1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Dephne Madyara, I live in the UK and was born in Zimbabwe. 2. What is your hair type? I'm a type 4c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
After years of damage from relaxing and colouring my hair, it was beyond damaged and thin and the best thing to do was to cut it all off and start afresh because no amount of conditioning and treatments was going to rescue it from the effects of damage. So sometime in October 2012 I randomly cut it all off until I was left with about an inch of hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Learning how to care for and manage my hair was very challenging the first couple of years. Understanding what products to use, how to comb it without breaking it, what regimes worked, how often to wash and condition it. It's all been a bit of trial and error but I'm now at a point of contentment. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I'm currently on a water only regime for a couple of months and I was my hair every 2-3 days with water then braid it under the shower. I then oil my ends with natural organic oils, mainly coconut oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't really have one because of the regime I'm currently on. I simply wear out my hair in a braid out. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Depending if it's wash day I follow the weekly regime, otherwise I tie my hair up before bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes and the last time was about 5 months ago. I try to do no more than once every 2 months.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid it a lot, braid out are my go to hairstyle. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb, I tried the den an brush and it Bastille pulled out my hair. Perhaps because of my very kinky hair texture. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I wear lace wigs as protective styles in winter and wear out my hair in spring, summer and autumn. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes! About 2 years ago I African threaded my hair then washed it with the threading on, when I went onto remove the threading my hair was severely matted, like dread locs! I spent weeks undoing it and there was a lot of breakage in the process! It was really a tragedy but now I now what not to do! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture moisture moisture! Water is the best moisture for type 4 hair, just dampening your hair with it and sealing with oils and spraying water on your scalp goes a long way for retaining good hair health. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kathy a.k.a Urban Beauty Within (Youtuber). I'm from Michigan, USA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 3B & 3C (Curly Spirally and Curly Coily).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in January of 2013. Becoming natural wasn't something I thought I would ever do. The reason why I became natural is due to heat, bleach & dye damage. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The hard part of being natural was that my peers didn’t fully understand why I chose to go natural. At the end of the day it’s my hair and my life, so forget what others think lol! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash my hair once every week for 4 weeks. After the fourth co-wash I wash my hair, condition & deep condition. After I wash my hair I always do the LOC method and braid up my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I usually go to sleep with my hair braided or twisted up. In the morning before work I just undo the braids or curls and wear my hair in a nice curly hairdo. Sometimes I wear a high curly ponytail on some days. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually braid or twist my hair in the evening. My hair is moisturized by doing the LOC Method. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I only use heat/straighten my hair 3 to 4 times a year. Sometimes less than that.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair a whole lot! My hair comes out very well with braid-outs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both. Wide tooth comb is good for teasing your roots to create a bigger fro. Denman Brush is good to detangle your hair to make sure your curls have no snags. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is usually loose but I do like flat twist up-dos for my protective hairstyles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? At one point in my life I used to get my hair professionally done by hairstylists. My husband, who was my boyfriend at that time, encouraged me to try doing my own hair instead of dishing out a lot of money every 2 weeks. I listened and began caring for my own hair. I was still straightening but without using relaxers. I then wanted to dye my hair blonde. My previous hair stylist refused to dye my hair blonde. When my mind is set to do something I do it. I bleached & dyed my own hair to blonde. A part of me still regrets doing that to this day. But the other half of me is happy about making this mistake because this is what led to my natural hair journey. My hair was no longer healthy and felt like hay. I was sick of trying out a lot of money every 2 weeks. I listened and began caring for my own hair. I was still straightening but without using relaxers. I then wanted to dye my hair blonde. My previous hair stylist refused to dye my hair blWhen my mind is set to do something I do it. I bleached & dyed my own hair to blonde. A part of me still regrets doing that to this day. But the other half of me is happy about making this mistake because this is what led to my natural hair journey. My hair was no longer healthy and felt like hay. I was sick of trying to live with my super damaged hair. I had a friend that was natural and asked her if I should go ahead and cut off all my hair. She agreed with me, so 20 minutes later I did the big chop. I was happy about cutting off my damaged hair but insecure about having short hair for the first time. Because of my insecurities I bought some lace wigs and even created my own. But eventually I became comfortable enough to wear my short hair out in public. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Drink plenty of water, Co-wash weekly, use products made for natural hair care. I also suggest doing the LOC Method, that has deffinately saved me! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello Beauties!! My name is Rosemary and I am from London with Nigerian background. 2. What is your hair type? I have beautiful 4C/4B hair.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in April 2014. I transitioned for about a year. I had enough of the two textures and really wanted to experience being natural. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? To me it was so different. I had never handled my natural hair myself before so it was so new to me. I think I was most self conscious about how short and different it was at the initial stages. Now I know that it is the best decision I have ever made for my hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I am actually experimenting with the “water only” regimen. This means that instead of using commercial products, you just use water and oils. It has been about 3 months, I am loving it so far and I think it may be a keeper. The problem I had with products is that they gave me an itchy scalp – my scalp is sensitive so it is working for me. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends really. Lately I have been having my hair in mini twists so in the morning before work I will just style them. I pretty much put my hair into a style and go when my hair is loose. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I feel that to save time a good night time routine is key. Even if it means refreshing with water before retwisting/rebraiding to maintain the stretch. This is pretty much what I do. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use indirect heat from my hooded dryer for a style like Curlformers.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Whenever I feel like it I will do mini twists with my natural hair. I am not really a fan of extensions and such, I know my scalp will not like it and I prefer doing things with my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I finger detangle only now but if I had to chose I would say wide tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? A bit of both. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Back in 2010 when I allowed a ‘friend’ at the time to overprocess my hair with relaxer. I transitioned to texturised hair and definitely learnt never to let anyone do my hair again. I started doing my hair myself and what I learnt is that I am the only one who really knows what I want for my hair and who truly cares about its health! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I have a few: Keep it simple! All the product junkie business it really not worth it. Choose products that your hair likes and stick with them. Also, be gentle with your hair, love it and it will love you back. Lastly, embrace the beautiful kinks that God blessed you with. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
You can call me Elle, and I am a military brat so I've lived a little bit of everywhere but I grew up mostly in the DMV (California, USA). 2. What is your hair type? I have quite a few hair types actually. The back of my head is majority 4a, the areas in the middle are heat damaged (that's a hair type right? lol) and toward the front is 3c/4a as well.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went "natural" technically without even knowing it. I had relaxers a couple of times in high school but never maintained them and just let them grow out. I consciously made a decision to alter how I styled my hair in 2010. For me, the DC summers were HORRENDOUS for straight hair so I decided to eliminate heat and see what would happen. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was learning how to style my hair without the use of heat. When I finally did discover flat irons I was so heat dependent. That was really all I knew and was the one thing I could do very well. So learning how to use rollers, and perm rods was something very new to me. In the very beginning I looked a hot mess, lol. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash, deep condition and style my hair on a weekly basis. I used to stretch my hair for two weeks at a time but I found that washing weekly is much better for my hair . 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on what style I have I will usually spritz my hair lightly with water in the morning and go about my day. If I've smashed any of my curls over night I will use a small amount of product on the end to reshape my curls. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? As soon as I get home I pineapple my curls with a silk scarf! Simple and easy! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I definitely use heat on my hair but only when I am getting my hair trimmed. Unfortunately, I trust no one to cut my hair in it's curly state. And sometimes I just get an itch to wear my hair straight and let it blow in the wind lol.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I rarely have my hair in braided styles. My hair is already so long that adding more hair on top of that is a little crazy for me. I did have marley twists in 2014 and I LOVED them! 