1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Jasmine but call me Jas. I live in Cleveland, OH 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 3c/4a.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural almost 5 years ago. I damaged my hair so much between relaxers and hair dye. I just wanted my hair to be healthy. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Being patient was hard for me. Natural hair takes so much more time and product. It's frustrating sometimes; you really have to take care of it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? The most important thing in my regimen is deep conditioning weekly. I try to only do my hair once a week and maintain that style so I don't have much manipulation. Moisturizing every other day is important 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Hope for the best when I take my scarf off 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use silk or satin pillow cases. I use a bonnet and/or scarf every night. And I moisturize as needed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I haven't flat ironed my hair in 6 months and I don't plan to again for a long time. I do blow-dry my hair when ever I want to add some stretch to a style. I try to use the cool setting.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I braid my hair. Very often, more times than I count. I don't trust others to braid my hair because I don't want it too tight so I braid my own hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both, But the Denman is definitely number one on my list. I use my Denman on wet hair and the wide tooth comb if I ever comb out on dry hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Half and half, but I want to start doing more protective styles to keep my ends covered. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I would say my relaxers were a tragedy. Coloring my hair blonde was the worst mistake I've made. My hair doesn't do well with hair color. I had to keep cutting the damaged hair to recover from it. It wasn't worth it. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Deep conditioning and keeping your hair moisturized are very important when it comes to retaining length as well as maintaining the health of your hair. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello! My name is Keianna Springer aka QueensandCurls and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio!! 2. What is your hair type? 4b, 4a (nape and crown)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural back in 2009. I was 14 yrs old and my twin and I decided to to go natural at the same time. My older cousin was natural and we fell in love with her hair so we decided to go natural too! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was accepting my hair texture. We I was transitioning I would other naturals who had looser curl pattern. But about a 1 ½ into my natural hair journey I finally accepted every coily, kinky and curl I had in my hair! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I pre-poo, cowash or shampoo and deep condition once a week 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning routine is very simple and easy. All I do is take my scarf off and go! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a loose style I gather my hair into small pineapples and then I put a scarf on. And if my hair is in a protective-do I just put on my scarf before bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use direct heat on my hair about two times a year. I use indirect heat we needed.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I usually wear my hair in braids 4 times out of the week for my protective style. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective-do 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My biggest hair tragedy happen in fall of 2013. I was going away for college and I kept my hair in braids for about 4 months! That was such a bad idea I had to cut of about 2 inches of hair because of all the breakage I received from neglecting my hair under my box braids. Once I cut off the bad unhealthy hair my hair flourished! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long natural hair is to MOISTURIZE!!! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Keanna Marie. I was born in Fort-Knox Kentucky. Raised in Columbus, Ohio. 2. What is your hair type? According to the infamous hair chart, my hair is a 3b & 3C mix!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I made the decision to go natural almost 5 years ago. I was sitting outside in Grand-Goave, Haiti, chatting with a friend about hair and made the decision, right there, to never get another perm. I don't think I realized what I was getting myself into, ha! But it's a decision I don't regret. I decided to go natural for several different reasons. I was tired of damaging my hair with chemicals. I was also curious to see the look of my "real" hair. So I just "did it!" 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I transitioned for 2.5 loooooong years. No big chop for me. I was so attached to length at the time, so cutting my hair wasn't an option. Working with two different textures was insane. I am a perfectionist. To go from having perfectly straight (permed) hair to frizzy curly hair was quite the adjustment. It also took a toll on my confidence. I wasnt confident in my natural hair at first. And I wasn't the best at styling my hair while transitioning. So I made the mistake of excessively straightening my hair To disguise the two textures, which resulted in severe heat damage. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition weekly! Most people are shocked to find that my hair is actually pulled back into a bun 95% of the time. I don't wear my hair out often. I keep it deep conditioned, moisturized and protected in a bun or twist. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends. Sometimes I'll do a quick washNGo/co wash in the morning and "Bun it" or if my hair is already curly from the night before, I just fluff, pick and go. I try to keep it as simple as possible. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I sleep with a silk scarf/bonnet to help retain moisture. It really helps and makes all the difference. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Direct heat? Not often. I've had severe heat damage in the past, and had to learn the hard way. I keep the use of direct heat to a minimum. As of right now, it's been 15 months since I've last straightened my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don't really braid my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I've never used a denman brush, however, I use something similar. I also use a wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? As previously stated, I use to have severe heat damage. I wear my hair In a washNGo state, which means heat damage is very noticeable if you have it. About 2 years ago, I was in the process of recovering from heat damage. My curls were finally coming back to life. I was using less heat and I was growing out the heat damage. However, if you've recovered from heat damage, you know this is not an over night process. It takes time. I still had pieces in my hair that would not curl like the rest. So one day, while my hair was wet, I took it upon my self to cut out ANY pieces of hair that weren't curly. All the damaged hair had to go. So I started cutting CHUNKS of my hair out. Looking back, I have no idea why I thought this was a good idea. Of course, all the damage was in the front. It was a poor decision I made in the heat of the moment. For some crazy reason, I assumed that because I have thick, big hair, it would dry, the heat damage would be gone, I would have gorgeous curls and the missing pieces would go unnoticed. I was WRONG! The heat damage was gone but I was left with a MESS. My hair was noticeably uneven & I had horrible short bangs. And not the cute bangs. The bangs that looked like they were cut by a second grader. I was so embarrassed. But I made it work. I had to allow the hair to grow back in while also getting professional hair cuts, so they could begin reshaping my hair. Let's just say, I stick to letting the professionals cut my hair now. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Deep conditioning is everything! Find a good deep conditioner and condition weekly/bi weekly. I personally like to deep condition weekly. It helps the over all health of my hair. Trimming your ends as needed is another big tip. I don't go by the 6-8 week rule. I get my hair trimmed when it needs it. And lastly, drink lots of H20. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Jane Lorraine and I’m a natural hair and natural hair history blogger from Ohio, USA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is a mix of 4A-4C hair. It is very dense and curly. I don’t pay too much attention to hair typing, because I have 3 different types on my head. No matter what style I’m rockin’, I have grown to see my hair as amazingly beautiful!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I actually went natural 3 years ago by accident. I got tired of getting relaxers, which always gave me scalp burns, and I needed a change for the better. I also started to learn more about the dangers of relaxers for your skin and health and wanted to truly accept my natural beauty. I simply stopped getting relaxers and did whatever I could to maintain my hair. I didn’t do the big chop but instead transitioned for 2 years since I had no idea what I was doing with my hair! While I transitioned, I kept my hair in cornrows but was not taking care of my hair the way I was supposed to. It wasn’t until 2011 that I discovered YouTube videos that helped me learn about my hair and how to care for it the right way. Now, my natural hair is strong and healthy and I love trying new styles. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural has been just learning how to take care of my hair in it’s natural state, versus taking care of relaxed hair. It is really tragic how most African American women have never learned what to do with our hair unless it has been chemically or heat straightened. I had to start over with the basics of hair care and a completely new understanding of how to have healthy hair. After I became familiar with the process though, I have completely fallen in love with my hair and all the amazing things it can do! I never knew I would love my natural hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I try to keep it simple. I alternate between co-washing and shampooing each week. Then it’s a leave-in, coconut oil and whipped shea butter as my styler. I also oil and massage my scalp regularly and try to deep condition weekly. Most of the time, after my hair is clean, I will do a flat twist and wear my hair in a twist-out most of the week or keep the flat twists in and wear wraps all week as a protective style. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Since most of the time I wear a twist-out, I will take off my satin scarf, and using oil on my finger tips, take my twists down and fluff. It’s that easy! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I’m wearing a twist-out, I will apply more oil to my hair, usually olive or coconut, then cover with a satin scarf and off to bed. If I’m doing a protective style, I’ll do the LLOC method before I go to sleep: re-moisturize with a little water, leave-in, oil, shea butter. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? There are two occasions when I use heat: when I’m trying to dry my hair fast under my hooded dryer, or once a year when I flat iron my hair for my yearly trim. Other than that, I let my hair air dry.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I’ll occasionally do corn-rows for a protective style. Most of the time I don’t braid my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb, I’ve never owned a Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally, my hair is loose in a twist-out. I am going to make more effort to do protective styles this year though. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? There were many times when I would get relaxers which would give me burns on my scalp. I’ve written on my blog about the time when a chunk of my hair came out after wearing relaxed hair in braids and the time a scalp burn started to ooze puss! I’ve had too many hair horror stories to count. The only thing that has helped me recover from those incidents is when I finally stopped doing all the damaging things I did in the past and went natural. It has been the best things I’ve ever done for my hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Find what works for your hair and stick with it. Having natural hair is more than just trying a new hairstyle trend or fad. It is a personal and political statement of pride and love for yourself. You will learn many things about yourself as you go natural, so pay attention to your journey. I have found it to be a freeing and enjoyable experience. Notice how a wonderful thing happens when you accept yourself and let go of external beauty standards that do not nurture you. Most importantly, I want all my natural sista’s to love yourself just the way you are because our kinky, curly, nappy hair is BEAUTIFUL! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I am Ebony and I am from Columbus, Ohio, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I am a mixture. I think I am a mix between 3c, 4a & 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I returned to natural in June 2011. I did it because I had been wanting to take the leap for years, but I didn’t know how it would work out for me. I made the final decision in about a 24 hour time frame and decided I would do it if I woke up the next morning with it still heavy on my mind. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Finding out what works for your hair. Everyone is different and just because anothers hair may look similar to yours; it is not always the case that the same things will work on both heads. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash and deep condition weekly. I am color treated, so weekly DC’s are vital. I don’t have a strict or tedious regimen. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Taking down any set style I may have or co-washing to prepare for a wash n go. I just cut my hair again, so my daily regimen is pretty simple. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Just twisting my hair up and wearing a bonnet. Or maybe just a bonnet, depending on the state of my hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not very often. I can probably count on both hands the number of times I have used heat on my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No. I am not very good at protective styling. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is always loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Sort of! When my hair was longer I bleached my hair a few times and suffered a little damage. That is part of the reason why I cut my hair. I kind of just wanted to start fresh and it is just hair; it will grow back. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Leaving it alone. Low manipulation. If you color treat your hair make sure to get it done professionally and take good care of it. Also, learn your hair and what works for it. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Tywana Smith (Ty) - From West Chester, Ohio. 2. What is your hair type? 4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural about 8 years ago. I had been in the hair care business for about four years at that time. More and more of our clientele were women who had gone natural I got tired of ruining my hair with chemicals and being told that my 4C hair just does not grow. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Finding a hairstyle that worked for me! I’ve done it all- braids, weaves, the big chop, TWA. You name it, I’ve done it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash a couple of times a week. And I do some sort of hair spa treatment also. Sometimes it’s clay or Natural-Laxer MIX, sometimes it’s Natural- Colors henna. We sell a couple of products that I switch back and forth between. The henna not only covers up the gray roots, it conditions my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Simple and quick are key for me. I mist my hair using Treasured Lock Herbal-Leave In Conditioner. I then apply Treasured Locks Herbal Hair Balm and then Treasured Locks Knot No More. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I simply use a satin scarf or sleep on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not any more. Now I only use heat when I get it trimmed. I blow it dry and that is so it can be cut evenly.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I used to braid my hair, but since I went with a super short style I don’t anymore. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman Brush and Knot Genie Brush. I use the Knot Genie to create a distinctive curl pattern in my hair, almost like mini comb twists. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is always loose at this length. I have done different protective styles when I have let it grow out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had a couple of hair tragedies. There was the time I took out a weave and instead of combing through my hair thoroughly before washing, I just washed it. It was almost impossible to get all the tangles out. I had to soak it in leave in conditioner and use a rat tail comb to pull each tangle out one by one. It took hours. Probably getting a bad cut has been my biggest hair tragedy. I have had 3 bad hair cuts since going natural. My policy now is to never let my hair be cut if it is not blown straight. My 4C texture is hard to cut evenly, if it is not straight. Three have tried and failed. Never again!! I recovered by patting an pushing down and waiting a few weeks before getting a recut. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keep your hair moisturized!! If I had to give ONE tip. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Tasha Branham and I am originally from St. Louis, but I now live in Columbus, Ohio. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4. I have all three textures of the type 4 category in my hair. I would characterize my hair as a 4b/4c texture.