Queen Eunique ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Eunique Gaines-Morreale and I am from Franklin Park, New Jersey

2. What is your hair type?

My hair type is 3c/4a
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I returned to natural October of 2014. The reason I returned natural is because I was a freshman in college who could not afford to get her hair done every week at a hair salon. I also wanted to return natural so that I could become comfortable and more confident in myself.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing about going natural was establishing a relationship with my hair and really getting to know it.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

I wash my hair once a week with a sulfate free shampoo, a moisturizing conditioner, and lastly a thick deep conditioning hair masque.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

Considering I always have my hair in a style, my daily regimen is simple. All I do is wake up, refresh the style and go on about my day.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

Again since I always have my hair in a style, my nightly regimen is to preserve the style in 4 mini "pineapples", throw on my satin bonnet, and go to bed.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

I use the most minimal amount of heat on my hair as possible. I am currently on a personal "Year with no heat" challenge. I will make one year without heat on April 10th. Since the challenge has been going really well, I am considering only straightening my hair once a year.
Picture
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

I do braid my hair, about twice a year.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

I like both wide tooth combs and Denman brushes but for different purposes. I prefer to use my Denman brush when detangling wet hair and my widetooth comb when detangling dry hair.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

My hair is normally loose. However, I do occasionally do protective styles.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

A hair tragedy that I've had is when I got a sew-in for prom. When I took the sew-in out, my leave-out area was completely heat damaged. I was very frustrated because the rest of my hair was kinky and coily while my front leave-out area was straight and damaged. How I recovered from it was by using no heat at all on that area and keeping it moisturized at all times. Once I noticed that it was started to get longer I cut the damage off little by little until it was gone completely.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

My biggest tip for maintaining long, healthy, hair is to ALWAYS keep it moisturized. Often times people will come to me and tell me that their hair "does not grow". However, that is far from the truth. Our hair is always growing but one will never recognize the growth of their hair if they are not retaining length. The key to retaining length is to moisturize! Moisturized hair grows, dry hair breaks off.

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Jessie Antionette and I'm from Lawton, OK.

2. What is your hair type?

4C- coarse, naturally dry, low porosity
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I went natural November 2012. I did it because it was tending; I stuck with it because I became infatuated with my hair.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Lengthy Wash Days

5. What is your weekly regimen?

Prepoo, shampoo, condition & style

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

Moisture then oil to seal.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

Moisture right after shower then wrap it up!

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Yes I love heat! I have no rules I use it as often as I want (but not excessively). I counter heat damage by using specific heat protection products & adding protein treatments before and after heat styling.
Picture
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

Yes, I love braided updo;  I could do those once a week maybe every two weeks if I braid tight enough. I may do a protective style like box braids once or twice a year.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

I use a wide tooth comb in a regular basis to detangle. If I want definition for a twist out, coil out, etc will use a denman brush while styling.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

My hair is usually in two flat, chunky two-stand twist.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

My hair tragedy was in April 2013 when I stopped getting relaxers and tried a variety of DIY treatments. I hadn't done much of any research and I thought my hair coming in (new growth) needed protein. Terrible mistake! I was doing DIY egg/fresh minced garlic protein treatments as much as 3 times a week! I lost the majority of my relaxed hair in the middle of my head; I had edged though! There was no recovery y'all! I did the big chop that same month, but I got a weave cause I was scared to see what I looked like without hair! 3 months later I took the weave out, did research on hair care and fell in love.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

Keep your scalp clean, eat well, drink water & fine products that work for you! Popular products are cool but don't work for everyone. Also, experiment cautiously.

Picture

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

My hair likes to eat combs so i use brushes

I'm a free child so it's usually loose

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

Of course! I usually end those problems with soaking my hair head in water and wearing a high bun. If I can't do that I'll tie all of my hair in a scarf piled up on top of my forehead

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

leave it alone, my hair doesn't like to be pulled into a complete different style everyday. the less i bother it, the thicker and long it becomes.

Queen Janet ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Janet Yeboah and I'm from Ghana. I live in the U.S.

