1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Joan Miano and I’m from Nairobi, Kenya. 2. What is your hair type? I have type 4 hair (4a in the front, 4b in the middle and 4c at the back)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural January 25th 2014. I actually didn’t plan on going natural but I really wanted to see how my hair looked like in its natural state and now I’m here, 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Most challenging thing was finding affordable products that were made for natural hair. Took me about 6 months to a year to find products that work for my hair and a regimen to go with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? It is more of every two weeks. I cleanse, condition and deep condition my hair. Follow that up with the LCO/LOC method as I install a protective style, e.g.; flat twists or twists. Second week I rock the twist out for 2-3 days then wash my hair on Sunday. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every other morning, I spritz my hair with a mixture of water & eucalyptus oil. Followed by a bit of coconut oil on my ends. I love me some coconut oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Every other night, I just massage some castor oil onto my scalp, tie my silk/satin scarf and go to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have fear heat damage, so only once a year during my hair anniversary.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I stopped braiding as school decided to take over my life. But when I do, I braid twice a year. And it’s usually box braids or Senegalese twists. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb all day, every day. But I wouldn’t mind trying out the Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly a protective do. My hair has a mind of its own and the less my hair is out, the better for the both of us. But when all else fails, the turban comes to the rescue. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Fairy knots, fairy knots, do I need to say more. Late 2015, I noticed my hair had more single knots than usually and it was due to the extreme heat that was only beginning. So, I gave myself a fresh trim, removed about half an in inch all round and started wearing protective styles to protect my ends. And so far, so good. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to listen and know your hair. Each single one of us has different hair; no two strands are the same. So, take the tips and advice given and makethemwork for your hair. I have frizzy, high porosity hair, so I learnt to touch my hair only when needed and not to overdo it with moisturizing. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Isimeme Edeko; I'm from Bellwood, Illinois 2. What is your hair type? 3C (front)/ 4A (middle & back)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Been natural all my life, but I began my 1st attempt at a healthy hair journey my freshman year of college (2013). My college roommate was natural and very big on maintaining her hair/ keeping it healthy so, one day I just realized I’d never truly seen my hair in its natural state. Whenever I’d wash it or get it done, it’d be put into braids or flat ironed. I was interested in seeing what it would be like to truly take care of my hair the right way as well as discover my curl pattern. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural is finding the right products for YOUR hair and trying to overcome natural hair setbacks/ obstacles because you’re bond to run into a few during your journey, especially if it’s all new to you. Going natural is definitely a “self-taught” skill so, through trial and error, you’ll learn what’s best for you. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Tuesday = Hot Oil Treatment with JBCO/ Pre-poo with coconut oil Wednesday = Deep Condition, Co-Wash, and Style Thursday = 1st Day Hair Friday = 2nd Day Hair Saturday = 3rd Day Hair/ Refresh Style Sunday = 4th Day Hair Monday = 5th Day Hair (style is old so I’ll do a high puff most likely) Tuesday = REPEAT 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Remove silk bonnet, spritz hair with a little water, fluff with hands into my desired shape, and pick roots for volume. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Split hair into 5 parts and wrap an ouch less ponytail holder around each section then put on bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, about 3-4x a year
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, I do Marley Twists on myself about twice a year. I also do cornrows on myself as a protective style frequently too (about 5-8xs a year). 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both, but if I had to choose it’d be Denman brush! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose, but I’m working on growing my hair out more so, I’ll probably be doing a lot more protective styles this year. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Before I went natural, I was unaware of how much heat damage I had. I used to flatiron my hair every other day basically; so after trying to figure out different ways to disguise it, I just decided to mini big chop myself that Summer (2014) after school let out. As of recently, my latest hair tragedy has been color damage in the front right side of my head, but my protein treatments and consistent hair regimen is helping that. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Develop a hair regimen and stick to it! Deep Condition weekly, always make sure your hair is moisturized when it’s starting to look brittle and dry, and TRIM WHEN NECCESSARY. I suggest learning to trim yourself because sometimes hair stylists take off more than we desire so, take things into your own hands; you know your hair more than anyone. Also, for me personally, my weekly JBCO treatments have grown my hair immensely so maybe trying that might help with growth. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Angie and I currently live in the fabulous New York City. 2. What is your hair type? I would say it’s a mixture of 3B and 3C. I love having the two different textures because one is very defined and the other provides volume.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped all of my hair on May 30th, 2015 although I originally played with the idea back in 2010 and tried to transition but gave up after 8 months. I decided to go natural and big chop because my hair was long, yet damaged to the point of no return and I felt like I needed a fresh start. Not only that, but I also wanted to be more in touch with my true self and wanted to love myself more. I felt like going natural was a good place to start on that journey. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was acceptance. I grew up with the deep rooted mentality that I had “bad hair” and that it needed to be pin straight in order to look pretty or for me to be accepted by society. It took years and years to finally arrive at the realization that I shouldn’t deny who I am in order to fit in anywhere. All things considered, I'm not upset that I didn't go natural sooner because I know that refusing to accept my hair for so long was part of my journey to self love and discovery. The challenges lie within the journey and make my story mine and unique. