1. What's your name and where are you from?
I’m Colleen and I’m from Jamaica, Queens baby! 2. What is your hair type? I am mainly a kinky-coily low porosity type 4b hair type at the crown and edges and an S-curl type 4a around the perimeter.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Chime aka HairCrush was my biggest hairspiration and curiosity. Her hair was amazingness and I kinda hoped mine looked the same. It was TOTALLY different but cool nonetheless plus, I really wanted to see what my texture looked like. I first attempted to transition in 2010 and made it 11 months then relaxed because I couldn’t take it any longer. In 2011, I tried again and ended up doing the big chop 6 months post. I haven’t looked back since. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Working with my hair texture was difficult while it was short. I felt so self-conscious, I wore hats for almost a year. And because I was low porosity, trying things other naturals were doing just didn’t work. When I gained length is when I finally started enjoying the process more. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I’m mainly a roller set/straight/stretched natural so during that time, I wash my hair every two weeks. I wash twice for really clean debris free hair, deep condition ALWAYS, add leave in and roller set. Then I’ll either leave the set, flat iron or bun it up. On my kinky days (wink), I wash every week. I wash and deep condition, add leave in and style. I usually style with grease. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I absolutely have none. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I absolutely have none. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? All the time. I’m not afraid of heat because I know how to properly use heat in a way to flourish my hair. It’s sad that some naturals get burned (pun intended) and shun heat. For my 4b hair, it’s the easiest way to retain length.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t very often because I have weak edges but I’d like to start crochet braiding for a hair break. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? A Denman Brush. I can’t roller set or achieve maximum definition without it. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? As a mom, my hair is just all over the place! It’ll be in a messy bun, a loose pony, haphazard French braids, under a hat. I do whatever I can do to prevent my son from literally snatching my edges. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh yes. A year natural, I had a big event I wanted to look “polished” for so I went to the Dominican salon to get a blow out. My hair was pressed to the gawds but oh my goodness, my hair smelled so burnt! When it came time to wash out the press, the smell intensified, my curls would not revert and my hair even switched colors. It was a sad, sad time in my journey. I should’ve known better too because when I walked in the salon with my hair in a frizzy puff, all the stylists were like “you do her”, “no, I’m busy, Maggie, you gonna take her?” I felt so ashamed. Like I had a problem head and no one wanted to touch it. Ugh, never again. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Marcian and I am from Jamaica but currently in Florida. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type sits between 4a and 3c with super coily texture and normal porosity.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
May 2014 I big chopped because I wanted to start a healthy hair journey, to do this I knew I had to stop using chemical relaxers in my hair and embrace my natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part of my hair journey was waiting for my hair to grow back after my big chop; I had to learn a lot of patience. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My washday is fairly simple, I wash with shampoo making sure I concentrate on my scalp and I follow up with a deep conditioner, which sits on my hair for 20 to 30 mins. After my deep condition treatment I do the LOC Method (Leave in conditioner+oil+cream). Then I stretch my hair either with the banding method or large braids. When my hair is stretch I then do a protective style. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends on the style I am rocking, if my hair is in two strand twist I mist them with water/oil mix to refresh and wake then up. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night regimen: I really focus on protecting my hair and preserving my hairstyle by using all things satin, Scarf, Bonnet and pillow on my hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No, I am happy that my hair care regimen excludes using heat.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I don’t do extension braiding. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both wide-tooth combs and a Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is mostly in a protective style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I would not say I had a hair tragedy but as my hair got longer I really struggled with detangling but I am getting better. I now make sure my hair is super saturated with conditioner before I do any detangling and that has helped tremendously. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I must say that I retain my hair length by keeping my scalp clean, deep condition regularly and doing the LOC Method religiously. Keeping my hair in protective style helps a lot with length retention and a lot of TCL and patience. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Shannon. I am from Jamaica, but I reside in Georgia, USA. 2. What is your hair type? The front of my hair is 4a, and the back is 4b/4c. Overall my hair is type H (Healthy).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I don't quite remember when I decided to go natural because I was very young (maybe 10) but I decided to start my healthy hair journey in Summer 2011 because my hair was extremely heat damaged. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural and my healthy hair journey as a whole was learning to deal with my hair as it grew and the textures changed. 5. What is your weekly regimen? If my hair is out (in a "wash & go") I wash weekly and moisturize at least 3-4 times a week. If it's in a protective style I moisturize weekly or as needed. Usually cleanse every other week, but if my hair is dry or itchy I'll wash. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Each morning I remove my satin bonnet, shake and fluff, then style my hair. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Each night I assess my hair for dryness, itchy scalp, etc. and tend to it as needed and then put on a satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Practically not at all. If I'm in a rush I might sit under a hooded dryer while deep conditioning. I did have a sew-in with leave out at the top in January 2015, but I haven't flat-ironed my entire head since March 2014.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do my signature twists (big or medium) anywhere from 2 to 4 times a year. The video to my process is below:
s10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?
