1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Naa but I go by AfrodivaNally on social media and I’m from Ghana, but currently living in Norway for my master’s degree. 2. What is your hair type? At first it was difficult to find out exactly what my hair type was so I would say it was a 4z, but I think its share a lot of characteristics with the 4c hair type, so 4c, it is!!!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Well, there were a number of factors that made me go natural. First, I was frustrated with scabs and burns from relaxers and my host sister from Texas had extremely long relaxed her when she came to stay with my family and on her return, she chopped off all her hair. I was really angry, but that sort of opened my eyes to the wider picture of the possibilities of natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I should say, finding information and products on natural hair in Ghana. Most of the blogs and videos that I would watch were in the US, and I had no means of getiing them in Ghana. That’s what even inspired me to start my blog to document all of this information so I could help others. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My regimen has changed a lot over the past three years and especially since I moved from home. But now, I know what products and techniques that work for me. It’s very simple now. I just co-wash with conditioner every week and deep conditioner every forth night. I just discovered oil rinsing and I plan to incorporate it into my regimen now. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Moisturise with whatever I can grab my hands on and style if I’m stepping out. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I just scarf my hair with a silk scarf or a satin cap and say good night!!! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No. Heat is a no-no for me. Maybe I will blow out and straighten when I reach 5 years. But the thought of heat damage scares me.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I stopped braiding my hair because it was a traumatic and painful experience. In short, I cut out hairdressers from my like unitl I found one, 2 years ago who takes instruction from me. Even, so I have braided my hair just about 3 times in the past two years in Ghana. However, when I moved to Norway, I braided my hair twice in the past 7 months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? None. I stopped using them and only fingers to detangle. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It’s mostly loose. I like having water run through my hair all the time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The only hair tragedy was when I asked a hairdresser to give me faux locks and I left looking like the image of typical Ghanaian witch. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I think it’s a lot patience and time and giving yourself the chance to learn what works best for your hair. It can be frustrating but it really worth all the hassle. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
MelissaChanel! I'm from South Carolina, but I currently reside in NYC. 2. What is your hair type? Honestly, I have several different types of hair so just classifying it to one type would be unfair. I'm like a 3b in some areas and a 4 in others.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started my natural hair journey in 2008 after graduating from college and my stylist explaining that I didn't need relaxers. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Getting my family on board, they weren't fans at first. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair twice a week (sweaty head from the gym) and deep condition once a week. Using Kurlee Belle's natural hair care line. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I recently chopped all my hair off so my regimen is get up and go!! (Be jels, lol) 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I grab my bonnet and slap it on. I'm very minimal when it comes to night time care and again, I recently cut my hair short so this makes it much easier. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? When my hair was longer I would twist on blown out hair once a week, as long as I used a heat protector no damage was caused.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I tried box braids last year and fell in love, I say I get my hair braided about twice a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose! 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? OMG, when I first went natural I thought I could just get up and go, I hadn't combed my hair in MONTHS! I remember cutting and detangling my hair for hours. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Wash, YES WASH your hair, deep condition weekly and get those ends trimmed! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Ariane and I am from New Jersey, US. 2. What is your hair type? I have 4B/4C Hair.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in 2007. I was tired of having damaged broken hair and decided to try something new. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? It was an entirely new territory for me and I had no idea how to style short natural hair. Luckily, I found support through hair forums and just taking the time to learn and experiment with my hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair, deep condition, moisturize using the LOC method, and go with a low manipulation style like a ponytail or twist out. In the winter weather sometimes I wash only every 2-3 weeks. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on what I think my hair needs at the time I either lightly spritz with water or moisturize with my favorite product, primp and go! I keep my hair routine really simple as I am super busy. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I moisturize, put my hair in large two strand twists (for curl definition and to prevent matting), and wrap my hair with my silk scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes. When I deep condition my hair I sit under a hooded dryer. I use a blow dryer to stretch my hair monthly.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I used to braid/twist my own hair more often but as my hair grew in truth I don't have the patience. I do get box braid extensions 1-2x a year, which are done at the salon. 10 Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide-tooth comb and I like to finger comb when I can. I very rarely use any type of brush, unless I am wearing an updo and I lightly want to touch up my nape area. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I rotate between protective and low manipulation styles, for the most part I would say my hair is worn loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My biggest hair tragedy was when the middle section of my hair broke off. In the beginning I didn't know how to protect my hair at night. I use to sleep without wearing twists or pineappling my hair and this made the middle part of my hair extremely matted. As a result I had to cut my hair and start fresh. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Eliminate manipulation of your hair as much as you can. Especially if you have a kinky hair texture, this hair type does not like to be combed, brushed, or styled frequently. The less you find yourself manipulating your hair the more you will reduce your rate of breakage. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Renee Wilson from Orlando, Florida. 2. What is your hair type? Mostly 3c, but I’ll find random 3b and 4a strands.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I did a semi big chop in September of 2011 (hairstylist cut hair in a short style). Then the following month, I decided to cut off the rest myself. I did it due to my hair thinning at the crown from using box relaxers and not having the ambition to relax my hair anymore due to the process that it took. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Learning how in general to take care of my hair in its natural state and realizing water is my friend now. I had to re-train my way of thinking and get my mind out of blow drying and flat ironing. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once a week, but before I wash, I spritz my hair with water and then put a random conditioner and let it set for 30 mins or so. I then shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo and depending on what I feel my hair is lacking that week is how I base which conditioner I use. It’s usually between a protein balance or moisturizing conditioner. I only use a clarifying shampoo once a month. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depends on what style my hair is in, but my daily regimen usually involves a light spritz of water in the morning and some type of leave in moisturizer if my hair needs it, if not I just leave it alone. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Based on the style again, but I go through to see if I need any touch ups on twists or however my hair is styled. I sometimes do a heavier spritz with water at night and use my own concoction of essential oils and shea butter if my hair needs it, then tie it down with a satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do use heat but not often. If I have a style in my head that I need or want to have a certain length then I blow out my hair, but I rarely use a flat iron anymore, maybe once a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I occasionally have someone cornrow my hair maybe once a month if I think of a style that I like, then I do a twist out on the remaining part of my hair. I personally do not like braid outs, I prefer twist outs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I actually use both, but for different reasons. I always use the wide tooth comb to detangle my hair, but if I want to wear my hair in a curly or a wash and go type style, I find I still use the wide tooth comb to detangle, but then I use whatever product for my curls then run the Denman brush through my hair in sections and it helps define my curls. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I usually switch between the two. My protective styles are with my natural hair only and usually worn as two strand twists. If I wear it loose it's usually a twist out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I wouldn’t consider it a tragedy, but since I do not like for too many people to do my hair, I’m usually experimenting and playing kitchen beautician. So when I had a relaxer I decided that I wanted this inverted bob and I just knew I knew what I was doing with cutting. Why I ended up looking like a plucked chicken, so I had to go to someone to fix it. That’s as far as my tragedy goes. I recovered by laughing at myself and knowing that it will grow back. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I would say trimming and moisturizing your hair. Along with knowing how to manage protective styling such as sew-ins, braids, or whatever else you choose, just learn and ask questions about the proper way of maintaining the style before you get it. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello Queens! My name is Ekene, and I’m from Nigeria! 2. What is your hair type? Super kinky 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I big chopped in May 2012. I knew being natural would be healthier for my hair, and I also felt it would be more “me”. Thanks to the lovely women on Curly Nikki and Black Girl Long Hair & many more hair bloggers, I had become aware that it was an option for me to wear my hair in its natural state. AND I’ve always preferred wearing my own hair to extensions. Natural hair presented waaaay more versatility and options than relaxed hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was truly my own mind. I was so afraid, I thought it wouldn’t work out for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I moisturise 2-3 times a week, and when my hair is out, I co-wash 2 times, and I deep condition at least once a week! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Mmm I don’t have much of a daily regimen. I’ve found that I prefer to moisturise my hair at night. By morning, it’s just easier for me to work with soft well moisturised hair that isn’t wet or damp. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? When I have a style in, I just wear my satin bonnet to sleep- and before that I spritz to moisturise if necessary. But when my hair is loose, I chunky twist before bed so my fro is somewhat stretched in the morning. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Hm. I like to steam my hair, that’s indirect heat. But since I went natural, save for a few blow-outs before braiding, I haven’t used any heat on my hair. Maybe when it’s long enough, I’ll try.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I love to braid my hair. About 4 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? If I must choose, wide tooth comb. But if I don’t have to, I’d choose my fingers. :) 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Last year I wore my hair mostly loose in a fro, which in retrospect wasn’t the wisest thing to do because I combed it like every single day, sometimes twice a day or even 3 times! Since the beginning of this year though, I’ve been protective styling - alternating styles with or without extensions. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Hmmm. After my big chop, I felt pretty brave. I had 8 months of growth from transitioning and I wanted to try going even lower. So I went to the barber with wet hair. I wasn’t considering shrinkage and I doubt he knew anything about that. So there was no blow-out. He took his clipper to my wet, shrunken, patted down hair and the end result wasn’t pretty. My hair was patchy in different places. One side was obviously longer than the rest, and in some places, I could see my scalp! :O It was so bad that I went to a salon to get a weave and they didn’t believe a barber could have done that! They asked if I was playing with scissors. So embarrassing, lol that bad! So to fix it, I wore protective styles back to back for 4 months, and then I did a re-chop, bringing everything down to the shortest length. Sigh, talk about my 8 months of transitioning struggle all wasted!! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My hair isn’t long (yet!) but it’s pretty healthy. My biggest tip would be deep condition, deep condition, deep condition! But note that you have to DC according to your hair’s needs. Don’t overdo it, don’t use protein when you don’t have to. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Crystal aka Kriss. I’m from the Philadelphia PA area originally but I’m currently in Delaware. 2. What is your hair type? I consider my hair type as 4C. My hair is very tightly coiled and has a ton of shrinkage.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to begin transitioning to natural in February 2012 and big chopped in August 2012. Prior to that, I had been trying to maintain texlaxed hair and ended up having a huge set back from over processing… my hair thinned out so badly! From that point, I realized that no matter how hard I tried to make relaxers work for me, it just wasn’t the right decision for me. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I think the most challenging thing was the uncertainty prior to big chopping. I had no real positive memories of my natural hair as a child for motivation so it was going to be very new to me. I wasn’t sure if I or my family would like and accept it but I was determined anyway. When I decided to big chop, I made sure that I was comfortable with my decision…I even told myself that I was gonna rock whatever texture I was blessed with to the fullest. :) 5. What is your weekly regimen? I like to keep my regimen pretty simple. I like to detangle mostly with my fingers and detangle with a comb only when needed. I tend to cowash my hair at least twice a week. On my wash days, I moisturize my hair with versions of the LOC, LOCO, or LCO (new to me). After that, I apply my styler (if I’m using one) and set my hair in whatever style I’m going for. Last, I air dry or sit under the dryer (cool/warm setting.) 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Nine times out of ten, I wake up to VERY smushed hair lol! I’ve learned that when that happens, shower steam is my best friend. I hop in the shower and let the steam get to my hair. Depending on the style, I may let a few drops of H20 hit it. Then I’m able to manipulate it into the style I decide to rock for the day. If I need extra moisture I add just a little product. :) 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, my routine varies depending on what state my hair is in (wash & go, twistout, braidout, updo, etc.) I moisturize if needed, and prep my hair for the style I'm choosing to wear. I also sleep on a satin pillowcase, and wear a satin bonnet or satin-like skirt slip. Don’t laugh! :D 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I currently only use my hooded dryer as a source of indirect heat. I use the cool setting which is not “cool” air at all lol. It’s warm air. :)
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have never been one to wear lots of braided styles/protective styles. I rock my hair out 99.99% of the time. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I prefer finger detangling my hair as much as possible, however sometimes I need a little help so I would go with the wide tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I tend to rock my fro loose. I honestly feel like it’s a better fit for me. :) I also have a sensitive scalp and cowash frequently, so I like to be able to tend to my hair as needed. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had SEVERAL setbacks over the years. Where do I begin lol? I would say the most common setback/tragedy for me in the past was thinning hair, broken edges, and even a huge gaping hole in the back of my hair, from over processing. I didn’t do anything major to fix the problem…I just let nature take its course while trying to camouflage the damage. I ultimately decided to go natural. Thank The Lord my hair grew back! :) 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? One of my biggest tips for maintaining healthy hair is to keep it as moisturized as possible. For me personally, without moisture my hair will not act right at all. It would definitely start to rebel, not coil, tangle, break etc. I also think it’s important to embrace what your hair naturally does and try to work with it. Length will come… just keep moving forward. :) 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) You can find me in all these places:

1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Whitney Patterson from Houston, Texas. 2. What is your hair type? 4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My natural hair journey began in November 2009. I was tired of my hair breaking off. It seemed to be getting thinner and shorter by the week. My original intention was to do the big chop and wear a wig or a sew-in until it grew out to a decent length, but it ended up looking cute so I rocked it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I had no idea what to do with my hair. I didn’t know that I needed to moisturize it, detangle it, etc. I had a perm at an extremely early age. Also, there weren't a large selection of natural hair products available in stores which made finding the right products challenging. 5. What is your weekly regimen? By now I have my hair regimen down to a science. First, I pre-poo with Sporty Afros Ayurvedic oil for 15 - 30 minutes. Then, I wash my hair with Nothing But Clarifying shampoo. Next, I deep condition with Nothing But Intense Healing Mask. I detangle my hair while it has conditioner on it. Then, I let the conditioner sit for an hour. After I rinse it out, I moisturize my hair with Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing Spray and Obia Naturals Curl Moisture Cream. Then, I add a bit of Obia Naturals Curling Custard and let it air dry. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning, I spray my hair down with Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing spray. I focus most on the sections where the curls got messed up over night. After my hair is thoroughly dampened, I apply Obia Naturals Curl Moisture Cream, a bit of organic coconut oil and then I shingle my hair with a little bit of Obia Naturals Curling Custard to set the curls. Lastly, I scrunch my hair and let it air dry while I get ready. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I put my hair in a high, loose ponytail or pineapple and sleep on a satin pillow case. Occasionally during the week, I will add a few drops Sporty Afros Ayurvedic oil to my scalp and ends. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat sparingly. I use a blow dryer occasionally but only on low.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Not often. I haven't braided my hair in 3 years. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I actually prefer using my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Since my second big chop, I have been wearing it loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? In high school, I got my hair bra strap length hair professionally colored and it broke off. It was a little shorter than chin length. It was an extremely traumatizing experience. After it broke, I wore it in an awkward bob for a while until I got a cute hair cut. Then, I started wearing sew ins. I wore those for a few years and my hair started breaking again, that’s when I decided to go natural. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Figure out a regimen that works for your hair type and lifestyle and stick to it! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube)
