1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Joan Akob and I'm Cameroonian, but I've been living in South Africa for the past 7 years. 2. What is your hair type? I'm proudly #Team4c hair. Woop woop.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I returned to natural hair this year on the 2nd of January. I had long relaxed hair but decided to do a big chop because I was suffering from severe scalp damage. My scalp was very sensitive to relaxers and got burnt countless times. My hair started to break and my scalp bled when I did hairstyles. It was really painful and so I made the brave decision to chop it all off and start afresh. Best decision I made. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing definitely has to be the detangling of the thick fro. My hair is fully loaded and so I really battled to handle it. The reason I ran to relaxers in the first place is because I couldn't comb it. So before I discovered detangle sprays, wide-tooth combs or even using my fingers, detangling was my biggest challenge. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don't really have a weekly regimen. It's more like alternate weeks and its really simple :) When my hair is out of a protective style, I wash with shampoo and conditioner once in every 2 weeks and co-wash only for the following two weeks. Before washing, I always do a hot oil treatment with castor oil, which I leave in for 45 minutes. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every morning, I spray my hair and scalp with my homemade Aloe vera Juice. This has been working really well to heal my damaged scalp. Our garden is blessed with loads of aloes so i just chopped off two and made a juice. I did my research and found that Aloe vera helps to reduce the redness, itching, scaling and inflammation of the scalp which directly benefits the hair. This is due to it's enzymatic properties. Aloe vera has many more benefits for hair such as, reduction in hair loss, balancing the pH of the scalp, improving hair growth etc. you really should google it. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I believe water is my hair's best friend. So every night I spray my hair and scalp with water and also use some hair food/ hair oil if my hair is dry. Then I wrap it all up to lock in the moisture. In the morning my hair looks healthy and happy. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I rarely use heat on my hair. The only time heat is used on my hair is at the salon, when hairstylist blows out my hair to make it easier to handle. Apart from that, no heat is used on my hair. I always let it dry naturally after a wash too and I've never flat ironed it.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair. So far it's been 4 times this year since the big chop in January. I try to do braids that lasts 3 weeks to a month and alternate with a full month (the next month) of TLC for my natural hair, were I just pamper my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? In a protective 'do. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Ohhhh how can I forget! My biggest dilemma was a couple of months ago when I was doing a hot oil treatment on my hair. The castor oil rolled from my hair in a big drop and into my eye. As if that was not enough, the same happened to my other eye. I thought I was about to go blind. It was like needles poking my eyes! I couldn't even open them. I struggled my way to the bathroom and tried to wash my eyes with water, which just made it worse. I eventually just went to bed and tried to forget the pain hoping my eyes will heal themselves. It worked. After a couple of hours I could open my now really red eyes...I was like #blink #blink "Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy" . Even though things looked a bit misty, I'd never been more grateful for my sight. My eyes are fine now :) and I take extreme caution when doing hot oil treatments. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Water Water and more Water. Keep your hair hydrated always. Use it in your regimen daily and it'll keep your hair healthy. And healthy hair = hair that will grow. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Nandi; born and raised in Sweden with a mother from Germany and a South African father. 2. What is your hair type? I'm not a big fan of hair typing, but I think I'm a 3b or 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I've been natural most of my life; I had a short-lived experience with relaxer at the age of 18. But since I had less knowledge of how to care for my relaxed hair than my natural hair I quickly returned to my natural hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I think the most challenging think about natural hair is figuring out what works for you and what doesn't. A lot if trial and error is involved in this. It's what started my blogging journey, trying to figure out my own hair and paying it forward to others. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash my hair once a week, depending on how my hair feels I'll use a cleanser or ACV and then a conditioner or deep conditioner. I usually wear a wash n go with only leave-in conditioner for the first couple of days after washing and then as the week progresses I refresh with water and leave in. As my hair frizzes up I usually do some kind of style using a gel to keep the hair in place. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I shake my hair out, spritz with water and add leave in conditioner if needed. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Right now I just wear a pineapple or a bun to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? In winter I diffuse my hair to cut down on drying time. The last time I flat ironed my hair was in the spring of 2013, I usually don't flat iron my hair more than once a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I did wear Marley braids twice this year, but I don't really wear hair extensions regularly. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Over the last year I've worn my hair out a lot and love it! 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Can't think if anything... Nope. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Don't stress about length! Focus on healthy hair and it will grow. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Ruth Mafupa and I am a Malawian living in Johannesburg South Africa 2. What is your hair type? I have predominantly 4b with some sprinkles of 4a and 4c
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started my transition to natural hair in 2011 (January). I did a long transition of 2 years and became fully natural in January of 2013. I did not like how my hair looked when relaxed. It was so thin, limp, dry and was breaking chronically. I knew that if I wanted fuller healthier hair, I had to grow it natural. Natural hair bloggers and vloggers also inspired me to think of natural hair as a healthier alternative that could give me the fuller and healthier hair that I wanted. I signed up for an account at Natural Sunshine and the weekly emails urged me to take that leap and stop relaxing my hair. When I relaxed my hair for the last time on the 8th of January 2011, I knew even then that it was for the last time. I have never looked back. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I transitioned for 2 years so managing the two textures of my hair was very challenging. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once a week by doing a pre-poo, shampoo, deep condition and then moisturize. I then twist my hair to let air dry. I normally wear my hair in an updo in a twist out or mini twists. I spritz my hair with a water and oils mixture at least once a day and will do a proper moisture session in between wash days where I apply a water based leave-in conditioner or my spritzer to make my hair close to damp then apply some oil and then Shea butter. Basically the LOC method. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I spritz my hair with a water and oils mixture and style my loose hair or protective style mostly in an updo. Sometimes I have a protective style that I keep for a few days like a tucked updo then I just remove my satin bonnet or scarf, tidy the edges and hit the road. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? This depends on whether I have my hair loose in a twist-out, mini twists or hair extensions. When I have my hair loose in a twist-out, I will spritz it with my water based spritzer very lightly and then band it with ouch-less hair bands in 3 or 4 sections, place a satin scarf over it and hit the pillow. This I find gives my hair maximum stretch and keeps tangles away. If I am wearing my hair in an updo the next morning, I may also style it up before going to bed so that styling my hair does not delay me in the morning. This limits the styles I can do on my hair if I am styling the night before but that is okay. When my hair is in mini twists, which I do very often, I also spritz my hair with my water based spritzer and then seal lightly before styling for the next day or two and then tie a satin scarf on and I am good for bed. This applies for when my hair is in Havana twists or Senegalese twists as well. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I do use heat on my hair about once or twice a year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I do braid my hair and I do this very often. My hair is mainly in two strand twists also known as mini twists and also use hair extensions for Havana twists and Senegalese twists. I rarely braid my hair though as I find braids harder to undo. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. I feel both have their purpose. I use the wide toothed comb more though. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It is more in a protective styles. I love low manipulation styles as they give me more time on my hands where I am not doing hair and also give my hair a chance to retain more length. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have hey. I experienced excessive shedding after delivering our son in 2012 and up to now I am still trying to recover from it. My hair is quite thinner now than before so I am on a hair challenge right now to grow it thicker and longer this year. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Be kind to your hair when handling it and use products that work for your hair. How one handles their hair is more important than what products one uses. Listen to your hair needs and do that consistently and your hair will flourish. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
