Queen Elle ~ Queen Of Kinks, Curls & Coils® (Neno Natural)

22/8/2015

1. What's your name and where are you from?

You can call me Elle, and I am a military brat so I've lived a little bit of everywhere but I grew up mostly in the DMV (California, USA).

2. What is your hair type?

I have quite a few hair types actually. The back of my head is majority 4a, the areas in the middle are heat damaged (that's a hair type right? lol)  and toward the front is 3c/4a as well.

3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?

I went "natural" technically without even knowing it. I had relaxers a couple of times in high school but never maintained them and just let them grow out. I consciously made a decision to alter how I styled my hair in 2010. For me, the DC summers were HORRENDOUS for straight hair so I decided to eliminate heat and see what would happen.

4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing about going natural was learning how to style my hair without the use of heat. When I finally did discover flat irons I was so heat dependent. That was really all I knew and was the one thing I could do very well. So learning how to use rollers, and perm rods was something very new to me. In the very beginning I looked a hot mess, lol.

5. What is your weekly regimen?

I wash, deep condition and style my hair on a weekly basis. I used to stretch my hair for two weeks at a time but I found that washing weekly is much better for my hair .

6. What is your daily morning regimen?

Depending on what style I have I will usually spritz my hair lightly with water in the morning and go about my day. If I've smashed any of my curls over night I will use a small amount of product on the end to reshape my curls.

7. What is your daily night time regimen?

As soon as I get home I pineapple my curls with a silk scarf! Simple and easy!

8. Do you use heat on your hair at all?

Yes, I definitely use heat on my hair but only when I am getting my hair trimmed. Unfortunately, I trust no one to cut my hair in it's curly state. And sometimes I just get an itch to wear my hair straight and let it blow in the wind lol.

9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?

I rarely have my hair in braided styles. My hair is already so long that adding more hair on top of that is a little crazy for me. I did have marley twists in 2014 and I LOVED them!

10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush?

Denman brush alll the way! I only use a wide tooth comb for parting.

11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do?

I normally wear my hair out, my go-to style are two strand twists with the ends finger coiled. I tried to do more protective styling but its just not in my cards lol.

12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?

OHHHH YESS! Tragedy that was done by me lol. I didn't flat iron or blow dry my hair for two years and in that time my hair grew from shoulder length to mid back length. That first time I straightened my hair after those two years I was addicted. I got so many compliments that I fell in love again with my straight hair and fried it like to no other. I had SEVERE heat damage that 2 years later I am still recovering from.

13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair?

The secret to it all is..................... Learn your hair!

I know that sounds crazy but the only way you can do anything for your hair if if you know it. Inside and out! When I finally learned how to care for my hair it did things I never thought it could do before. I stopped relying on what other people did and just did my own thing.
