1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kami, and I live in Washington, DC by way of Syracuse, NY. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is a mix of a few different types, mostly 3c/4a.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural July 15, 2009. I went natural for a few reasons. I always loved big, curly hair, and I also have scalp problems and relaxers would just exacerbate those problems. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Learning about my hair and getting used to it. I'm a little bit style challenged, lol. Getting the hang of braid outs, twist outs, roller sets, etc took a little bit of time for me to learn. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Currently, I wash with Herbal Essence Cleansing Conditioner and detangle right in the shower. Once a month, I use Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor. After I get out of the shower, I moisturize my hair with Giovanni Direct Leave-In, and seal with an oil mix of coconut and olive oil. Then I two strand twist. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning, regardless of the hairstyle I set the night before, I will just run some Giovanni Ultra-Sleek Brazilian Keratin and Argan oil Super Hair & Body potion through my hair, and then fluff, separate, or finger detangle depending on the style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I like to wear my hair stretched most of the time, so after wash day when my hair is dry, I moisturize with Giovanni Direct Leave In or aloe vera juice and seal with an oil mix of coconut and olive oil. Then I will do a style that stretches my hair like braids for a braid out, or rollers for a roller set. I also low bun which can get my hair straight similar to a blowout with no heat. When I do roller sets or bun, I also use Jane Carter Wrap and Roll. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Only for blowouts. I haven't flat ironed in over 3 years.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid only for braid outs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a Denman brush 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose. I do like to do a protective style like two strands twists for a few days once month. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My last flat iron, which was over 3 years ago, caused really bad heat damage. Despite taking all precautions - deep conditioning, using a heat protectant, and low heat - I still had heat damage which manifested as dry, brittle, and split ends. I spent that year trimming my hair monthly to get rid of the dry and split ends, as well as being really proactive in deep conditioning and moisturizing and sealing. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Do what works for you! There's a lot of different regimens, techniques, and advice. One thing works for one person, but may not work for another. Find what works for your hair and be consistent, and you will see healthier and longer hair. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi my name is Kami and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. 2. What is your hair type? I would like to say a mix between 3b and 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in 2001 because I wanted my hair to be healthy and long like I saw in old pictures of myself. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? For me it was perfecting my wash and go's. My hair would get so frizzy and not look good at all. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually do a wash n go now that I have it down. I cowash and then style. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I usually just shake my hair and add curls control paste to my middle part and edges then last apply an oil 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I pineapple my hair for 4 day sometimes 5 day results. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I do. I mostly diffuse my hair when wearing it curly and I also flatiron my hair twice a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Nope I have never really been a big fan but maybe in the future I will try braids. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I would say both it depends on what I am using them for. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is loose 95% of the time 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? YES! When I was little, before I got perms, I had small braids in my hair done by my stepmom. When I came home from the weekend I wanted to help my mom take them out; I was struggling because they were so little so I took the kitchen scissors and cut them out the left side of the back of my head lets just say when my mom saw she was not to happy. Her solution was putting my hair in low side ponytails until it grew back 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture! Keeping your hair moisturized and styled with a weekly routine is my biggest tip. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
1. What's your name and where are you from?
I am Ebony and I am from Columbus, Ohio, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I am a mixture. I think I am a mix between 3c, 4a & 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I returned to natural in June 2011. I did it because I had been wanting to take the leap for years, but I didn’t know how it would work out for me. I made the final decision in about a 24 hour time frame and decided I would do it if I woke up the next morning with it still heavy on my mind. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Finding out what works for your hair. Everyone is different and just because anothers hair may look similar to yours; it is not always the case that the same things will work on both heads. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash and deep condition weekly. I am color treated, so weekly DC’s are vital. I don’t have a strict or tedious regimen. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Taking down any set style I may have or co-washing to prepare for a wash n go. I just cut my hair again, so my daily regimen is pretty simple. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Just twisting my hair up and wearing a bonnet. Or maybe just a bonnet, depending on the state of my hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not very often. I can probably count on both hands the number of times I have used heat on my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? No. I am not very good at protective styling. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is always loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Sort of! When my hair was longer I bleached my hair a few times and suffered a little damage. That is part of the reason why I cut my hair. I kind of just wanted to start fresh and it is just hair; it will grow back. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Leaving it alone. Low manipulation. If you color treat your hair make sure to get it done professionally and take good care of it. Also, learn your hair and what works for it. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Leslie, but I’m known as Kinky Curly Beauty and I’m located in Birmingham, Alabama. 2. What is your hair type? I typically don’t like to be categorized into a hair type. But if I had to state a type I’d fall between 3C and 4A.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