2. What is your hair type?

I don't follow the mainstream hair typing system because I feel it's irrelevant to the health of your hair. Knowing your hair's texture, density, and porosity is more important in knowing how to care for your hair and what products to use. I have kinky corse texture, medium density, and low porosity hair.
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I big chopped on December 6th, 2014. I decided to return natural because my relaxed hair was never healthy so I started researching on how to achieve and maintain healthy hair and I came across natural hair videos on YouTube and fell in love. I also learned about the harmful effects of relaxers on our hair and body and from that moment, I knew I wanted to grow my natural hair.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing was trying to get the people around me to also understand and accept my natural hair.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

I wash and deep condition my hair every 2 weeks and I moisturize every 2 days or whenever my hair feels dry using the L.C.O. method.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

I usually have my hair in twists or braids the night before so in the morning, I just unravel, fluff, and go.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

I usually re-twist/re-braid and cover with my satin scarf at night. Or if I'll be doing a puff or updo the next day, I simply put my hair in about 5 loose puffs and over with my satin bonnet.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Yes. I blow dry and trim every 3 months.
Picture
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

Yes. I'll say once or twice a year during the winter months.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

I rarely use a Denman brush. I finger detangle during the week and use a Wide-tooth comb on wash days.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

Loose

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

Yes. I installed box braids when I was relaxed and most of my hair broke off after taking them out. That motivated me even more to go natural so I cut the thin ends off and transitioned to natural hair.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

Accepting and loving your hair in whatever texture, shape or form, healthy diet and drinking lots of water, keeping hair moisturized and trimmed when needed.

Queen Brittany ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

17/2/2016

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Brittany Ingram and I'm from. Spartanburg South Carolina

2. What is your hair type?

My hair type is 4c
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I went natural about 1 year 1/2 ago and I originally did it due to my alopecia, hoping that by not having any relaxer on my scalp may help with my hair growing back. Then I went to a natural hair event in Japan on an Air Force base and the women there were all natural but with different styles and textures. It looked really amazing and it also gave me the inspirations and the extra push to go natural.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging part about starting was thinking that my hair was too nappy to be pretty and that I wouldn't look good with the natural styles like some other women. "I would say that, that natural look, it's not for me". Once I was able to see that I could do different styles with it, I likes it more. I started low and cut all of my hair off even all over, and once it became long enough I did some protective styles to change it up a bit (braids and twist). My hair grows really slow so that's frustrating  as well.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

My hair is very low maintenance. I cowash it weekly apply leave in conditioner and apply some oil (olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil) for hydration. I will deep condition it once a month and wash with shampoo once a month.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

I typically spray it with a little water to loosen it up and apply a pea size of oil for extra hydration. Then I'll spray a little bit of leave-in conditioner to style it and shape it. If I add too many products to my hair it makes it hard and dry.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

At night in pretty simple. I allow the steam from the shower to soften my hair and  I just twist it up (two strand twist)  and apply a satin bonnet.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Sometimes If I want to braid it for a protective style. Other than that I allow it to air dry.
Picture
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

I love braids and experimenting with my hair. I may braid it 2/3 times a year.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

I like both depending on what style my hair is in. I use my wife tooth when I want volume and I use the denman brush to really smooth out the coils.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

I go back and forth because I get bored with styles really easily so 60% of the time it's natural and 40% protective styles.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

Yes. Not too bad. It was a protective style that someone did. It was horrible and too big. I just took it out and rocked my natural hair. (Pretty simple and quick fix). ;)

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

I'm still learning about how to Maintain healthy hair but I would say education about your own hair type and listening to your hair as it responds to products is key.

Queen Mimi ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

15/2/2016

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Mimi Irvin “aka” Corporate Chic. I am a wife, mother of two handsome boys, daughter, friend, and have been told a fashionista.  My day job consists of a career as a Project Engineer working in Corporate America with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I was born in Yokosuka Japan, from a military background and traveled every three years of my life. So for me home is where I make it and currently that is in Houston Texas.

