1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Whitney Patterson from Houston, Texas. 2. What is your hair type? 4A
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
My natural hair journey began in November 2009. I was tired of my hair breaking off. It seemed to be getting thinner and shorter by the week. My original intention was to do the big chop and wear a wig or a sew-in until it grew out to a decent length, but it ended up looking cute so I rocked it. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I had no idea what to do with my hair. I didn’t know that I needed to moisturize it, detangle it, etc. I had a perm at an extremely early age. Also, there weren't a large selection of natural hair products available in stores which made finding the right products challenging. 5. What is your weekly regimen? By now I have my hair regimen down to a science. First, I pre-poo with Sporty Afros Ayurvedic oil for 15 - 30 minutes. Then, I wash my hair with Nothing But Clarifying shampoo. Next, I deep condition with Nothing But Intense Healing Mask. I detangle my hair while it has conditioner on it. Then, I let the conditioner sit for an hour. After I rinse it out, I moisturize my hair with Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing Spray and Obia Naturals Curl Moisture Cream. Then, I add a bit of Obia Naturals Curling Custard and let it air dry. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning, I spray my hair down with Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing spray. I focus most on the sections where the curls got messed up over night. After my hair is thoroughly dampened, I apply Obia Naturals Curl Moisture Cream, a bit of organic coconut oil and then I shingle my hair with a little bit of Obia Naturals Curling Custard to set the curls. Lastly, I scrunch my hair and let it air dry while I get ready. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I put my hair in a high, loose ponytail or pineapple and sleep on a satin pillow case. Occasionally during the week, I will add a few drops Sporty Afros Ayurvedic oil to my scalp and ends. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat sparingly. I use a blow dryer occasionally but only on low.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Not often. I haven't braided my hair in 3 years. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I actually prefer using my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Since my second big chop, I have been wearing it loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? In high school, I got my hair bra strap length hair professionally colored and it broke off. It was a little shorter than chin length. It was an extremely traumatizing experience. After it broke, I wore it in an awkward bob for a while until I got a cute hair cut. Then, I started wearing sew ins. I wore those for a few years and my hair started breaking again, that’s when I decided to go natural. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Figure out a regimen that works for your hair type and lifestyle and stick to it! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube)

I love your TWA. I'm glad you share the story about how dyeing your hair lead to breakage. Lots of people take hair color very lightly when really it can be damaging if not used correctly. Comments are closed.
