1. What's your name and where are you from?
Shaakira Barber. I’m originally from Louisville, KY 2. What is your hair type? 3C/4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Surprisingly, this is my second time going natural. My grandmother wore a big afro in the 60’s and I came across a photo of her and saw the resemblance of our facial features and fell in love. From that moment on I knew I wanted to keep my natural look. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing would be maintaining a straight and sleek hairstyle. Often times when I get my hair pressed it only lasts for that day, due to humidity here in the south. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen consists of washing my hair with Taliah Waajid Clean N Curly Shampoo, The Great Detangler & The Curly Curl Sealer for my wash and gos. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily regimen consists of Lou Ana’s Coconut Oil, African’s Best Herbal oil and oil infused (Argan Oil) water sprayed onto my hair everyday for styling. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night time regimen consists of using a satin bonnet and satin pillow to sleep on in case it decides to slip off. I tend to be a wild sleeper. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I rarely use heat on my hair. Since I’ve been natural I’ve only straightened my hair twice.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair. I love the box braid protective style, Havana twists and the braided Mohawk hairstyles. I get my hair braided 5-7 times a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I love my Denman Brush! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The only hair tragedy I’ve experienced is when I went to the barber to get my afro “trimmed”. I got out of the chair looking like I was a part of the Jackson 5! It was a clean cut and beautiful for that particular moment. The following week I washed my hair and noticed that majority of my loose curls were saturated due to getting the cut. In order to fully recover my hair, I went straight to the box braid protective style, took plenty of biotin and massaged my scalp with coconut oil, to ensure it would grow back to its natural state. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be less manipulation of the hair, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy balanced diet. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Peggy Ann Ellen Arthur and I am from Louisville, KY. 2. What is your hair type? I do not subscribe to hair typing I feel it is another form of exclusion. However, for the purpose of being a good sport I will use the method for this particular platform. The very back or nape of my hair is 3c while the front and sides are 4a the mid section is 4c while the remainder is more than likely a mixture of 4b and 4a. Having said this, my hair is fine and densely packed therefore I treat my individual strands with care as it is susceptible to breakage.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My mother Queen went natural before me. I cut her relaxer out in our yellow painted kitchen at the kitchen table. I spent half of my life having my hair done in the kitchen and the other half in the salon. After graduating and moving to Chicago to start my career as an insurance broker my hair began to come out from the root around the edges. Dermatologist blamed the relaxer and or stress. Years later when my best friend Jennifer Buggs successfully attempted to go natural after 2 or 3 attempts I followed. It was a money of “hey girl you go first and let me check it out.” Learning from my friend’s experience I followed out of necessity. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? In lieu of big chopping I wore weave during my transition. I knew nothing of how my hair grew or any of the nuances that came with the new post. Instead I wore my sew-in faithly expensive hair flowing in the City wind. When it was time to cast aside the weave it wasn’t by my choice but at the request of the stylist. He said Peggy I don’t do natural hair and you’re hair is long enough to go without weave. My confidence was tied to my hair length. I was seduced by length thinking that it was the only thing that made me attractive. But with the weave came the obsession to look perfect. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition weekly followed by a leave-in and oil. Typically I use one cream based product (with little water content) as I rarely use heat on my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I apply oil and or a daily conditioner to keep my hair hydrated. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use a light oil at night and sleep with a silk bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat when getting my hair cut. However, since I transitioned in a sew-in my hair isn’t even. My goal is to have an even blunt cut.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No...no..no braids I tried senegalese once and it took over 10 hours from beginning to end. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I have been neglecting my tresses due to my tender headed life story. However, after having had almost 4 inches cut off this summer from not minding my trims or properly detangling. I now faithfully use both my wide tooth comb and Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair has been loose more so now than in the past. However, I will be returning back to my protective styles very very soon. As I am the Queen of Protective Styles. I love a pose protective style. I will share with you a few that I have had overtime. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair is to realize healthy hair is strong hair. Weak hair will not be strong as it will break. Therefore, I recommend sleeping with a silk pillowcase or bonnet, detangling your hair properly, maintaining regular trims, using oil at least once daily, deep conditioning weekly, and using a protein conditioner at least once monthly. And most importantly drink WATER. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