2. What is your hair type?

I believe I am in between a 3B and 3C
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I contemplated the idea of going natural in early 2011 and although I loved the relaxed looked and didn’t suffer from breakage, but I wanted something different. I was set forth to go on assignment in the Netherlands with my company in January 2012, so I decided December 2011 would be my last relaxer. I wouldn’t have to worry about the Texas humidity and I felt the transition would be easier to deal with in cooler temperatures. As I tried many styles as I could during my transition, 8 months would be the end of that road. I decided to do my BC August 2012. As I sat in the mirror cutting each section it was very hard to get through. I had about 3 inches of new growth but after completing that hard effort, I looked in the mirror and said yes this is ME and I will ROCK it.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The challenging part about going natural is that its trial and era with hair products. With relaxed hair, you have setting lotion, oil sheen and your wrap cap for the most part. With Natural hair and depending on your curl pattern, not every product will work for you. So it takes patience and interacting with other naturals to help find your staple.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

If my hair is not twisted, I typically I will pin it up at night and sleep in satin bonnet. In the mornings I will spritz with water, add Coconut oil or shea butter and style in an up-do or wear loose.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

In the mornings I will spritz with water, add Coconut oil or shea butter and style in an up-do or wear loose.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

If my hair is not twisted, I typically I will pin it up at night and sleep in satin bonnet.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

I use minimal heat on my hair. I have only had my hair flat ironed twice since I’ve been natural. From time to time I will do a roller set and sit under the dryer. Other than that I use heatless styles such as twists, bantu knots, twist outs and wash and go’s.
Picture
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

I twist my hair and typically wear for a week or so. I’ve never work braids that calls for extensions. I like to change my hair to much, so that is one reason I haven’t gotten braids in my hair.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

Yes to the Wide-Tooth Comb. I love it and it work best for my hair.  I finger detangle my hair when its wet and then I use the Wide-Tooth Comb. I use the Denman brush from time to time, but to get through my hair I need a comb.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

I typically wear my hair loose either in a wash-n-go or twist out.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

I honestly have not had a hair tragedy since I’ve been natural. The two times I had my hair flat ironed, it loosened my curls a little, but that was it. That is why I use minimal heat and dyes on my hair.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

My biggest TIP for maintaining healthy hair is keeping your hair moisturized and your ends trimmed. I know that is easier said than done. The key if finding the RIGHT product that moisturizes your hair texture. For those women that are thinking about going natural, I say embraces it. It’s a journey, and with every journey newness is born.  It’s a lifestyle change. It takes confidence, and as women we must have self-confidence no matter the circumstance.

1. What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Doni Raye and I am from Southern Louisiana.

2. What is your hair type?

My hair type is 4b/c.
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I went natural on January 1, 2014 because I wanted a fresh start in life. I wanted to be liberated from society’s definition of beauty.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Finding the courage to actually do it. Nothing else in my journey compares to the fear that I had when I first big chopped.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

Every Saturday I do a hot oil treatment, wash, deep condition, and style.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

I do light coconut oil and water and style because it is already moisturized from the night before.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

I use a satin cap to sleep after I do my daily moisturizing.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Once, it was a huge fail. I ended up putting a kinky straight ponytail on it after my flat iron puffed up.
Picture
 9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

So far, I’ve only had one protective style other than my faux puff and that was my marley twists. So, I’d say maybe once or twice a year. My edges or thin so I try not to do braids often.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

Wide-tooth comb.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

It’s about what and what. I wear my faux puff a lot since it’s cold and I don’t want to wash my hair because I get sick easily.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

I big chopped twice by accident. After the first one in January, I went to a barber and he cut me like a boy in May 2014. So, I had to grow it out again.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

Still trying to figure it out, honestly.

Queen Ashley ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

3/2/2016

1. What's your name and where are you from?

Hi! I’m Ashley Michelle from Memphis, TN!

2. What is your hair type?

It’s a mix of a few different textures. It’s mostly 4a/4b with a bit of 3c.
Picture
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

There was a time when was I hooked on the creamy crack and you couldn’t tell me any different.  That was until the constant use of it caught up to the health of my hair and scalp.  My long thick hair had become thin and broken and literally left me heart broken! (no pun intended).  I suffered through chemical burns, unflattering “trims”, and more.  These issues caused a downward spiral in my self-esteem.  I felt unattractive and found myself trying to hide my hair with hats and scarves on a daily basis.  It was then where I realized, “this CANNOT be life.”  After transitioning for 3 months, I big chopped on January 3, 2010 and it was one of the most liberating feelings of my life.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing was trying to figure out what to do with my hair.  It was always dry and matted.  Sometimes I felt discouraged, but my thirst for knowledge made the research and process of trial and error tolerable.  Once I learned more about ingredients, techniques, methods, etc., my journey became a lot easier and fun!