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don’t currently have anything close to a regimen. I pretty much do what I feel my hair needs at the time. On some weeks I’ll wash it once, other weeks twice, other weeks not at all. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Again, nothing in particular. I style my hair depending on what’s going on with it (finger coils, wash n’ go’s, buns). 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a wash n’ go or finger coils, I wear a night cap to protect the curls. If not, I usually just go to sleep with it out and on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don’t use heat and I’m trying not to. I made the mistake of flat ironing the front of my head twice in the past year - once to put in a weave (hated it, never again!) and the other to do a length check. This made my curl patten in the front significantly looser, so I’m definitely staying away from heat for as long as I can.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t braid my hair at all. However, it’s an idea I wouldn’t discard for the future when my hair is longer and maintenance becomes more time consuming. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb! I have something similar to a Denman and so far I’m not impressed. My curls don't look any more defined than when I use my fingers for shingling *shrug* Maybe when my hair gets longer, but as of now my wide tooth comb is cool. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I like to rock it loose as much as possible. You’ll catch me in a slick puff during my “down times.” 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No hair tragedies! *knock on wood* The closest thing was losing my hair in full strands/chunks shortly after I gave birth to my son. But nothing drastic or traumatizing, thank goodness! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Care for it, allow it to be (don’t try to manipulate it too much), educate yourself by learning which ingredients work well with your hair type, replace your conditioners with masques/deep treatments, and pay attention to it. The way your hair reacts to how you treat it is its way of telling you what it needs (or doesn’t!) 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Aishia Strickland and I'm from Chicago...South-Side STAND UP! 2. What is your hair type? Honestly...I don't believe in hair typing...it's hella confusing and it doesn't really tell you anything about your hair's porosity or how to choose your products. When asked about my hair type I normally tell people my hair type is Cute
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to go natural in June of 2011. I felt at that point that I had done EVERYTHING, I'd been short, long, bob'd and colored, I figured let me see what this natural thing is all about. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The hardest thing about going natural was trying to figure out a hair care regimen. In addition to finding out over 4 years later that everything you've been doing to care for your hair has been absolutely wrong. While YouTube and the numerous blogs centered on natural were a great resource I always felt like there was WAY too much misinformation being passed around that I just did what I felt like worked and kept it moving. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Currently since the weather is uber nice here in Chicago I've been all about the wash and go. After doing the 30dayhairdetox I've been able to get my wash and go from shampoo to style down to 30mins. I'm still tweaking my regime a bit to find what works for me....with that being said clarifying shampoo has been a game changer in my routine and is an absolute must for me weekly however with the WNG I need to refresh on day 3 or 4 and co-washing just doesn't quite work for my very dense hair. So, I'm playing with using a cream cleanser for the refresher days and we shall see how that works out. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Before showering I usually take down my pineapple and put my hair in two ponytails to bring my hair back down to gravity. After I've showered and applied my makeup I usually take the ponytails out and tousle it a bit and I'm out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I just take an elastic headband and pineapple my hair for the bed while resting my head on my satin pillowcase. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Up until recently I would get my straightened for my bi-yearly trims. Since getting my hair shaped by an experienced curl artist I now straighten whenever the mood strikes me.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Outside of flat twist or french braids I'm not much of a braid wearer. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I am a HUGE fan of the Felicia Leatherwood Detangling Brush. It is the most amazing tool I own and I just can't stop talking about how DOPE it is to everyone I know. If detangling your hair or your child's is a pain in the ass...you need to get you one. It will change your life, your child's life and your future grandchildren's lives...I PROMISE! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I'm not a big fan of protective styles I like my hair roaming my scalp freely. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, I've only suffered one self-inflicted hair tragedy...in 1998 I had been asking my stylist to give me this really popular hair cut, the official black girl mullet (long in the back and short at the top) my stylist kept telling me no for months and then she finally gave in. Well I got the hair cut, hated it and was right back at the salon 2 weeks later getting my hair cut into a the most fabulous bob...moral of the story; listen to your stylist! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Being the Co-Creator of the 30dayhairdetox my biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is to wash your damn hair...with shampoo. In addition to locking down a sound regime consisting of quality products with botanically based ingredients. Ditch all the heavy oils and butters and really learn how to Cleanse, Condition and Style your hair! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Briana Lynee (pronounced LIN-NAY) and I am from Maryland. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 3C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went Natural in 2009 in highschool. I realized my hair was so thin from all the heat and perms so I decided to stop the perms and go natural. However, it wasn’t until 2012 my Freshman Year in college that I became knowledgeable of what works for my hair and how to properly care for it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I used to find it difficult in styling my hair in my natural state compared to just using heat and keeping my hair straight. This was a learning experience but I am proud to stay that I got it all under control now. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I use the L.O.C. Method every two days. I moisturize my hair on Sundays and I wont touch it again until Tuesday with a cowash followed by moisturizing. Then from Tuesday I will repeat the same steps on Friday. Sunday I will deep condition my hair and then moisturize it and repeat these steps. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I am used to wearing my hair in a bun. So I use my choice of gel for the day followed by edge control and keep my hair up in a bun. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I follow the L.O.C. Method and braid or twist my hair so in the morning I will take it out and style it in my bun as my go to style for during the weekdays. On the weekends I wear my hair out. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I will use heat on my hair in June and in December to keep my use of heat spaced out. I am enjoying embracing my naturalness.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t get my hair braided ever. I may decided to get it braided once every 2 years just cause I hate sitting for so long. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I would prefer a Wide-Tooth Comb just because its easier to detangle the hair. You can always use your hands to evenly distribute product so the Denman Brush isn’t always necessary. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is in a protective style majority of the time. I wear my hair in a bun to keep my ends protected. Wearing your hair in a bun eliminates the chances of your hair rubbing against anything and keeps it off your neck.I only wear it loose during a special event and mainly on the weekends. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Sometimes when I put my hair in bantu knots or try to do a twist out it doesn’t always work out. In crunch time I style in an up-do that is still cute and classy. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Its so important to keep your hair moisturized. Water is the key to growth and oil will become your best friend while being used at the sealant to keep your moisture in. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Margie Muga and am from Nairobi, Kenya. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is type 4c. Sometimes it feels like 4b
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural sometime in September 2013. I had just finished my 2nd year at the University of Nairobi and a lot of things in my life had changed. I needed a new start and a fresh approach to things in my life generally, and chopping my relaxed and weak hair was top on the list. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? At the very beginning, I had no idea about what to do with my short and all natural hair. Being a member of the legal profession that is a bit strict as well as a lover of art which has room for creative energy, I found myself in a dilemma on how to style my hair and yet not conform to set societal standards. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I currently wash my hair once a week. I prepoo, shampoo, co-wash, and deep condition then apply a generous amount of coconut oil/olive oil before styling as desired. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? This depends on what style I am rocking. If my hair is open, then I try different styles ranging from bantu knots to twist outs and hair puffs. On a daily basis, I moisturize and apply olive and coconut oil using my spray bottle. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I apply shea butter to my strands at night and do chunky twist outs, massage the scalp and cover up using a satin bonnet, and for the extra protection, I sleep on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, At least twice a year but only if I really need to.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do cornrows mostly. For box braids/twists, maybe once a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb any time. But finger detangling is the best 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Most of the time, my hair is loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, Losing a big part of my hairline (on the right side) after I had faux locs tightly installed was not funny at all. That’s was one of the reasons I had the big Chop. anytime I braid and I see a change in my hairline, I massage castor oil in the affected areas. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Have a regimen and be consistent with it. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Shivon Carolina and I'm from New York. 2. What is your hair type? I believe I am 4a with some 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had my last relaxer in October 2011, transitioned for a year and then big chopped in October 2012. Honestly it started with me being curious and sort of following the crowd but ultimately turned into a somewhat spiritual journey and learning to accept myself as is (still working on that). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was the short-hair phase and not feeling as pretty or as feminine and accepting my hair with all its kinks as is. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I mainly do wash-n-goes. I will do a wash-n-go once per 1-1 1/2 weeks. I try to deep condition weekly. Every now and then I'll do the occasional ponytail/puff, braid-out or perm rod set. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Take off satin cap, spritz hair with a mixture of mostly water and a little leave-in conditioner and some type of oil (lavender, grapeseed, Argan, almond, etc.) then smooth edges with gel and let air dry. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Throw on satin cap and go to sleep. Or if a manipulated style - spritz hair with water and either re-braid or re-roll (yes I re-braid or re-roll every night lol). 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Very seldom, if I'm in a serious rush and I did a wash-n-go and my hair didn't fully dry, I'll diffuse on low heat or cool for a few minutes. Other than that - no. So far, it seems I straighten my hair (flat iron), twice per year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
If I'm wearing a braid-out yes - in several plats for as long as I'm rocking it. I never wear braids as a style though... 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Ummm yes, perming my hair was a tragedy. I recovered by going back to natural (ha,ha). No really, in high school my hair was natural but I always wore it "pressed". I would either get it done professionally or do it myself. I had become what I thought was a "pro" until that one time when I was distracted and didn't test the hot comb on paper towel and put it directly in my hair...needless to say - comb was too hot and I burnt my hair off. I had short pieces, probably like 1/2 inch or shorter just sticking up and it was in the top middle area of my head. I had to try to comb my hair over it for a while but the short pieces would stick up through it. Once it got long enough I would do a little curl, just a slight bend to the pieces so that it could lay and blend with the rest of my hair, it eventually grew back lol. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Low manipulation, little to no heat, TLC and just simplicity... 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
