1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi, my name is Ezeh Cynthia and I am from Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in March of 2015; am the reason I went natural is because of the fact that my new relaxer which was PROFECTIV was making my hair shed and thin. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was having to deal with two different hair textures because I didn’t do the BIG CHOP; I transitioned. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I have no special weekly treatment because most times, am on a protective styling though most times I try to clean it by washing but when not on protective styling, I wash every two weeks with black soap and I deep condition with heat before LOCing my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily treatment is massaging my hair with essential oils and pressing down my edges. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night time regimen when not on protective styling is sealing my hair and protecting it with my satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Since I went natural, the only time I use heat is when I am deep conditioning.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I braid my hair like 4 times in a year. When I am not carrying my natural hair or on braids, I am on weaves and wigs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide tooth comb for my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally on a protective hair do. I only wear my hair loose when u feel like I have gone too long on a protective styling and I want my scalp and my hair to breathe. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, I have had a hair tragedy and it happened early this year. I had traction alopecia and like a large number of my front hair was gone and my front hair looked like I had receding hairline. I made use of of JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL, TEA RINSE, ONION+GARLIC+GINGER RINSE. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining long and healthy hair are good detangling, washing the hair in section, deep conditioning especially with heat, use of satin bonnet and protective styling. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Nimi Aworinde. I'm a medical student, cake lover, and natural hair blogger. I am from Lagos, Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? I have mostly 4c hair and a bit of 4a hair at the back. My strands are thick and my hair is super full.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in 2013 after watching some natural hair styling tutoriasl. I tried them out on my relaxed hair and was very upset because it wasn't as beautiful on relaxed hair. I ended up big chopping without transitioning. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me is the shrinkage and all the tangling that comes with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My hair lives mostly in protective styles, but when it's out I deep condition weekly, and shampoo fortnightly. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I simply refresh my curls with my moisturizer or leave in conditioner. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use the LOC method at night. I spray with water, and then lock the moisture in with coconut oil and either my leave in or organic shea butter. Sometimes I leave the oil out, because I don't want my hair to get too oily. So most times it's the LC method for me. :). I never forget to sleep with my satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I blow dry my hair whenever I don't have time to stretch it without heat.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? My hair is almost always braided. It's braided for most of the year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-Toothed Comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is hardly ever loose. I'm trying to grow long hair and studies can be tasking, so for now I'm a protective style freak. However, I don't neglect my hair while in protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I first went natural I was as clueless as could be. I used to wash my hair with bathing soap because I didn't realise I needed to care for short hair just the same way I cared for long hair, so my tiny hair then was breaking like crazy. All the breakage ended when I started to use shampoo and deep conditioner. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisturize! And deep condition! And sleep with a satin scarf or pillow! Just show your hair love. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Chinwe Juliet aka Igbocurls across social media and I am from Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4b & 4c which is a mix of kinks and coils.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural sometime during the summer of 2011 after I received a scalp injury from a relaxer. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? When I started out, my biggest problem was learning how to get my hair soft and combing it but when I later found out, everything was smooth sailing from there. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I try to wash my hair every 2weeks and it could be anytime during the week. All I do is pre-poo with my favorite Extra Virgin Olive oil or a moisturizer like As I am CocoShea spray, shampoo, deep condition, ACV Rinse, Leave-in Conditioner, add a hair butter and seal it all in with oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't moisturize my hair daily but rather, every 2-3 days and most times my hair is already in a protective style so all I need to do is spray on my favorite hair spritz ( Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier) and I'm out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Every night I simply tie a satin/silk scarf and go to sleep. If I have to restyle my hair, I take down my style and re-moisturize with a good leave in conditioner, hair butter and seal with an oil. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I hardly use heat. I've been natural for almost 5 years and I've used heat to blowout my hair just 4 times. Heat is not a necessity for natural hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? Yes I do braid my hair myself. Most times, twice a year with different colors because it's the safest way to do so without actually damaging your hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither. My fingers are best. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly in Creative protective styles since I live in a very hot country. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I've had so many hair mistakes lol! But thankfully non of them were damaging to my hair. I remember one time, I had to go to work with onion bits stuck in my hair for days! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? It's all about your ends! You can't retain length or have long hair if your natural hair is constantly breaking. Pay extra attention to your ends when you moisturize and deep condition and always protect them by wearing styles that keep them hidden. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Benedicta Odekanmi, I'm from Ibadan, Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? My Hair Type is 4b/4c but mostly 4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started my Natural Hair Journey April 2013. I decided this was best for me because my hair never really relaxed. It puffed up after about a week. I wanted to try something different. I transitioned and I'm still transitioning. My relaxed end fell off mostly because I wasn't into healthy natural hair journey for about a year. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I think it was finding out for myself how to take care of my hair. I did a lot of Google searches. Google is my best friend lol. 5. What is your weekly regimen? It depends on my hairstyle. If I have braids or faux loc on, it would be the same as the daily regimen. If it's just my natural hair. It would be co-washing, moisturizing or protein deep conditioning and tea rinse/beer rinse. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regimen is spraying from my spray bottle a mixture of water, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and other oils, Aloe Vera gel and Leave In conditioner. I follow with Oiling with my Oil Mix and sealing with my Shea butter mix I make myself. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My daily night regimen is to spraying with water and oiling before bunning my hair. Then I put on satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I do. When I do straw curls. This is about 3 times a year. I air dry every other time.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I braid my hair about 4 times a year with extensions. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb sometimes. This is when I have to go to the salon and have someone else do my hair. Other times I finger detangle. Denman brush is when I want to have slick edges. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly loose. I seldom do protective hair dos. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I would say this happens everytime I try something new that doesn't come out well. I just resolve into packing the hair in an interesting style. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Oiling. I love natural and essentials oils on my hair. Oiling helps to strengthen the hair strands and prevent split ends. I use mostly Coconut Oil, Palm Kernel Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Amla oil, Neem oil, Grape Seed Oil, Hempseed oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Tea tree oil. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Dorcas also known as Curious Curls and I’m of Nigerian descent, born and raised in London, England but currently living in Toronto. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a mixture of all the type 4s. Everything from 4a – 4c. The sides of my hair are predominantly 4c, while my crown and back are a mix of 4a/4b.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My last relaxer was in May 2011 and I did a long term transition for 22 months. I big chopped in February 2013 & did a second big chop in November 2013 and sported a TWA. I went natural because I had been relaxed for so long I had no idea what my natural hair looked like. I was simply curious (thus the name Curious Curls). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The adjustment in my regimen. I had a pretty solid relaxed hair care regimen and had to re learn how to care for my natural hair. The last time I had been natural my mother was the person who cared for my hair. So it really was the first time in my life I was learning how to handle my own natural hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I’ve currently made some tweaks in my regimen as I am trying to achieve maximum growth but overall it is simple. I wash and deep condition (under a hooded dryer) weekly. I finger detangle in the shower and follow up with my leave-in, oil (Jamaican Black Castor Oil) and shea butter to twist. If I’m wearing a wash and go then I used a gel on top of my leave-in and oil instead of the shea butter to twist. I’ve also incorporated Jamaican Black Castor Oil and scalp massages on a weekly basis to stimulate growth. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I simply fluff and go. If my hair needs a bit of moisture I use a moisturizing spray or hair milk and seal with oil and then put it up in a puff. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Not much, I don’t retwist, I simply sleep on a satin pillowcase. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? When I wear a wash and go I often will diffuse my hair to speed up the process and I have done a blowout. But since my second big chop I’ve never straightened my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I do braid my hair, usually box braids with extensions. I would say I do so about 4 times a year. Often times when I'm going on a vacation/trip or just need a break from my hair I'll get braids installed. I'm a bit weary of getting braids since my last installation caused a bit of breakage but I do plan on doing it in the future with some precautions during the installation process. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither, I opt for my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Most of the time it is loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I wouldn’t call it a tragedy but I got a set of box braids that were installed without the stylist caring for my ends. She was rough when installing them so when I took them down I had so many split and rough ends. I had to get a pretty significant trim to remedy the damage which was a bummer. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keep it moisturized, don’t skip your trims and deep condition often. Honestly doing those 3 things is when I see the biggest difference in my hair. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name Zainab and I am from Lagos Nigeria 2. What is your hair type? Well my hair is a mixture of 4a. 4b and 4c. but mostly consists of 4c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to return natural in early September, I made this decision because I wanted curls, I wondered why so many black females in America had really pretty curls and I didn’t, and as long as I cold remember, I have been relaxed all my life so I decided to try it. I had my big chop September 18 2013, just a few days before my 18th birthday 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural when I first did was trying to get my hair to look like that of those on you tube with 3b and c hair type. Trying to get curls which weren’t mine. It was quite challenging till finally did more research and learnt more about my hair texture and embraced it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen when I am not on protective styles is to co wash every Wednesday and deep condition every weekend. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regimen consists of me spritzing my hair with my hair mix which consists mainly of water, lavender, tea tree, peppermint and lemon oil, followed by a carrier oil and cocoa butter. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I spritz my hair with my mix and them massage my hair with castor and peppermint oil to stimulate hair growth and to keep my edges safe, then I tie on my silk scarf or just lay on my satin pillowcase when I am too tired. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Not since I returned natural, no.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I braid my hair every month, usually cornrows which I make myself and then I put on wigs or tie turbans. I braid my hair about 335 days a year. lol 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both. All depends on what I feel like doing and how much I want to detangle. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Usually in a protective do. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes!! I did once. I wanted to wear the Ghana weaving cornrow style and I wanted her to start from my edges, she held my edges so tight about 30 strands of hair was pulled out. I was really sad and devastated I had to tell her to loosen it and then try something else. I recovered from it by massaging castor oil it every night and day till it grew back. it didn’t even take up to 3 months and I was relived. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is moisture and protective styles. When your hair is rightly moisturized and in a protective style at the same time, you get to retain so much length and health. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Whitney Madueke. I am from Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? I have your good old, 4c hair.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural 2 years ago – March 13th 2013, after almost a year of no relaxer. I stopped relaxing on June 20th 2012. I was really bored of my relaxed hair. I always love changing up my hair and at the same time, Tumblr had this obsession with natural hair, which I loved. It was so diverse in its many forms and so I wanted to be a part of that; its beauty and diversity. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Trying to find what works for me best. It takes a good amount of research, patience and perseverance. That’s what I like about being natural. It involves you knowing yourself – your hair and its needs; how it works; and accepting your hair for its own features. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen is usually to deep condition my hair using Organics by Africas Best Olive Oil Deep Conditioner, Shea Moistures Deep Treatment Masque or Organics Root Stimulator Hair Mayo; these are protein and moisture treatments. I decide on which to use or I mix my protein and moistures together. After which I wash off and stretch out my hair using three strand braids or I style as I please. I air dry after applying my hair products – jojoba oil, tea tree oil, coconut oil or olive oil and Indian hemp. See here:
6. What is your daily morning regimen?
I either wash my hair using my V05 Alberto conditioner, or I simply dampen my hair in the shower or if I have a twistout or style done; I just let it be and moisturize if need be. This year I am trying to keep my hair stretched as much as possible, compared to last year when I always had my shrinkage afro, but now that my hair is growing longer keeping it stretched prevents tangles and knots. Then, my daily routine would be to wash after every 1-2 days with my V05 or just dampen it, apply products – jojoba oil and Indian hemp, then let air dry. I have an example below:
7. What is your daily night time regimen?
I don’t really have one. I am trying to develop one. But if I have a style done eg twistout, I would either put it in a bun or two or in bantu knots – whatever keeps it stretched at night. But for the most part, I just sleep with a satin/silk scarf, that’s my night routine. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Only if I need to straighten it or blow dry. I air dry like 99% of the time. As its just convenient and healthy. For a good stretch, twist outs, braid outs, low buns, a good brush through on stretched hair works fine for me. Most times, the hairstyles I do don’t need heat. I rotate between braids, wigs, scarves or stretched hairstyles.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I loveee braids, even while relaxed. I do it as much as I can. In the UK, I hardly unless its done on my way to UK from Nigeria, as here braids are quite costly and to do them myself is time consuming. I do it once or twice. Back in Nigeria, I get braids done every holiday for my hairs protection – Christmas, Easter, and Summer. Or at any point I feel my hair needs to relax from all my manipulation. I do braids over 3-5 times a year, in Lagos. Its super cheap. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither. I rather finger comb. My hair is better off with my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? 50/50. I youtube a lot, so I need my hair out for tutorials on my channel – Leazz Way. When my hair gets tired of all the manipulation, I go into braids or wigs. It helps my hair grow alottt. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Not really. I remember having seriously dry hair from neglecting my hair under my wig . I couldn’t combat it with deep conditioning overnight; hot oil treatments, and conditioning. I knew if after these methods and it didn’t revive my hair the only thing left would be to steam. I had to get braids done that same day so it was perfect; I deep conditioned using the products I mentioned above, while steaming at the salon. It kicked in so much moisture into my hair. Since then, steaming is my everything. I try to incorporate it as much as possible. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Have a good hair routine. That way you are constantly (regularly) feeding your hair with the right things for its growth and health. Also it helps you keep track of what your hair likes and doesn’t. Simply makes your hair journey a lot easier. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hello Beauties!! My name is Rosemary and I am from London with Nigerian background. 2. What is your hair type? I have beautiful 4C/4B hair.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in April 2014. I transitioned for about a year. I had enough of the two textures and really wanted to experience being natural. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? To me it was so different. I had never handled my natural hair myself before so it was so new to me. I think I was most self conscious about how short and different it was at the initial stages. Now I know that it is the best decision I have ever made for my hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I am actually experimenting with the “water only” regimen. This means that instead of using commercial products, you just use water and oils. It has been about 3 months, I am loving it so far and I think it may be a keeper. The problem I had with products is that they gave me an itchy scalp – my scalp is sensitive so it is working for me. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends really. Lately I have been having my hair in mini twists so in the morning before work I will just style them. I pretty much put my hair into a style and go when my hair is loose. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I feel that to save time a good night time routine is key. Even if it means refreshing with water before retwisting/rebraiding to maintain the stretch. This is pretty much what I do. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use indirect heat from my hooded dryer for a style like Curlformers.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Whenever I feel like it I will do mini twists with my natural hair. I am not really a fan of extensions and such, I know my scalp will not like it and I prefer doing things with my hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I finger detangle only now but if I had to chose I would say wide tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? A bit of both. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Back in 2010 when I allowed a ‘friend’ at the time to overprocess my hair with relaxer. I transitioned to texturised hair and definitely learnt never to let anyone do my hair again. I started doing my hair myself and what I learnt is that I am the only one who really knows what I want for my hair and who truly cares about its health! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I have a few: Keep it simple! All the product junkie business it really not worth it. Choose products that your hair likes and stick with them. Also, be gentle with your hair, love it and it will love you back. Lastly, embrace the beautiful kinks that God blessed you with. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Zara! I’m Nigerian but I was born and raised in the U.S.A. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is mostly 4a. I have 4b at the crown of my head and close to my ears. The front of my head is mostly 4a with some strands between a 4a and 3c. I have a few strands that exhibit heat damage! I’ll be getting rid of those as my hair continues to grow. My hair is very dense but the strands are fine. I think it is low-medium porosity, I know it is protein sensitive, and it prefers to be treated with natural products. My elasticity is normal and my natural hair color is a deep brown with a reddish sort of gleam (in sunlight).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Okay… this is a story! In about middle school, my mom really dove into caring for my hair and my sister’s hair. My hair flourished and got quite long by the time I was in high school. When I was about 15, my mom was busy and couldn’t do my relaxer so she let one of our family members do it. Long story short… the relaxer was left in for far too long. No matter how much I cried for it to be washed out… I was replied to with a forceful “NO”. My hair was pretty severely damaged. It was thin and lifeless. In an effort to revive my hair, I started looking at relaxed hair videos on YouTube. That was when I discovered the concept of natural hair. As I got distracted by the many videos of beautiful women with hair that was just as beautiful, I asked myself why I even relaxed. It was just something I did… I didn’t have to and I realized that I didn’t care to. This was in November of 2008. I had decided that I would embark on a natural hair journey. No more relaxers for this head! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing I faced was learning how to care for my hair. I can be pretty lazy and though my hair has gotten really long, I feel that I could have at least 6 more inches if I had known what I was doing 100% of the time. I have learned a great deal and now I know what my hair requires to grow. Another challenge is being patient! Sometimes I get frustrated when I am doing my hair and I rush through processes that should be done gently. I love my hair and I want to see it flourish so now I take my time more and I avoid manipulating it as much. When I am combatting my impatience, protective styling helps A LOT! It allows me to (kind of) forget my hair for a bit (aside form moisturizing and general maintenance). These two challenges are pretty much tied for first place, haha. 5. What is your weekly regimen? If you guys want to see what I do in detail, check out our YouTube channel. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I adjust whatever style I was wearing the day before. If my hair is feeling dry, I will moisturize it again but I tend to avoid too much maintenance. It makes life easier! When I do protective style I spray my water and conditioner mix then seal with my Wild Growth Hair Oil. I avoid washing my hair with braids and twists but I wash weekly or every other week when I have a sew-in. I will probably start washing every two to three weeks with my braids (depending on how much cleansing I need and how much moisture my hair is craving). 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually just put on my nightcap and call it a day. I will occasionally re-twist my hair but that is rare! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I used to blow dry my hair prior to protective styling but I’ve decided to completely eliminate heat from my regimen! I experienced a bit of heat damage over the course of a few months. Though my hair is now back on track, this stunted my growth a bit so I’m currently about two inches from MBL (Mid-back length). I will soon demonstrate ways to stretch the hair without heat (on my YouTube channel).