5. What is your weekly regimen?

I try to keep it really simple because I hate being in my hair all of the time #LazyNatural lol. Once a week I wash, condition, and style my hair. I usually style my hair in a twistout or braidout which lasts for a week. This keeps the maintenance pretty low in my regimen.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

Since my shrinkage is so disrespectful, I never re-moisturize or wet my hair in the mornings. My poor tresses will shrivel right on up lol.  I usually take care of that situation the night before. So my mornings consist of me simply fluffing and going.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

I have 2 night time routines.  Whichever I use depends on the state of my hair.  If it’s dry, I re-moisturize with 1 of my fave moisturizers then either high bun or plait my hair (which helps combat shrinkage).  If it’s well moisturized, I simply throw it in a high loose bun or ponytail.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

I used to use heat maybe 2-3 times a year, but as of late, I haven’t used heat in almost a year.
Picture

9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

No, I tried to wear braids during the early stages of my journey.  Unfortunately, it was not for me or my scalp.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

Wide-Tooth comb and finger detangling! Can’t go wrong without em!

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

It’s normally loose. I protective style from time to time, but it’s mostly loose in a twist/braidout

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

Besides my whole relaxer disaster, the worst issue I’ve faced with my natural hair was breakage.  It was during the early stages of my journey.  I really didn’t know what I was doing so my hair was dry, mishandled, etc. I fixed it by researching and trying different techniques/method to maximize moisture retention and growth.  Once I found what my hair liked, my journey became a lot easier and my tresses began to flourish

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

Just starting out, you will encounter A LOT of trial and error, but that’s okay! I can’t tell you how many different products I’ve tried over the years until I found something that actually worked for me.  To make your journey a bit easier I recommend keeping a hair journal to document what works and doesn’t work for you.  This will help build a healthy hair regimen suited to YOUR hair’s needs.

In addition, utilize tools such as google, YouTube, social media, and books to expand your knowledge about natural haircare.  The books,“The Science of Black Hair” and “Hair Care Rehab” by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy helped tremendously in the early stages of my journey and continue to help me today! Oh, and one last thing, enjoy every stage of your journey! Your tresses are unique to you will flourish with a bit of TLC, so don’t worry about what the next natural has going on.  Just do you and before you know it, your tresses will be blossoming like the beautiful flower it is!

Although I was natural most of my life there was an 8 year period when I wore a curly & straight weave. I wanted the length and I felt insecure about my damaged curls. I've been completely natural now for 7 years and it's because I finally accepted my curls as beautiful.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Transitioning! I didn't do a big chop so I wore extensions throughout my transition. However, my exposed natural hair was completely damaged from heat and color. When I did finally take out my extensions, the exposed hair had a completely different curl pattern then the rest of my hair. It took a few years of growing and trimming to get my curl pattern all the same.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

1-2 times per week I wash my curls with a sulfate free shampoo or cleansing conditioner. I then follow with a moisturizing conditioner. I try to deep condition at least once a week but sometimes I just leave my normal conditioner on longer. I apply my styling products to wet hair (I never dry it) while my head is flipped upside down. Then, I scrunch them and leave them alone until they are 100% dry. Once my curls are dry, I then proceed to fluff with my fingers and a pick for volume.

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

Fluff and go!

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

Place my curls in a pineapple and sleep on a satin pillowcase.

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Usually, only if I'm in a rush. I do like the volume a diffuser brings though.

9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

I haven't worn my hair braided since I was in high school. The only time I wear braids now is when I do a braid out overnight.

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

Wide-tooth comb

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

Normally loose, I love to let my curls be free!

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

A tragedy? How about many tragedies! It's part of my hair life lessons. One that stands out was when I was relaxing and bleaching my hair at the same time. Major fail! Hair loss, breakage and heartbreak. That is when I decided to wear extensions.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

Regular trims, scalp massages and deep conditioning.