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in October of 2007 after transitioning for 4 months. My hair was long, limp and unhealthy and I was ready for a change. I had come across a blog online of a young woman that documented her natural journey and it was very inspiring. I also found www.fotki.com, which had a very large natural community. Becoming a member of the natural Fotki community encouraged me to make the ultimate decision to become natural. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing, at the time, was that there weren't many naturals (if any lol) in Ohio. There also wasn't a large selection of products available that were tailored for the natural hair texture. It took me some time to get used to the way I looked with a TWA. I didn't realize how much of my confidence I had trapped in my hair. I struggled for a long time to feel pretty. I had to learn to love myself and my hair all over again. I also had difficulty accepting my hair texture for what it is. I thought that when I did the BC, that my head would be full of curls and ringlets. I had to accept the fact that...my hair will never curl, and to be okay with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My theory has always been "less is more." I barely do anything to my hair. I moisturize every few days with MILK + HONEY products to help my hair retain moisture. Since I use all natural products, my hair doesn't have product buildup. This gives me the freedom to wash my hair less frequently. I typically wash every 3-4 weeks. I used to wash my hair every week. When I did, I battled with extremely dry hair and a dry scalp. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on how I am wearing my hair, (I typically vacillate between 3-5 styles. That's it! lol) I un-braid and style. That's it. Nothing special! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I braid my hair every night in about 2-6 braids, depending on the style that I am wearing at the time. I have to braid it nightly because it helps to keep my hair stretched and tangle free. Because I have an extremely coarse and coily texture, my hair will often tangle around itself if it isn't stretched. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have never worn my hair totally straight since I have been natural however, I have had a handful of blowouts for trims and certain styles.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I haven't worn braids since I have been natural. I have wanted to but I just haven't had the guts to do so. My edges are extremely delicate and I fear damage and breakage due to the stress and weight of the braids on my scalp. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? WIDE TOOTH COMB! The Denman brush takes out too much hair! I've even tried removing some of the rows of bristles. This made the bristles that were left on the brush too weak and flimsy to brush through my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It's usually 50/50. I go through phases of wanting to wear it up, and then sometimes I want to wear braid-outs. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes!! After being natural for about two years, I experienced major breakage around the nape of my neck. I had an entire bald spot. It was awful! I tried everything to get the hair to grow back and nothing worked. I went to the doctor and he asked me what type of pillowcase I slept on. I told him that it was cotton. He suggested that I switch to satin and to then see if I experienced any regrowth. I'd say within about 2 weeks of sleeping on a satin pillowcase, I could feel my hair growing back. The friction of my hair on the cotton pillowcase and me sleeping on my left side caused my hair to break off. I've been an advocate for satin pillowcases ever since! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Listen to your hair! Moisturize, trim as needed, protect those ends and keep things simple! The less you do to your hair, the more it will grow. Hair responds to a routine. Be consistent. Eat healthy, drink lots of water and take vitamins. Healthy hair starts from the inside out. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Victoria and I am from Cleveland, Ohio but currently reside in Indianapolis 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is mostly 4a with a tiny bit of 4b
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural almost 4 years ago (time is flying!) and I did so because for a couple of reasons. I am really into healthy and natural living and once I discovered the horrible ingredients found in relaxers I knew I wanted to return back natural. I also was simply curious about my natural texture. I hadn’t seen it since I was a very small child. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Dealing with the two textures was my issue. Although I had researched in the beginning, I still was doing a lot of things wrong as far as being gentle and the basics of handling hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair every 7-10 days depending on my workload. I wear protective styles most of the time. I usually deep condition with every wash and also apply cassia treatments every now and then. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Over the years I've gotten a lot simpler with my routine. I normally take off my headscarf and spray a leave in conditioner on before leaving the house. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a style that requires sleek edges, I’ll apply a little product then tie on my scarf. In addition I do spray on my leave in conditioner and apply an oil to seal every few days. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I do. I blow dry my hair on using the tension method about every 3-5 months. This usually happens when I install mini twists.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I haven’t had my hair braided (outside of chunky braids for a braidout) in over 2 years. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I normally use a wide-toothed comb to detangle. I only pull out the Denman brush if my hair is extremely tangled. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? About 80 percent in protective styles and the other 20 percent loose. I love mini twists, twistouts and braidouts. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Actually…I haven’t. (Praise Jesus!) 13.