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? I do! My hair is actually in twists, crochet braids, under a wig, or in some other protective style about 7-8 months out of the year (because I’m a student). My coursework is extremely rigorous and allows me little time to enjoy hair grooming. I really enjoy my hair during the summer time because I have a lot more freedom to do what my hair loves when I have that additional time. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? DENMAN! I use a wide tooth very occasionally. I prefer the Denman because its quick and effective but I really need to modify it so it doesn’t pull out unnecessary hair! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Typically in a protective hair-do but I often long for it to be free! 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? MY HEAT DAMAGE! It was very mild regarding how it affected my curls but it did thin my hair quite a bit. That was the worst part. It’s thickened back up significantly and eliminating heat from my regimen has proved to be the greatest thing I could do to help my hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Avoid heat! Also, be sure to moisturize! I’m protein sensitive so I don’t really focus on adding too much protein to my regimen. If you are not protein sensitive, be sure to balance protein and moisture levels. Also… Listen to your hair! Get to know what your hair likes and doesn’t like! Get to know the rhythms of your mane and do what you can to keep it healthy. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is P.A., and I’m literally from all over. I was born in Nigeria, lived in over 13 countries before the age of 10, but spent the majority of that time in England. I currently live in Virginia, but most of my family resides in Texas. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is a mixture of 3c, 4a, 4b, and 4c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My last relaxer was on May 4, 2013 (yay!). My choice to go natural was a practical one —relaxers ate through my scalp and left it bleeding with sores. Since I actually like my scalp, I decided that not using relaxers was in my best interest. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Honestly, the most challenging thing was perception—perception of myself and others’ perception of me. When you get used to a certain look (my mother put relaxers in my hair at the age of 8), you associate a part of yourself with that look. It was a daunting thing to have to imagine myself without what I considered my “norm.” Plus, since I’m an attorney, I worried that people would make disparaging remarks about my hair at the office. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen changes depending on what I’m doing with my hair (e.g., leaving my hair out, wearing braids, etc.). Typically, I pre-poo, shampoo with a natural, mild shampoo (I love Shea Moisture!), and follow up with a deep conditioner. After I wash that out, I follow the LOC or LCO method and style. Since I’m protein sensitive, I only do a protein treatment once a month, or right after I take out my braids and my hair needs some strengthening. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Since I like to wear styles that will last me all week (or almost all week) or longer (e.g., protective styles), my morning routine generally consists of spritzing my hair with water/leave-in conditioner, and sealing with an oil or butter (my hair LOVES coconut oil and Shea butter!), then leaving my hair alone. If I’m wearing braids (I mostly wear crochet braids), I’m sure to moisturize any exposed hair and massage my scalp with a light oil. My hair is low porosity. So for me, my focus is maintaining moisture, as products tend to sit on top of my strands. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Again, it depends on what I’m doing with my hair, but it typically is the same as my morning routine. Since I’m usually trying to preserve a style, I’ll sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I haven’t used direct heat on my hair in over a year, but I’m not opposed to it as long as it’s properly done (e.g., appropriate temperature, use of heat protectants, etc.). I do use indirect heat on low during deep conditioning treatments (to open up my strands’ cuticles) or if the style I need to set is taking an extremely long time to dry (wet hair for prolonged periods of time isn’t that healthy for your strands either!).
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year? Single or box braids—not often. But crochet braids—YES!! This is my go-to protective style and, really, cornrows are the extent of the braiding. I don’t have the patience, or the time, to sit for 7 hours or more for traditional braids, but I do love the versatility you can get with crochet braids. I’d say I wear my hair in crochet braids for at least half the year. Winters are really drying to my already dry low porosity strands, and I find that keeping my hair in crochet braids for 4 – 6 weeks helps me retain moisture so much better during these months! 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Hmmm...depends. Wide tooth comb for detangling when I’m about to cornrow my hair . . . Denman brush for defining curls. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I’d say half-in-half. Since it is winter right now, my hair has been chilling in protective styles (no pun intended—actually pun intended lol, I’m a goof). 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? This really isn’t a tragedy per se, but it does point to the necessity for patience when taking out crochet braids. At one point, I was using bulk hair that looked almost identical to my hair, and I accidentally cut off the tail of a cornrow. :-/ Luckily, it was in an inconspicuous spot and the rest of my hair covered it up until the area grew back out. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Patience, moisture, and consistency. Oh, did I mention patience? Lol 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
