1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Raquel Robertson. I am born in Dallas, TX. Raised in Denver, CO and currently living in New Orleans, LA. 2. What is your hair type? I have a few different hair types. Wavy in the front which is 3b and back is more 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural about 3-4 years ago. My transition started when I saw a photo of this ladies hair that was so full and curly. In my mind I thought, "yessss, I want my hair like that." I also had a friend that used a lot of natural products on her hair and she introduced me to how she washed her hair and I loved it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging about going natural was having patience while transitioning. Mainly because I wanted my curls to look a certain way. 5. What is your weekly regimen? MY weekly regimen consist of washing my hair at the beginning of the week then wear a style for the whole week. Through out the week I moisturize my hair by spritzing it with water and apply moisturizer and sealant if I need it. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I usually just style my hair for the day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I spritz and moisturize then I wrap it up for then night using a satin scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair occasionally. Once of twice a year I straighten my hair. During this time it’s not a lot of heat just enough to straighten it.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair. I do braid-outs or sometimes I will do a braid style using extra hair. I don’t have any set times. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both a denman brush and a wide tooth comb. I use a wide tooth comb more often. I often detangle with it on wash day. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Since I am trying to grow my hair I like wearing protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had a hair tragedy. When I first went natural I was living in Colorado which has dry air. I was very familiar with what my hair needed. Then I moved to New Orleans and man! I had no idea what I was expecting. After I moved my hair was completely different because of the humidity. I struggled with months to keep my hair moisturized and nothing worked. My hair was always dry no matter what I did. After a while of living in New Orleans I found a new regimen that worked with humidity. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I know a lot of people say this but keeping your end moisturized will help with maintaining length and that will keep your hair long. Moisturizing your hair will keep your hair healthy. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hey you! Yeah, YOU! My name is Linda Hurd and my nickname is Leeny Lynn. I am from the West Bank of New Orleans, Louisiana. 2. What is your hair type? I am mainly a type 4 hair type with a sight mixture of 3b and 3c in the front of my crown.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I actually went back to natural when I was in high school as a junior. I did it because growing up I always had natural hair and peer-pressure made me go to a hair salon to get a relaxer. I was tired of being bullied and called names. I realized that after relaxing my natural hair in eighth grade that people were going to bully me regardless if my hair was relaxed or natural. I started accepting myself for who I was and the young woman I was becoming. I transitioned to natural for 6 months and did a big chop. I never looked back and embraced my natural. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was finding products and hair styles that worked for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen is pretty solid whenever I rock my wash n gos. Oil scalp and do scalp massages Monday through Wednesday. Wednesdays nights I mainly detangle and pre-poo my hair for Thursdays. Thursday is my mid-week wash and re-style. Sunday I shampoo and deep conditioned my hair and style. Then I repeat the same. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning regimen is me simply taking my hair out from under a bonnet or scarf and I shake it out. I pick my roots and spray a little oil mist on my hair and I’m out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My daily night regimen mainly consists of spraying a water, leave in conditioner, and oil mixture on my hair before hopping in the shower. I place a shopping bag on my head to lock in the moisture and it creates the greenhouse effect for my hair. The steam from the shower makes my spray concoction come to life and makes my hair very soft and hydrated. I oil my scalp just a little bit and place on my scarf and bada boom! My hair is ready to play in the morning! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I use heat on my hair to dry my curls after a wash n go. I use heat at least three-five times a month to stretch out my roots too.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I never braid my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb always! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. I don’t really wear protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, I have had a hair tragedy. I over bleached and processed my hair with color. I recovered from my hair tragedy by going back to jet black hair and purchasing me a bonnet dryer so I can deep condition my natural hair with heat. I started weekly deep conditioning and I backed away from bleaching my hair. I also went to a stylist to get a haircut to start over again on my hair care journey. I rid- my hair from those ends and straggly pieces of hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is to never get tired of feeling beautiful. Allow yourself to understand what you hair loves, likes, or hates. Take time out to be patient with your journey and find a regimen that you can stick to for your hair care journey. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Angie and I currently live in the fabulous New York City. 2. What is your hair type? I would say it’s a mixture of 3B and 3C. I love having the two different textures because one is very defined and the other provides volume.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped all of my hair on May 30th, 2015 although I originally played with the idea back in 2010 and tried to transition but gave up after 8 months. I decided to go natural and big chop because my hair was long, yet damaged to the point of no return and I felt like I needed a fresh start. Not only that, but I also wanted to be more in touch with my true self and wanted to love myself more. I felt like going natural was a good place to start on that journey. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was acceptance. I grew up with the deep rooted mentality that I had “bad hair” and that it needed to be pin straight in order to look pretty or for me to be accepted by society. It took years and years to finally arrive at the realization that I shouldn’t deny who I am in order to fit in anywhere. All things considered, I'm not upset that I didn't go natural sooner because I know that refusing to accept my hair for so long was part of my journey to self love and discovery. The challenges lie within the journey and make my story mine and unique. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don’t currently have anything close to a regimen. I pretty much do what I feel my hair needs at the time. On some weeks I’ll wash it once, other weeks twice, other weeks not at all. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Again, nothing in particular. I style my hair depending on what’s going on with it (finger coils, wash n’ go’s, buns). 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a wash n’ go or finger coils, I wear a night cap to protect the curls. If not, I usually just go to sleep with it out and on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don’t use heat and I’m trying not to. I made the mistake of flat ironing the front of my head twice in the past year - once to put in a weave (hated it, never again!) and the other to do a length check. This made my curl patten in the front significantly looser, so I’m definitely staying away from heat for as long as I can.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t braid my hair at all. However, it’s an idea I wouldn’t discard for the future when my hair is longer and maintenance becomes more time consuming. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb! I have something similar to a Denman and so far I’m not impressed. My curls don't look any more defined than when I use my fingers for shingling *shrug* Maybe when my hair gets longer, but as of now my wide tooth comb is cool. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I like to rock it loose as much as possible. You’ll catch me in a slick puff during my “down times.” 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No hair tragedies! *knock on wood* The closest thing was losing my hair in full strands/chunks shortly after I gave birth to my son. But nothing drastic or traumatizing, thank goodness! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Care for it, allow it to be (don’t try to manipulate it too much), educate yourself by learning which ingredients work well with your hair type, replace your conditioners with masques/deep treatments, and pay attention to it. The way your hair reacts to how you treat it is its way of telling you what it needs (or doesn’t!) 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Jessica Correia and I live in Cranston, Rhode Island 2. What is your hair type? I am mostly 3B/3C with my crown being 4A – my hair is a fine texture.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I’ve been natural since 2007 but suffered from SEVERE heat damage!! My only way of dealing with it was to continue to wear it straight or wear it in a bun ( as you can imagine that gets old pretty fast) Until one day while on the phone with my best friend, she began to tell me she had booked herself a hair appointment for a Deva Cut. She convinced me to make an appointment and try out this salon, so I did. Walking into the salon, I voiced my concern to the stylist and told her to just get rid of ALL the damage, so she began to cut. Now this is when I can say I made the best decision ever! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part of going natural is finding the products that work for me. I have friends that are natural and would recommend products, but what works for them doesn’t always work for me. So with trial and error, I’ve nailed down a few holy grail items that my hair loves. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I follow the curly girl method and do the wash and go with sulfate, paraben and silicone free products. I wash my hair once a month – co-wash every 4 days and deep condition once a week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If it’s not my wash and go day, I use a spray bottle with water and spritz my hair to add back moisture and refresh my curls. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? The pineapple doesn’t work for me because my hair is currently a TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) So a satin bonnet is my best friend, I do not sleep without it. For added protection, I sleep with a satin pillowcase over my pillow too. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? NO HEAT!! I big chopped July 2015 and do not plan on adding heat until my one year mark, just to see where it falls.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do not braid my hair. Right now it’s too short, but I can’t wait until I can! 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? 90% of the time I finger detangle but sometimes I use the Denman Brush –I love that brush! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Always loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The only tragedy I can think of is when I had the heat damage – wearing it out curly look ridiculous because my hair strands went from curly to bone straight. So the way I recovered was cutting it! lol 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? DEEP CONDITIONING IS KEY!! Because of our spiral pattern, it takes longer for our natural hair oil to reach out ends so adding back moisture is crucial. Patience is important too – be patient detangling, go gentle on your hair strands to avoid breakage. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Keanna Marie. I was born in Fort-Knox Kentucky. Raised in Columbus, Ohio. 2. What is your hair type? According to the infamous hair chart, my hair is a 3b & 3C mix!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I made the decision to go natural almost 5 years ago. I was sitting outside in Grand-Goave, Haiti, chatting with a friend about hair and made the decision, right there, to never get another perm. I don't think I realized what I was getting myself into, ha! But it's a decision I don't regret. I decided to go natural for several different reasons. I was tired of damaging my hair with chemicals. I was also curious to see the look of my "real" hair. So I just "did it!" 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I transitioned for 2.5 loooooong years. No big chop for me. I was so attached to length at the time, so cutting my hair wasn't an option. Working with two different textures was insane. I am a perfectionist. To go from having perfectly straight (permed) hair to frizzy curly hair was quite the adjustment. It also took a toll on my confidence. I wasnt confident in my natural hair at first. And I wasn't the best at styling my hair while transitioning. So I made the mistake of excessively straightening my hair To disguise the two textures, which resulted in severe heat damage. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition weekly! Most people are shocked to find that my hair is actually pulled back into a bun 95% of the time. I don't wear my hair out often. I keep it deep conditioned, moisturized and protected in a bun or twist. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends. Sometimes I'll do a quick washNGo/co wash in the morning and "Bun it" or if my hair is already curly from the night before, I just fluff, pick and go. I try to keep it as simple as possible. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I sleep with a silk scarf/bonnet to help retain moisture. It really helps and makes all the difference. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Direct heat? Not often. I've had severe heat damage in the past, and had to learn the hard way. I keep the use of direct heat to a minimum. As of right now, it's been 15 months since I've last straightened my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don't really braid my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I've never used a denman brush, however, I use something similar. I also use a wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? As previously stated, I use to have severe heat damage. I wear my hair In a washNGo state, which means heat damage is very noticeable if you have it. About 2 years ago, I was in the process of recovering from heat damage. My curls were finally coming back to life. I was using less heat and I was growing out the heat damage. However, if you've recovered from heat damage, you know this is not an over night process. It takes time. I still had pieces in my hair that would not curl like the rest. So one day, while my hair was wet, I took it upon my self to cut out ANY pieces of hair that weren't curly. All the damaged hair had to go. So I started cutting CHUNKS of my hair out. Looking back, I have no idea why I thought this was a good idea. Of course, all the damage was in the front. It was a poor decision I made in the heat of the moment. For some crazy reason, I assumed that because I have thick, big hair, it would dry, the heat damage would be gone, I would have gorgeous curls and the missing pieces would go unnoticed. I was WRONG! The heat damage was gone but I was left with a MESS. My hair was noticeably uneven & I had horrible short bangs. And not the cute bangs. The bangs that looked like they were cut by a second grader. I was so embarrassed. But I made it work. I had to allow the hair to grow back in while also getting professional hair cuts, so they could begin reshaping my hair. Let's just say, I stick to letting the professionals cut my hair now. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Deep conditioning is everything! Find a good deep conditioner and condition weekly/bi weekly. I personally like to deep condition weekly. It helps the over all health of my hair. Trimming your ends as needed is another big tip. I don't go by the 6-8 week rule. I get my hair trimmed when it needs it. And lastly, drink lots of H20. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Nada (pronounced like Netta) Atabani, from Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. 2. What is your hair type? 3b with fine strands.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I officially went natural July 1st, 2014, after seeing a picture of the most beautiful girl with the most beautiful long curls on twitter. I had always thought that my frizzy curls had to be straightened to look nice (nice as in, shiny, and I would feel comfortable wearing them with a nice dress, etc.) but she had my curl type...so I thought, “why doesn’t mine look like that? what is she doing differently? HOW?” and I started researching on instagram and youtube. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The trial and error phase. Seeing products that seemed to work for everyone on youtube but wouldn’t work for me, the time put into research, and soooo much money spent on products that I would never buy again! I had to learn that all 3b curls are not equal. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Coconut oil prepoo overnight, shampoo with Shae Moisture’s Organic Yucca & Baobab Shampoo in the morning, deep condition with either DevaCurl Heaven in Hair (for moisture) or Africa’s Best Hair Mayonnaise (for protein) for half an hour, rinse with cool water. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If my hair was down the day before, I take out my pineapple, loosely tie a plastic bag over my hair and take it off after my shower. The steam dampens my hair just enough for me to get them back to where they should be. If my hair was up and I want to wear it down the next day, I cowash with Aussie Moist conditioner and style my hair with whatever I feel will work best that day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I put my hair in a pineapple and sleep on a satin pillowcase. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I straighten my hair about twice a year, but I prefer it curly now. I also diffuse if i want my hair to look its best.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I’ve only ever had my hair in french braids or just a regular one-day style with braids in it, but even that doesn’t happen often at all. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I can’t live without either! I use my wide-tooth comb to detangle and evenly distribute my hair products, but the definition that my Denman brush gives me is everything! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Unfortunately, I have to wear my hair up for work, so it tends to be in a bun more often than I like. I wear my hair down every chance I get. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? About four years ago, my hair was so incredibly thin and heat damaged. It looked bad even when it was straight, and worse when it was “curly”. It wouldn’t grow and it was still shedding like crazy. I would probably be bald by now if I didn’t stop using the flat iron every two days. I spaced out my straightening and wore my hair up a lot, then eventually found the natural hair community and started learning to take care of it the way I should. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Learn the balance between moisture and protein. I feel like so many people just try to pack so moisture into their curls that they end up over-moisturizing it, making it brittle and weak. Also, don't underestimate good deep conditioners. They will moisturize and strengthen your hair, but you should get two in order to maintain that balance. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My mother used to relax my hair when I was growing up. The last relaxer she gave me was when I was around 10 years old. Although, I started my natural hair journey in 2013. I transitioned from heat damage for 1 year on June 1, 2013 and then I mini chopped my straight ends on June 1, 2014. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Having two different textures was the most challenging. Products that I used worked well on the heat damage but would work differently on my natural texture. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I pre-poo, cleanse, deep condition and moisturize, seal and style my hair once a week. I massaged my scalp with oil at least 2-3 times a week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on how my hair is, I take my hair down from a pineapple, shake and go. I sometimes apply oil to frizzy curls to reshape them by coiling them around my finger. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I put my hair in a pineapple, cover it with a satin scarf and then I put on satin bonnet on the pineapple part. 8. I braid my hair once or twice a month for a braidout. I get braided protective styles every 1-3 months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both. To detangle my hair, I finger detangle, then I smooth with a wide tooth comb and then I use a denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I wear my hair loose in natural hairstyles more than I wear protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, dyed my ends which fried them. I had to cut them off although my hair recovered. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisturize with a water based leave in and seal with oil. Oil has really helped my hair retain its length. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kharissa and I’m originally from Miami, Florida, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I wish I could say my hair was one texture but it's a combination. I would say it's a mixture of 3B/3C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I've been natural all of my life. Once when I was younger my mom put a relaxer in my hair because my curls were a bit crazy, but that was the first and last time. I was about 7, and it left me traumatized. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I can't speak for going natural, but the hardest thing about being natural is having the patience to properly care for my hair and style it. My hair takes a really long time to dry, so styling is usually a 2-day process for me at least. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don't really have a weekly regimen. I let my hair tell me what it needs most of the time. If I do plan on styling my hair that happens on weekends, and from there I won't do anything until wash day. If my hair isn't styled I try to moisturize at least every 3 days using the LCO method. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning routine is simple. Take of my satin scarf, shake my hair out, and go! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nighttime routine consists of moisturizing (if necessary), putting my hair into a pineapple, and wrapping a satin scarf around my head. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I used to only wear my hair straight (talk about heat damage)! Now, I only use direct heat (flat ironing) every 6 months to do a length check. I do use indirect heat (a bonnet dryer) to help dry my hair when styling.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair sometimes, but not often at all, maybe once a year. One of my new year's resolutions is to try more braided styles. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman brush! I love how it clumps my curls together. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally in a protective-do. My favorite is halo braids. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I've had one hair tragedy where I decided I wanted bangs, and I didn't want to wait until my mom took me to the salon, so I cut it myself. Then I was left with a crooked bang that was short on one side and even shorter on the other! Needless to say I couldn't do anything but let it grow out, but I did rock lots of braided "headbands." 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be to keep your hair moisturized! Dry hair becomes brittle and easily breaks off, and you might not see much growth because it's constantly breaking. Properly moisturizing with products that work for your hair can help improve that! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

My name is Hilary Morgan. I'm from St. Louis, Missouri and I currently reside in Denton, TX. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is a mixture between 3b/c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I haven't gotten a relaxer since I was a child. In December 2014, I decided to stop using heat on my hair and I transitioned for about 8 months when I did my Big Chop in August. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? My biggest challenge when going natural was getting in the routine of a daily hair regime. After my big chop, getting used to maintaining short hair was difficult. I've always had long hair so it was definitely a struggle when braiding and twisting shorter hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash my hair about once a week and I typically wear a protective style over the weekends. I'm sure to detangle at least once a week and I moisturize with water and leave-in conditioner, moisturize with curling creme and seal with a mixture of coconut and black castor oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regime typically consists oiling my hands and unraveling my twists or curls into smaller sections, then using a pick to separate my roots and then style my baby hair ;) 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I'm so lazy when it comes to a night regime. I try to twist my curls but some days my hair doesn't cooperate and I end up just throwing my purple bonnet on my hair and dealing with it in the morning. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I blow dry my hair about once every 2-3 months.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Not often, I'm more of a twist out kinda girl... 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My Big Chop was sort of my hair tragedy. I cut my own hair so it was insanely uneven. After cutting it, I realized what a mistake I made and was extremely self conscious about my hair. I overcame this by working hard on styling and re-cutting my hair everyday until I had a cut I was comfortable with. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Loving your own curl pattern. Your hair is never going to look exactly like mine, just like mine will never look like anyone else's curl pattern. I love MY hair and I do what's best for MY hair. Something else might work better for you and vice versa. It's a beautiful love story. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