This is actually my third and final time returning to my Natural texture. This last time it was because of premature greying. I had to choose between permanent hair coloring and relaxers, and as many have noticed, I chose the permanent colors. :) 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The only challenge that I notice is that many of us revert our hair back to its natural state but our mindsets remain in a “relaxed” state. It takes us a while to love what we were born with because our mindsets are often still chemically treated. [Heather comment: I love this - so true] I often tell women that in preparing to return to your natural texture, you must also renew your mind...change how you think about your hair’s natural texture. Learn to love who God created you to be. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I use a think moisturizing cream/pudding and seal with oil daily...sometimes twice daily (morning and night). 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends on how my hair is styled. If it's loose I apply a leave-in, moisturizer and my sealant oil every morning. If it's in a protective style I'll spray my leave-in/oil concoction in the air and walk under it to naturally catch the needed mists. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Most times I do the same things at night that I do for my hair in the mornings. If I'm wearing a Twistout/Braidout I apply the previous mentioned products and twist or braid the hair in chunks. Chunky twists/braids promote "big hair". If I'm wearing a protective style I stand under the spray of my leave-in/oil concoction to catch the most then tie my hair with a satin or silk scarf and head to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I’ve used minimal medium hand dryer heat twice in nearly three years. Typically all of my styles are air-dried or created from old twist-outs/braid-outs.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair often, but I don’t use extension hair...only my natural hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. I use the Denman only in the shower and the wide-tooth comb to style normally. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Because I like to change my hair up quite a bit, it’s often loose but I do protective styles often also...I just don’t keep them long. My hair is never in the same style long. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Fortunately I haven’t. But with Natural hair, if you have a few bobby pins, a spray bottle, and some gel, it’s easy to recover from a bad hair day. But to prevent a hair tragedy, carefully detangle, watch for thin/broken ends, trim your ends periodically, moisturize and seal in your moisturize with an oil! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip to our Natural Community would be to moisturize daily and to retain moisture it’s a must that we seal with an oil sealant...I can't repeat this enough. Our hair is like a plant, without water it dries up and dies/breaks, but when watered and moisturized it has a tendency to grow like weeds! 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Julie Thomas aka Juboolee and I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is a mixture of 4c/4b
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I initially went natural in college by transitioning some time in 2007. At this time I wasn’t fully aware of what “going natural” was. I just stopped getting perms and thought that was it. I was still flat ironing my hair excessively, damaging my curly new growth. It wasn’t until February of 2013 where I realized that I needed to start from scratch and decided to big chop and start a healthier hair journey. Best decision ever. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I can’t say that I really had an challenges with going natural or doing the big chop. I just went for it. I say if you want to go natural, just do it and don’t look back. You are making a step to a healthier you, which is a step in the right direction. 5. What is your weekly regimen? First I start off with “pre-pooing” my hair with coconut oil and detangle with a wide tooth comb before the cleansing process. Every other week I’ll cleanse with my Dark & Lovely Anti-Breakage line shampoo and conditioner (love this stuff). For the weeks in between I’ll just simply co-wash with the conditioner. I then deep condition my hair with The Mane Choice’s Green Tea & Carrot Deep Conditioning Mask. After about an hour of letting this sit, I rinse and then follow with my holy grail, Karen Body Beautiful’s Sweet Ambrosia Leave-In Conditioner. I also follow up with coconut oil and my styling cream (shea butter) to twist. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning regimen is quite simple. If I two-strand twisted my hair the night before I’ll unravel my twists with a bit of coconut oil on my fingertips, fluff and then pick out to my desired shape. If I slept with loose curls (in a bonnet of course!) I’ll simply spray with a little water, apply a dab of coconut oil all over, fluff, and then out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Lately, I’ve been two-strand twisting my hair and then applying rods to my twists. A twist and rod set, if you will. Takes about 20-25 mins, which can be tiresome every night, but I wake up with flawless hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have not applied direct heat to my hair at all since big chopping. I’ve been itching for a good blow out to be laid to the gawds, but I’m trying to resist lol.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I’ve rocked box-braids about twice in the past year. I love to put my hair in a good protective style every now and then to give my hair a rest. The key to managing braids and any protective style is making sure that your hair stays moisturized. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both, however prefer a Denman brush. I use a wide-tooth comb in the shower to detangle and a Denman brush to distribute my leave-in conditioner once my hair is cleansed. I love how the Denman brush defines my curls and clumps them together. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I would say it’s 50/50 with me. I change my hair constantly. If I’m bored with my fro after several weeks, I’ll throw in a protective style. Then after several weeks of a protective style I miss my curls. I can’t win! Lol 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have unfortunately. The summer before my big chop I went to a local African braiding shop to get kinky twists installed. I was hyped and thought I was going to be fly. I had already dreamed up styles I would do with them once installed lol. She started at the front of my hair by my temple and got about to the sixth twist when something didn’t feel quite so right. You know how a braider will get to the end of a braid/twist and back up to complete it. Well yea, she was steady backing up to complete this one twist, where I felt my hair pulling and then “SNAP!”. My hair popped off and was attached to this twist. I had a clean bald spot from where my hair was ripped from the root. She tried to say that was there and she didn’t break it off. Ma’m, I did not come in here bald and I felt my hair leave me. Ugh lol. I can laugh about it now but I was livid. I made her take out the few she did and left the shop. I had to purchase a wig until my hair grew back in. Sad! [Heather comment: oh, no! I can't believe she tried to lie about it too :(] 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is again to make sure you keep your hair, and scalp, moisturized. Nobody wants dull, dry and brittle hair. This causes breakage. Keep your hair moisturized will definitely keep it at its healthiest and will in the growth process. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Cannie and I’m from North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? I have a mix of 4a and 4b curls.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had been relaxed for the majority of my life and had long, healthy hair. I hadn’t had any terrible relaxer experiences and I wasn’t truly aware of a “natural movement” at the time. It was 2010 and I had a love/hate relationship with my relaxed hair. While it was long and thick, I didn’t enjoy dealing with it because I felt like my relaxers never “took,” like my hair was always “puffy” and hard to manage. I would get relaxers and it would be silky smooth for a week to 2 weeks, and then it was, what I tended to call it, “unruly.” So I resorted to wearing my hair in braids or kinky twist styles and I simply got tired of it. I wanted something new and fresh. I saw one of my cousin's “natural journey” photo albums on Facebook and was instantly inspired. I truly felt like it would be something I could enjoy, Instead of having angst about my hair, I could have a chance to embrace the kinks! So, I did a little research and took the plunge. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Transitioning was the most challenging for me. Because I was wearing so many braided styles, my relaxers were stretched out, so I had some natural new growth already when I decided to transition to natural. I only intentionally transitioned for around 4 months because the two textures were hard to maintain for washing and styling. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I keep my hair stretched during the week to decrease tangles and for easy styling. I moisturize and seal as needed. I alternate between co-washing and shampooing weekly depending on my hair needs. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? On a typical morning, I will take down the style I prepped for the night before. If I did not prep ahead of time, I will moisturize and style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually moisturize, seal and prep my hair for the style I’m going to wear the next day or reset a style I am already wearing by doing the “pineapple method” or re-twisting. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I typically blow out my hair once a year for a really good trim, but I don’t normally use heat for styling on my hair other than that. In the case that I’d like to get a really nice deep conditioning session, I will sit under a hooded dryer if it is necessary.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I don’t normally braid my hair for styling. I enjoy twist outs because they are quick and easy and I love the overall look. I have done kinky twists and spring twists and that is usually a once a year occurrence. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I prefer to finger detangle first and follow up with a wide-tooth comb to decrease pulling and pressure on the hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It really depends on the time of the year. In the spring and fall, I enjoy having my hair loose. In the summer and winter I love a nice protective style. I love bun styles year round. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I guess I could say I’m in the midst of a hair tragedy now: I have a little bit of breakage and thinning in the back of my hair in the “upstairs kitchen” that I believe is due to wearing my hair up the majority of the time. While my bands are not extremely tight, I’m thinking that, it being constantly pulled up has put a strain on the hair in that area. After a nice trim, I’m “babying” that section and being sure to keep it moisture balanced and not putting any pressure there. Instead of using bands, I can use hair pins or small combs if I’d like to wear my hair up. I’m confident that the fullness will be restored! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be “keep to the basics.” Maintain a regular regimen for washing, deep conditioning and moisturizing your hair. Enjoy styling, but low manipulation can only help and regularly trim. There’s no use holding on to damaged ends; the problem will only worsen. Hair care basics get you healthy hair. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Brittany and I currently live in Columbus, Georgia, USA. 2. What is your hair type? I have 4C hair as well!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had a horrible habit of getting relaxers every month when I came home to see my family. My scalp was so burnt that I could barely use warm water on it. I decided to just wear weaves and take a break from the relaxers. I started transitioning in July 2011. In February of 2012 after taking out a weave, the ends of my hair were severely broken. It was time to big chop. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I would have to say that the most challenging part was getting used to the technique and the way I looked without straight hair. I still struggle to find products that work but I think that is something that takes time. When I did my big chop I hated the way I looked with a TWA! So I taught myself to install Marley twists and box braids. YouTube saved my life! 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash my hair with shampoo once a week. I live by Organix shampoos and conditioners. I usually let my conditioner sit on my hair for about 30 minutes and then rinse it and do flat twists. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If I wash my hair on Sunday, my twists usually last for at least three days. So in the morning I add some black castor oil and I’m on my way. If it’s been a lazy week I usually wear a wash-n-go and put my hair in puff using Eco-styler gel and edge control. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nightly regimen completely depends on my what hairstyle I have. If I have a twist out I try to re-twist at night and wear my silk scarf. If I have a wash-n-go I just wrap my hair up at night. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do use heat. I use heat before I install box braids or Marley twists. My hair literally takes over 14 hours to dry. If I know it will not be dry I use my blow dryer bonnet to speed up the process.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? My first year of being natural my hair was braided for about 6 months out of that year. This year I’ve had it in braids maybe three times but not for more than two weeks. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I live by all my wide-tooth combs. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I love trying new hairstyles and challenging myself to do new styles. I usually keep each style two weeks because my scalp may be irritated. There’s a 50/50 chance you will see me in a protective style on any given day. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve never really had a hair tragedy other than when I did my big chop. I was really upset at the time but it was time to make my leap into the natural hair community. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to be patient. Your hair grows at the rate it wants to and curls how it wants! So always actively teach yourself how to do new styles and embrace what you have. After all it is YOUR hair! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
