lazy natural over here lol) 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only heat I use is a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don't really braid my hair, but if I do, it's maybe once or twice out the year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I like both, but my favorite it my Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose, my favorite style is my wash n go. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Welllll......the time I colored my hair at least 4 times in one week!!! I know I know, let me explain! So I had my hair orange for the longest time, and I wanted to get my hair back to black. Well me not being a hairstylist, I really didn't know how to go about it the right way. So I used a semi permanent black hair dye, which turned my hair to this brassy red color. It was cute, but not the color I was going for. So then I used another color (which I can't remember what color it was ) that turned my hair like this doo-doo green color. It was HORRIFIC!! Lol In the end, I connected with a friend of mine, who is a hairstylist, and she informed me on what to use to get my hair back black. I purchased a Demi permanent black color, and wha-laa, my hair was back black. Well now my ends were damaged from all the color I had put in it, so I ended up cutting all my hair off, which led me to my 2nd big chop on November 15, 2014. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My tip for maintaining healthy hair would be to learn your hair. If people would just focus on the needs of their hair, they would be surprised at how healthy it would be and how much growth you would retain. I've realized that my hair has grown and is at the healthiest it's ever been, just by me focusing on the needs. My hair loves being cowashed every other day, and deep conditioned once a week. Make sure to stick to a regimen as well. Your hair gets confused the more you keep switching up products or routines. And most importantly learn to love your hair!! Don't focus on what someone else's hair looks like, wishing it was yours! Curly, wavy, kinky, or Afro, it doesn't matter, ITS YOURS and you must focus on that! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi! I am Morgan and I am from North Carolina, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I consider my hair type to be 4C: kinky and coily.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have gone natural three times but recently did the big chop in March of 2014 to get rid of heat damage. I decided to get rid of my damaged hair because I wanted to embrace my natural kinks and coils and no longer hang on to unnecessary, lifeless hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was learning my natural hair. I had to relearn what my hair loves, likes and dislikes, what products my hair worked well with, the kind of ingredients to stay away from and even having to cut back on old habits like applying excessive direct heat. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Each week I make sure to deep condition and co-wash my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every morning I do the LOC Method by spraying my hair with a leave-in conditioner, followed by a lightweight oil and then a moisturizing styling cream. I also make sure to take my hair vitamins while eating my breakfast. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night time regimen is very simple and no matter the hair style it stays the same – I massage my scalp for 2-5 minutes and protect my hair with either a satin bonnet or scarf. That’s it! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair 1-2 times a year and I always use a heat protectant before doing so.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do not wear braids, with extensions, but every few months I will braid my own hair simply to wear a braid out the next day! And the same with twists; I also wear them as a protective style. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I finger detangle first and follow up with a wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally my hair is in a protective style such as twists, a bun or a wig. I have noticed my hair grows the most when it is kept in a protective style because I do less manipulation to my hair. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh my gosh – yes! My hair has suffered from heat damage, excessive shedding, dryness and breakage. For the heat damage and breakage, I simply cut if off. For the excessive shedding, I learned how to balance protein and moisture while also taking hair vitamins and my hair only sheds at a normal rate now. And, for the dryness I faithfully do the LOC Method (liquid/leave-in conditioner, oil and cream) and Greenhouse Effect and my hair continues to stay hydrated throughout the day. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is to take care of your body, inside and out. That means eating healthy, drinking water, exercising regularly, treating any health conditions/concerns and properly nourishing your hair. Stick to a regimen that works for your hair, protect your hair at night, limit heat and wear protective styles that are not too tight! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Whitley Shannon and I am from Mississippi, but I reside in North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? I have normal porosity, coarse hair. It is very thick! It is also multi-textured, mostly 4a/b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I received my last perm on July 27, 2012, and I transitioned for 17 months. I became 100% natural on December 12, 2013. I had previously always had good experiences with relaxers. My hair was always long and healthy. That was until I decided to add color into the mix. I made the mistake of getting my hair colored and then relaxed without washing it during the two weeks in between. So it was like perming freshly colored hair! My hair started to fall out and I was devastated. When my hair started falling out, I had decided I was going to let my hair grow out and then start back getting relaxers. But then I started falling in love with my natural curl pattern and it's thickness. Not to mention I had always had a love for big curly hair so this was my chance to finally have it! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was trying not to lust after, idolize and wish I had a different curl pattern. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I honestly do not have a set regimen. I try to wash my hair at least once a week, and I tend to mix up my product use. But whenever I do wash my hair I always use shampoo. I follow that up with a washout conditioner and I detangle my hair with a wide tooth comb while it is in my hair. I also try to deep condition my hair after every wash. I moisturize with water, a moisturizer, and seal with oil whenever needed. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning regimen will vary depending on how I styled my hair after wash day. Majority of the time it's a twistout. On these mornings I simply take down the bands in my hair, fluff, and out the door I go. If I have a wash and go then I will stretch and shape it with a blow dryer. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is in a twistout, I crisscross band my hair in about 6 sections to maintain the definition and length. I sleep on a satin pillowcase and that makes everything so much easier so I just go to sleep with any other style with no worry. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only time I use heat is when I am deep conditioning my hair under a hair dryer and stretching my wash and go with a blow dryer. I may flat iron my my hair once a year just to check the length.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair when I am trying to stretch it or do a braid out which is very seldom. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Ride or die wide-tooth comb user! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose! I don't like hiding my hair if I don't have to. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My only hair tragedy occurred when I had a relaxer that I previously mentioned. I recovered by going natural. That was an awesome recovery! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Find out what works best for your hair. Keep it moisturized. Have patience and enjoy the journey! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Daye and I'm from North Carolina, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I'm not really into hair typing because I have a mixture of curls between 3c, 4a and 4b. Yikes, right? :)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I wish I had some profound story about why I decided to transition to natural, but I started this journey in 2011 after getting a head injury and putting a relaxer on healing wounds was out of the question. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part about being natural for me is letting go of damaging habits. I loved my Dominican Blowouts and even after starting the natural hair journey, I still damaged my hair with heat, which resulted in a whole other transition which I started in 2013. It was hard to let go of the heat and learn to love my curls and the shrinkage that comes with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My regimen varies from style to style but my go to are perm rod sets. For that, I rod my hair once/twice a week using foaming lotions and hair milks. I co-wash, rather than shampoo, once a week to eliminate product build up, but retain moisture and about every other week, I do a combination of deep conditioning and home made protein treatments. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the mornings, I shake, fluff with a pick, and with some moisture on my hands, I finger coil the frizzy curls and separate the big ones. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I tie a scarf around my edges, with the curls pushed towards the top of my head, and put a bonnet around the curls. For some reasons, pineapples do not work for me, but this works perfectly. I'm able to get about 4-6 days out of my sets. I actually got 8 once. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use indirect heat (steamers, hooded dryers) regularly. There's this misconception in the natural community that heat is bad and that's not the case. My hair has low porosity and the indirect heat lifts my cuticles to help moisture penetrate the shafts versus just sitting on top. So if you feel like you have dry hair? Try sitting under a hooded dryer or use a steamer when you condition, if you don't have either but a plastic cap/bag around your hair and take a shower... As far as direct heat (curling irons/wands, blow dryers, straighteners), I only use those a few times out of the year. I've managed to figure out roller wraps and can straighten my hair with just the heat of a hooded dryer.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I cannot cornrow to save my life and I'm still working on twist outs. I do get my hair braided for protective styles at a salon whenever I need a break from manipulation. So far this year, I've had crochet braids about 3 times and Cherokee braids 3 times. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both, plus one! I start off with a wide tooth comb, follow that up with a Denman brush, and hit any knotting with a Tangle Teezer. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose, in a perm rod set. But I do protective styles frequently to give my hair a break from manipulation. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The heat damage I mentioned when I started transitioning was definitely tragic and I had to transition out of that by doing a long period of protective styles. I still have a couple of limp pieces and the left side of my hair is generally limp. I may have actually damaged the follicles there, it grows the fastest on that that side but it remains limp, despite no heat. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to learn a moisture regimen that that works for you. Moisture can promote growth, assist with length retention, and act as a damage protectant but what works for one natural does not work for every one, even if you have similar curl patterns. Everyone's hair goes through a unique journey, so it needs to be cared for that way. I recommend researching the LOC method if you're looking for a place to start. I've altered that and do a LCO version and that works well for me. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi!! My name is Mary Taylor aka “MsNaturallymary” on most of my social media (: I am a North Carolina Native who has recently made Houston, Texas my home. 2. What is your hair type? I believe I am a 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I actually transitioned for about 6 months and big chopped in the bathroom of my sister’s home after going to dinner with her and her husband. It was on April 14, 2012. I recall having a conversation over dinner with the two of them about going natural and deciding that night that I would do it. Her husband embraced the idea of my sister going natural. He shared with the both of us that we are both beautiful, and that whoever I am meant to be with, he will also embrace my hair in whatever state it is in. I was super nervous about the whole idea of cutting off all my hair! Prior to this event, I said I would never ever big chop. I felt that women who big chopped were super brave and that I just didn't have the courage to do it. I, also could not envision myself with such short hair. I felt that others would look at me funny or that it would reduce my chances of being able to find love. However, that evening, I don't know what came over me.. I somehow just picked up the scissors and went to work. And Believe it or not, I thought that my texture would be amazing! Remarkable even.. Especially after following several youtube vlogger’s journey who had also big chopped… Seeing how curly and voluminous their hair was.. I thought mine would look the same…. Well, mine was the exact opposite. lol After, I cut my hair I could not figure out how to get it curly.. My hair was also very dry. It felt like a Brillo soap pad. lol I had no idea what to do with it…It was too short to do a twist out or anything because I only had about an inch of hair.. I remember panicking… Having to go to work the next morning was the scariest thing ever! The thought of having to stand in front of my students or even pass my colleagues in the hall made me very nervous. I thought, what have I done?? And the next day… Boy, did I get looks. I remember one of my students saying “ Ms. Taylor, Why did you cut your hair?? You look like a boy!” So, of course, my already bruised self esteem at the time, was even more blemished. That same day I called a friend to beg her to install braids in my hair! I got those installed, wore them for about a month and continued to wear protective styles such as weave. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The unknown… Not know how I’d like it, what my texture would be, and how others would respond to this new look. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I currently wash every one to two weeks. I always deep condition when I wash my hair. Wash day at a glance consists of washing my hair with apple cider vinegar, co-washing with Herbal essence hello hydration and deep conditioning with a mixture of hello hydration, an egg, olive oil, and honey. My hair loves it! I actually have not been wearing my hair out that much lately. I’ve been on a protective style challenge for the last 5 months. I just recently began to wear my hair out again for the holidays and sometimes on the weekends. But, I will continue protective style with wigs. My go to style as of late has been a twist and curl when my hair is out. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Because I am in protective style mode, it is very basic.. I take down the two flat twists I did in the front the night before, give my wig a good shake and proceed to blend lol Protective styling has made my life pretty easy and my units have become my best friends (: 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I simply remove my unit, spray a mix of water and aloe vera juice on my hair that will be under the wig cap on a daily basis, and apply coconut oil. I try to really focus on my ends during this process. As far as my leave out goes, I spray the mix of water and aloe vera juice on my hair, apply coconut curling cream, along with olive oil eco styler gel, do a flat twist on each side, wrap my hair with a satin scarf and I’m ready for bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Using heat on my hair is very rare. I got my first professional flat iron last year on my birthday, which was in july and I have not used heat since then; until maybe december when I did a blow out.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Although, I have worn braids at the beginning of my journey, I typically wear Marley twists as a protective style, which I do myself. The only time I braid my hair is when I’m attempting to do a braid out or when I’m feeling lazy after washing my hair and decide to do two large braids to wear under my units. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I’d have to say wide tooth comb. Although I use a denman from time to time, I don’t use it often as it causes a great deal of friction, which can contribute to breakage.. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Definitely in a protective do. Although I love loose styles, I have a hair goal in mind, so I am doing what’s necessary to achieve that goal. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? OK. I’m actually a bit afraid to admit this. But, early in my journey I had a rather interesting experience with nail glue. As I stated earlier, I did a great deal of protective styling very early in my journey. When I say protective styling, I am referring to wearing braids and weaves. I actually never used to wear weave prior to my natural hair journey. Therefore, I was a novice to all the ins and outs of installing weave. Well, I was planning to do a u part wig, with a closure that would be glued on to my hair. I had gone to the beauty supply store to purchase hair and all the materials needed to begin this project. I asked the clerk for hair glue and I trusted that’s what I was given. So I got home and I was super excited about attempting this process. I had watched a really good tutorial on the install and felt liberated that I was going to be doing it for my first time. Thankfully, the hair glue was only intended for the closure area. Well, I completed the part and was in the process of doing the closure.. I felt really good about it until one of my friends, who had soon arrived for a rehearsal that we were having at my sisters house, entered the bathroom, picked up the bottle and said “Uummm Mary, do you realize you are putting nail glue in your hair??” I thought, Oh my Lord!! I panicked. I was so excited and also oblivious, that I didn't even read the bottle. I trusted that the clerk gave me what I needed.. After all.. I had never dealt with weave or any products related to having weave.. I felt like an idiot to say the least.. Our rehearsal turned into a session or everyone helping to figure out how to remove the nail glue out of my hair. That was the worst experience ever. I never did that again. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I believe that protective styling has been my saving grace. Almost 70% of my journey has included protective styling. I also try my best to make sure that my hair is well moisturized. I do believe that my hair could be much longer after 2 yrs and 8 months. Especially after observing the journey of other naturals.. But, I have to remind myself that everyone’s hair doesn't grow at the same pace. But, I believe diet and exercise would really benefit my hair more. I plan to include that a lot more in year 3. Also, patience and some good old TLC (tender love and care). 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kelly Goins and I live in Asheville, North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4a/4b with a sprinkling of a few unidentifiable strands lol!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My natural hair journey hasn’t taken a straight path. There have been starts, stops, and detours along the way. I first went natural in 2007. I hung in there for about a year and later texlaxed. I did my second big chop in December of 2011 and have been natural ever since. In the beginning, I wanted to go natural because I was tired of the relaxer regimen and shedding/thinning hair. After making a lifestyle change and adopting healthier habits, having natural hair aligns with my core values and overall wellness goals. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I thought the main challenge in going natural would be learning how to care for and style my hair. Recently, I’ve become more introspective and realized that the most challenging thing about going natural was the mindset shift I needed to facilitate to truly be content and love my kinks, coils, and curls as they are. I’ve worked to become confident in my natural beauty which has totally transformed my natural hair journey for the better. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I consider myself a natural hair minimalist. My weekly regimen is simple. Depending on my weekly goals it consists of co-washing or shampooing, conditioning, oil rinsing, and protectively styling. Typically I wear twistouts, updos, and recently I’ve mastered my wash-and-go so that’s been in more frequent rotation. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every morning I moisturize with a leave-in conditioner and seal with coconut or grapeseed oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night time regimen is the same as my morning regimen in addition to prepping my hair at night, usually pineappling a Twistout or smoothing my updo and covering my hair with a satin scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair no more than twice a year. Each year I flat iron my hair to celebrate my nappiversary and have fun with a few weeks of straight hair styles.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair fairly regularly for braidouts, too many times to count, but I rarely braid with extentions. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. Wide-tooth comb for detangling in the shower. Denman brush for detangling and styling wet hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Both. My styles mostly start in a protective-do and then end wearing my hair loose, like when I rock twists for a few weeks and then wear a twistout for a week or so. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yep. After giving birth to my son I experienced postpartum hair loss which affected my edges. Thank goodness my edges recovered and are almost back to normal. I believe they are in a good place because I kept my edges moisturized and practiced gentle styling, making sure that there was no tension on my edges and I refrained from ponytails and tight braids/twists. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is that healthy hair begins on the inside. You can use all the products in the world but nothing trumps eating wholesome foods and drinking water. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Sherri, The “Carolina Girl”. 2. What is your hair type? Mainly 4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My last relaxer was the night before my wedding, July 2010. For me, it wasn't a conscious attempt to “go natural” … I wanted to learn how to style hair without the aid of a professional. Also, I’d just completed a financial training course, and put myself on a strict budget… Through this, my love for DIY was born. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part – by far – is finding elegant styles that are appropriate for business environments. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don’t really have a weekly regimen… Meaning there isn't a list of things I do each week to maintain my curls. I’m more of an “as needed” kind of gal. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I typically spend 10-15 minutes taking down a twist out, a twist & curl, bantu knots, etc. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night is where the magic happens! Most nights (especially weeknights) I’ll lightly mist my hair with a water/oil mixture (section by section). Afterwards, I’ll proceed with flat twist, or bantu knots. Then I’ll wrap my head in an old t-shirt. Not sexy, but effective! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, some mornings my twist out or knots haven’t dried completely. In these situations I’ll sit under a hood dryer on low heat for 30 mins. I also use heated rollers whenever I’m going to a formal function, or whenever I strive for a fuller twist out.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, I braid my hair – not often. Maybe once or twice a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb, but mostly my fingers… 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose in the fall/winter (or low humidity days), protective styles, updos for rainy days and/or Summer. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No, not that I can remember 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Cleanse and Moisturize: I use a Baking Soda/Water mixture to cleanse my hair & Scalp along with an Apple Cider Vinegar/Water Mixture to keep my dandruff at bay!! I suffer from a dry scalp and itchy scalp. So keeping my scalp moisturized is a must! I use an oil mixture (olive, grape seed, almond, vitamin E, and jojoba). Any variation of these (nightly) works wonders for me! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Cannie and I’m from North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? I have a mix of 4a and 4b curls.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had been relaxed for the majority of my life and had long, healthy hair. I hadn’t had any terrible relaxer experiences and I wasn’t truly aware of a “natural movement” at the time. It was 2010 and I had a love/hate relationship with my relaxed hair. While it was long and thick, I didn’t enjoy dealing with it because I felt like my relaxers never “took,” like my hair was always “puffy” and hard to manage. I would get relaxers and it would be silky smooth for a week to 2 weeks, and then it was, what I tended to call it, “unruly.” So I resorted to wearing my hair in braids or kinky twist styles and I simply got tired of it. I wanted something new and fresh. I saw one of my cousin's “natural journey” photo albums on Facebook and was instantly inspired. I truly felt like it would be something I could enjoy, Instead of having angst about my hair, I could have a chance to embrace the kinks! So, I did a little research and took the plunge. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Transitioning was the most challenging for me. Because I was wearing so many braided styles, my relaxers were stretched out, so I had some natural new growth already when I decided to transition to natural. I only intentionally transitioned for around 4 months because the two textures were hard to maintain for washing and styling. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I keep my hair stretched during the week to decrease tangles and for easy styling. I moisturize and seal as needed. I alternate between co-washing and shampooing weekly depending on my hair needs. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? On a typical morning, I will take down the style I prepped for the night before. If I did not prep ahead of time, I will moisturize and style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually moisturize, seal and prep my hair for the style I’m going to wear the next day or reset a style I am already wearing by doing the “pineapple method” or re-twisting. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I typically blow out my hair once a year for a really good trim, but I don’t normally use heat for styling on my hair other than that. In the case that I’d like to get a really nice deep conditioning session, I will sit under a hooded dryer if it is necessary.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t normally braid my hair for styling. I enjoy twist outs because they are quick and easy and I love the overall look. I have done kinky twists and spring twists and that is usually a once a year occurrence. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I prefer to finger detangle first and follow up with a wide-tooth comb to decrease pulling and pressure on the hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It really depends on the time of the year. In the spring and fall, I enjoy having my hair loose. In the summer and winter I love a nice protective style. I love bun styles year round. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I guess I could say I’m in the midst of a hair tragedy now: I have a little bit of breakage and thinning in the back of my hair in the “upstairs kitchen” that I believe is due to wearing my hair up the majority of the time. While my bands are not extremely tight, I’m thinking that, it being constantly pulled up has put a strain on the hair in that area. After a nice trim, I’m “babying” that section and being sure to keep it moisture balanced and not putting any pressure there. Instead of using bands, I can use hair pins or small combs if I’d like to wear my hair up. I’m confident that the fullness will be restored! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be “keep to the basics.” Maintain a regular regimen for washing, deep conditioning and moisturizing your hair. Enjoy styling, but low manipulation can only help and regularly trim. There’s no use holding on to damaged ends; the problem will only worsen. Hair care basics get you healthy hair. 14.