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman brush alll the way! I only use a wide tooth comb for parting. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I normally wear my hair out, my go-to style are two strand twists with the ends finger coiled. I tried to do more protective styling but its just not in my cards lol. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? OHHHH YESS! Tragedy that was done by me lol. I didn't flat iron or blow dry my hair for two years and in that time my hair grew from shoulder length to mid back length. That first time I straightened my hair after those two years I was addicted. I got so many compliments that I fell in love again with my straight hair and fried it like to no other. I had SEVERE heat damage that 2 years later I am still recovering from. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? The secret to it all is..................... Learn your hair! I know that sounds crazy but the only way you can do anything for your hair if if you know it. Inside and out! When I finally learned how to care for my hair it did things I never thought it could do before. I stopped relying on what other people did and just did my own thing. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Chiaka and I am from Hertfordshire, United Kingdom 2. What is your hair type? I am a 4a hair type
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to go natural after being fed up of my monthly hair regimen (relaxing, cornrowing then sewing a weave in). When I took out my hair I noticed the front of my hair was a lot shorter, thinner and damaged than the back of my hair due to relaxers. I then knew that relaxers were hindering my hair from reaching its full potential. I also began to realise that natural hair was very versatile and stopping relaxers wouldn't limit my ability to style. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Overcoming dryness was my biggest challenge as I had to go through several products to find out what my hair is receptive to. 5. What is your weekly regimen? On a Friday I pre-treat my hair with coconut oil then I shampoo my hair with ORS Creamy Aloe shampoo to remove all the product build up that accumulated throughout the week. Then I detangle and deep condition my hair with Mane and Tail deep moisturising conditioner and Cantu Deep Repair mask and put on my self heating cap for roughly 1 hour or more. After rinsing I add my shea butter and oil mix which gives me deep moisturisation and extra softness. After that I will either do a braid out, thread my hair, blow dry it or leave it in its natural curls. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I like to squeeze in an extra 10 minutes of sleep so I always set my hair the night before. 9 times out of 10 I wear a bun so all I have to do in the mornings is add some gel to the places that may have got a bit frizzy 7. What is your daily night time regimen? As soon as I come home I take my hair out of my bun and get a family member to give me a scalp massage for about 10 minutes, 15 minutes if I am lucky! Then right before bed I moisturise my hair with water and my shea butter mix then slick my hair into a bun 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I only use heat when I blow dry my hair which is 2 times a month
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have not braided my hair since last year. But it is next on my list as I believe braids has really been of great benefit to my natural hair 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a Denman Brush, it makes my detangling process a dream. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally in a protective-do most of the time but if I am not going out at the weekend I normally like to give my scalp some air and leave my hair out or braid my hair into 4 big plaits on either side of my head 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have not had many, but I have had a braid out that was still wet after a day of drying which was extremely frustrating! But I went to plan B which is always a beautiful, big hair puff 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? WATER, WATER, WATER! Think of your hair as a plant and water it where you can because water = moisture. I normally spray my hair with my oil infused spray bottle and then add my sealant. Also washing hair regularly is crucial as a clean scalp promotes healthy hair growth 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Charity and I am from the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is completely 4c, no mix of anything else.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped on Oct. 28th, 2008. I had been transitioning since March of 2008. I started the transition because my hair quit taking relaxers after became pregnant with my first child. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I wish I could answer that with just one issue, but there were several for me. I honestly was disappointed at my texture when I first went natural. Also, my hair was always extremely dry and very short. So embracing all of that was quite overwhelming. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I do a shortened, modified version of the max hydration method. Which involves a rhassoul clay rinse, deep conditioning or steaming with my Heutiful steamer, then sealing my hair. I currently wear a lot of buns because it's quick and easy. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Typically it involves me lightly spritzing with water, smoothing with a little oil or shea butter mix, then setting it into a bun. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Either I will dampen my hair lightly with water and do the Green House Effect over night. Or I will put my hair into 6-8 large chunky twists with rollers on the ends to keep my hair stretched. Afterwards, I put on some type of satin scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Every now and then, I may use a flat iron on low temps; 300 degrees or less. I occasionally use a blowdryer on a warm setting to stretch my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair occasionally for a braid out. Which may be once every couple of months or so. I used to cornrow my hair a whole lot. However, the longer my hair gets, the more I steer away from braids because of tangles. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I do have a wide tooth seamless comb that I like to occasionally use. I use this every now and then to double-check my finger detangling. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally in a protective style. I wear a LOT of buns. I do like to roller sets to though from time to time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had at least 3 or 4. Each pretty much ended with a big chop or major cut. The most detrimental was one I experienced heat damage, color damage, and dryness breakage all at the same time. I had to big chop again, that was back in 2011. I recovered by beginning a protective style journey and I have tried to maintain it to some degree ever since then. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keeping your hair well hydrated. Poor hydration is usually the biggest contributor to fairy knots, breakage, poor length retention, tangles, premature wear, etc. Most of the issues I've faced with my hair could have been avoided had my hair been consistently and properly hydrated. 14. My name is Sadora Paris and I am from New York City! My ethnicity is Caribbean and Middle Eastern. 2. What is your hair type? 4A with some 4B strands lingering in some places :)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have been natural since 2006. However I permed my hair again in 2011. Then I returned to my natural strands in 2012 and have had two big chops since then :) 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was how to style and care for my hair once it started growing longer. 5. What is your weekly regimen? It's very simple actually. I deep condition weekly and moisturize as needed. Simplicity is best. However, what I've noticed is my hair loves to be saturated in moisture so Im very generous now when it comes to my leave in's and moisturizers. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If my hair is slightly dry, I'd spritz it with a little water mixed with some Jane Carter cream. Other than that, I would shape my hair into place with my hands. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I don't really have one nor would I need one at this point because I'm currently sporting a TWA. I do however sleep on a satin pillow bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Rarely... Only when I'm filming a YouTube tutorial and the style requires it.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Rarely 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide -tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, I have lol. When I permed my hair again back in 2011, I died it blonde right after. My hair was soooo fried and breaking all over the place. So I let it grow out a bit, then cut that thang right off and I was back to being natural again. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture, Moisture, Moisture! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Tiana Isaacs and I am from Virginia Beach, Virginia. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is between a 4a and 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My story is quite interesting because I cut my hair off completely in Dec 2010 before I even knew what it meant to be natural. I had long hair all of my life and I felt like sometimes people cared more about my hair than me. So I cut it all off. Little did I know that it would be just the beginning of my natural hair journey. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The hardest thing for me was not comparing my hair to other naturals. I think with all the buzz surrounding youtube and having information at our fingertips we take the fun out of our journey wishing for someone else's texture. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I just recently changed it. If I have a lot of product build up I do an apple cinder vinegar rinse. After that I wash my hair with J'Shae peppermint shampoo. I am between conditioners right now so I am just using Shea Moisture's Curl and Shine conditioner. I add J'shea oil before detangling, followed by twisting with Itsyourshairco twist and curl cream. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I take my bonnet off and fluff the areas that need it and then I add some J'shea oil for some shine. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? This one is a little harder, I don't really do anything with my hair at night except put my bonnet on, however I do re-twist every three days. That is of course my curls are giving me life..lol 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Outside of blow drying on cool for a more stretched look I recently had my hair straightened for the first time since my big chop. I do not think it is something I will do often. Possibly once a year. My hair reverted wonderfully. Thanks to my professional stylist.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I get Marleys twist at least twice a year. I have not had my hair braided (i.e. box braids) in forever. I feel like Marley twists do not cause as much tension on hair as braids do. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I have to say I love my wide tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? A little bit of both... I have been on a journey to retain length so I have been rocking wigs a lot. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes I have and it's bringing me to tears just thinking about it. I was taking my Marley twists out and for some reason I thought I could wash my hair without detangling it first. Immediately after washing my hair I knew I had done something wrong. It took almost two hours and two handfuls of hair to see the error of my ways. There was no simple come back from that, a ton of deep conditioning and treatments to strengthen my hair that skipping the detangling had caused. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My tip is simple, your hair is most fragile in its natural state. If you want to retain length I say leave your hair alone protective styles will be your best friend and you hair will thank you for it. As far as healthy hair, listen to your hair and the products it takes well too and when you find something that works STICK with it. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Alicia and I am from Southern Georgia. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is predominantly 4b. I have always been confused as to what exactly my hair type is, but I believe it is mostly 4b with a little 4a.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I transitioned for almost 11 months before I big chopped on December 8, 2012. So I have been natural for 2 years now. Yay! Whew. Because my hair wasn't healthy like it used to be when I was younger and because of my research on the chemicals (relaxers) I was putting on my hair, I thought that going down the natural route would be good for me. I remember when I first moved to Georgia and how the girls in my class were pretty much jealous of how thick and long my hair was. On one horrible evening, my cousin put a relaxer in my hair. I think it was a bad relaxer because my hair immediately started to break off really bad. That night, we went to the salon and the beautician cut off a lot of my hair in all types of layers. I remember going back to school and everyone wondering what happened to my hair and why I cut it. Anyway, it seemed that from that point forward, my hair was never the same. I also was curious to see what my natural hair looked like. My cousin had gone natural and encouraged me to do the same. I just wanted to embrace the hair that I was born with. There's so much versatility that comes with natural hair. I can wear it curly or straight (without putting harmful chemicals on my hair). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The mostly challenging thing about going natural would be transitioning. Dealing with two different hair textures was tough! But there is a solution: protective hairstyling. :) 5. What is your weekly regimen? I recently created a weekly/monthly hair regimen. Monday-Wednesday I oil my scalp with JBCO and moisturize my hair (focusing on my ends). On Thursday I co-wash and oil my scalp and of course moisturizing the hair comes after washing. And again, on Fridays and Saturdays I oil my scalp and moisturize my hair. Sundays consist of deep conditioning my hair and oiling my scalp. Also, every other week (on Thursday) I shampoo and use a hair mask. Sometimes I switch up the days but I've been pretty consistent since creating this regimen. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't really have a morning regimen. Sometimes I keep twists pinned up in my hair, so the most that I would do is spray a leave-in conditioner on my hair; or in the case that I want to take out my twists/braids, I will apply oil on my fingers and hair to give my hair a nice shine. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Referring back to my weekly regimen, I oil my scalp and moisturize my hair (ends) at night , as well as massage my scalp a bit. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Rarely. I haven't directly blow-dried or flat-ironed my hair in a year. I do plan to use heat on my hair soon.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Well, unfortunately I do not know how to cornrow, but I can do plaits. I don't do that too often. I would say maybe 7 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I prefer the Denman brush, but I use both. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose, but I need to do more protective-dos. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I've had a couple. On question three I mentioned my relaxed hair tragedy. As far as natural hair, I encountered some heat damage. I did a protein treatment and little by little trimmed the heat damaged ends. There's still a tiny bit left, but I'll cut that off when I do my next trim. I'm not sure if this would be considered a tragedy but like most naturals I struggle with single-strand knots and split ends, and it's really hindering my hair journey and goals. I recently discovered a small bald spot around my crown area. That was pretty disturbing. That is what prompted me to oil my scalp daily in my hair regimen. I also plan to do a protein treatment and put in some Senegalese twists or some braids to give my hair a break. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keep the moisture in. I look at it like this: water is one of the number one moisturizers. We use it on our skin, hair, and it revitalizes our organs when we drink it. Moisture allows things to thrive. A plant will not thrive if it does not receive water (moisture). Therefore, your hair will not thrive if it does not receive an adequate and consistent amount of moisture. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