Wide-tooth comb, but I'm considering trying out the Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I would say about 50/50. Mostly protective styles during the summer and loose mostly during the fall. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I was younger my aunt cut almost 1/3 of my length (thinking I had extensions in my braids) and I suffered extreme heat damage during my early teens. For the length, I couldn't really do much, but for the heat damage I started to moisturize, deep condition and use protein treatments as well as protective styles more. I stopped using heat as much and eventually not at all. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisturize and use protective styles. Do everything in moderation. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Melissa Small, a Jamaican born natural hair enthusiast who now resides in Queens New York. 2. What is your hair type? Hair type is 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
On June 10, 2015 I was one year completely natural. I started transitioning May 21, 2014 because of my love for big healthy hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me would be the whole transitioning process. Dealing with 2 completely different hair textures was a lot of work. But the end result is all worth it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen would definitely be to deep condition weekly. My 4C hair needs a lot of moisture and this does it for me. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Daily morning regimen varies depending on the style I'm wearing I wear a lot of protective styles so I just get up and go. When my hair is in twist for plaits definitely a little coconut oil and separate and use my good ole pick! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If my hair is already styled in a twist out I do the pineapple method and put on my satin cap. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I use heat when I weekly deep conditions, I sit under a hooded dryer. I did blow out my hair after one year of being natural but that's about it. I've never flat ironed or anything like that. At least not yet.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I love some box braid long and short. I do this quite often about 3-4 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both!! Wide tooth comb mostly in the shower or when I wash my hair and denman brush while twisting or plaiting to make sure all the knots are out. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Half and half I do both. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes when I first big chopped I was uncomfortable with the length of my hair so I immediately installed a weave and flat ironed my leave out. Bad idea!! Heat damage!! I'm still recovering slowly by clipping off those damage ends. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip I would say is deep conditioning often. Find a regimen that works for you and stick to it. This can make your 4C hair so manageable. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hey y’all. I am Monique aka IrieDiva from Kingston, Jamaica. 2. What is your hair type? I am a 3c I believe.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in February 2012. I’ve always wanted to do it but having a daughter made me finally chop it all off as I wanted her to look to me for hair and beauty inspiration, not the TV or magazines. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I can’t think of any challenges, I really have always wanted to do it and knew it would happen one day. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition every week using my homemade concoction and use ACV to clarify after. Then I apply leave-in conditioner, a styler and seal with a shea butter and olive oil mix. I may do flat-twists or may allow it to air dry depending on my mood. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I spritz with water if necessary and fluff. If the style has gotten old then I throw it up in a puff or butterfly clip and I’m done. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Cover with my satin bonnet. I have great intentions of twisting at night but I can’t seem to kick the lazies. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Currently, about twice per year. The heat in Jamaica does not allow for much more and I exercise regularly so the sweat would be an issue.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have braided my hair quite a few times over the past year since the style has become popular again, however because of the fineness of my hair it never lasts very long unfortunately. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It is loose 98.9% of the time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have done a lot of things to my hair over the past couple years of being natural, dyed it fire engine red, blue, pink purple, bleached it myself, used food colouring as a dye, you name it I’ve done it. I had to big chop again in December 2012 to get rid of some of the fried ends after all that colouring. I call none of it a travesty though, I just love to have fun. It grows back. I’m trying to go easy on the colour now in favour of growing it out, but I do have the itch. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I find that as long as I am consistent with my deep conditioning every week, my hair is happy. I wear it loose a lot which is frowned upon when trying to retain length but I like to enjoy my hair, if it grows a little slower, so be it. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Rochelle Graham. I was born in Jamaica. 2. What is your hair type? 4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
In 2008, I was inspired by my mother who was natural and decided I wanted to see how my hair would turn out. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? At that time it was difficult to find resources and products that helped to keep my hair healthy. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Wash once a week with Black Soap Shampoo then deep condition weekly with Honey and Sage deep conditioner. I use the LOC method with Lemongrass Leave-in Conditioner, Shine Crave Hair Glosser, and Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer (I do this on wash day). Once a month I do a hot oil treatment with The Blended Therapy Hot Oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Undo my pineapple hairstyle, spray on Lemongrass Leave in Conditioner then I apply Shine Crave. If my scalp is very dry I'll use the Essential 17 and give myself a scalp massage. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I give myself a scalp massage every night with my Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil depending on my style. I may or may not re-twist my hair; if I do, I use the Pomegranate Passion Hair Elixir. Alternatively, I'll just put my hair in a pineapple. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I blow dry about once a week.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, maybe once a year with extensions. I'm more of a "twist-out" kind of girl. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide-tooth seamless comb in the shower. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally I wear it loose. I'll style my hair in twist-outs, braid-outs, or just a big open hair style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh gosh, yes, tons! I've had extreme color damage. I recoverd from it by simply doing a "big chop" and making sure I learned from my mistakes. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture, moisture, moisture! Sealing in moisture is very important when growing out long healthy hair. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi my name is Teshna. I am originally from the beautiful island of Jamaica but I’m currently living in London, UK. 2. What is your hair type? I would say my hair type is 3c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have been natural most of my life until I relaxed my hair when I was 17. I remember my high school prom when I was 16. My mother and I had no idea what to do with my hair. I had a few hours left until my prom so we went to the local shop and bought a really cheap hair gel. I soaked my hair with water and applied the gel all over. It was then I discovered what a wash and Go was. I started rocking my curly 'fro really often. I loved my hair in that state so much I decided to get a curly perm. Long story cut short, it all went downhill from there. I experienced lots of breakage, dry brittle hair and the frequent visits to the salon to re-do my roots etc. The worst of it all was the awful smell of the chemical being applied to my scalp. In some ways I felt trapped, I missed my natural texture and I had enough after 4 years. On February 9th 2012 I decided to start fresh and shave all my hair off. That was the most liberating experience ever! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I would say the most challenging thing was building up the courage to do the big chop. I always knew I wanted to start from scratch and shave all my hair off. But my mind kept saying what if you have a big alien head or your forehead is really huge. I guess stepping out of my comfort zone and overcoming fears was my biggest challenge. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly hair regimen is washing and deep conditioning my hair once a week. I sometimes Co-wash during the week depending on my weekly activities. I also have a protein treatment and I clarify my hair once a month. I tend to moisture daily or every other day. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I tend not to do a lot with my hair except to style it. 90% of the time I prepare my hair the night before. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? For my night regimen I use the LOC method (Liquid, Oil moisture) to moisture my hair. I braid my hair up at night. I apply my conditioner mix, coconut oil and hair butter then I braid my hair and tie it up with a silk scarf. In the morning my hair feels soft, fluffy and well moisturised. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat very rarely.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I braid my hair once or twice a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I prefer to use a wide tooth comb for regular everyday use. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? During the week it is mostly protected because I work in a corporate environment. I mostly rock a bun, up do or flat twists. During the weekend I let my hair down literally, lol. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have not had any hair experience I would call a tragedy. The closest I ever came to a tragedy was recently when I installed a weave for weeks. The thread was too tight and caused noticeable blisters all over my scalp which took some time to heal. I just applied oil all over and let it heal naturally. I had to wait a while before I could wear styles that had a parting again. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to keep things simple, get to know your hair by experimenting and researching. When you find out what works for you, be consistent with your hair regimen and remember to moisturise your hair! Patience goes a long way. Healthy long hair does not happen overnight! 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Daliah Ferguson. I was born in Jamaica. I came to America at a young age and I have been raised in Connecticut ever since. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a mixture of 4a and 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I began my transition 2011 after an appointment with my dermatologist. My scalp was inflamed, and my crown was thinning, too young for that, I thought to myself. Apparently I had an infection on my scalp that was causing the inflammation and the thinning. My dermatologist, a Caucasian male, encouraged me to have as natural of a hair care regimen as possible that meant no chemicals. He stated that a lot of African American women experience different types of Alopecia from years of relaxers. In addition to this my 11 year old daughter, now 14 years old, was relaxed and she decided that she was tired of being relaxed and experiencing the chemical burn, hair breakage, and monthly relaxer maintenance. She showed me a picture of a natural with full luscious hair, and she decided that, that was what she wanted for herself. At such a young age she inspired me to start my transition back to natural. My last relaxer was May of 2011. I transitioned from May 2011 to March 2012. After an unsightly incident during a styling session with a hair dresser (heat damage) I decided to totally cut all the relaxed ends off. I cut on March 30, 2012, returned to natural and I never looked back. This was one of the best decisions that I could have made so far. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was finding what products to use in my hair and learning what my hair type needed. I had to learn what products gave definition to my twist outs, made my hair have hold, and how to moisturize my hair properly to retain my growth and prevent breakage. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consists of pre-poo, shampoo, deep conditioning with my steamer LOC method, and styling. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning routine depends on the style I choose for the week. If I am rocking a twist out, I wear a satin bonnet at night and I will use coconut oil, or avocado oil on my hands to fluff and my afro pick to left. If my hair need moisture I will lightly spay a moisturizing spray and then refresh. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Nightly I wear a satin bonnet or silk scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do not use heat on my hair because I have experience heat damage in the past and my hair did not bounce back. The only heat used is under a hooded dryer.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair (single braids, or box braids). It is the best protective style for me and I am able to do different style with it and moisturize my scalp as needed. I braid my hair during the colder months between November and February. each time I have my braids in it is no more than 6-8 weeks. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both wide tooth and Denman brushes. Wide tooth for detangling before washing and Denman while applying my conditioner and styling. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I currently have a tapered cut so I wear my hair out loose. I love loose hair! 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have experience a hair tragedy before with a bad trim/cut/butchering. Unfortunately this was in the prime of my hair growth and hair health. I started to go back to the salon and I was getting some great styles. I trusted her enough to ask her for a trim. Apparently she had never trimmed natural hair before. When I took my hair down it was uneven in all sections and she cut a good 2-3 inches all around. I'm still not over it, but I have since moved on. I now get my hair cut or trimmed when I travel to Atlanta, or close by in New York. I ask about credentials and I'm very cautious about who I let touch my hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair is to develop a simple regimen. The key things are to pre-poo, cleanse, deep condition, and moisturize. Water is your best friend and above all you have to eat healthily and work out, they go hand in hand. Learn and love your hair type. Patience is key; if you love it, it will grow. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
