1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Georgette Whaley. Some people call me "Soul Sister." I was born & raised in Houston,Texas. 2. What is your hair type? As odd as it may sound I've never classified my hair with the hair type system. I just call it natural. :-) [For the purposes of having you come up in a category I've ticked 4A/B/C, Heather xx]
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in 1994. I did what is now referred to as "The Big Chop." I went to a barber and got my relaxed hair all cut off. I had about a millimeter of hair! I decided to stop relaxing my hair & return to my natural texture because my hair started falling out from being over processed. I was also curious about what my own hair texture was because my hair was relaxed when I was about 5 years old. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I faced the biggest challenges in the very beginning of my journey. Things like lack of knowledge on how to care for my hair and finding the right products (or combination of products) were my biggest obstacles. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I try to manipulate my hair as little as possible. So I don't have a weekly regimen. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Remove my satin cap and fluff my hair or moisturize it if I feel it needs it. I'll add a headband and/or flower depending on the overall look I want for that day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I always sleep with my satin cap (or scarf) on and a satin pillowcase. Even when I travel and have to stay in a hotel I bring my satin pillowcase with me. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only heat I use is under a hooded dryer to dry my hair, if I don't let it air dry, or when I'm doing a deep conditioning treatment. I've only had my hair thermally straightened with a flat iron once. It caused so much damage that I vowed to never straighten it again.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have worn braids with extensions only a few times since I've been natural. I mostly enjoy wearing my hair without any extensions added to it. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I alternate between both. However, I find myself using a wide tooth comb more than my Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? In the summer/warmer months I try to keep it two-strand twisted because it keeps my head cooler. In the colder months I wear more twist-outs and my afro. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes. When I had my hair flat-ironed several years ago. I had severe heat damage and I felt like it took me almost 2 years to get my hair back to a healthy state. I trimmed the damaged areas and did deep conditioning treatments regularly to help my hair recover from the trauma. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Leave your hair alone! I think that we touch, pull and tug on our hair way more than is necessary. I find that when I wear my hair in low manipulation styles it grows like weeds. Also, find what works for you and stick with it. We are deluged with information from YouTube, blogs and social media. There are some people with super long hair and it's easy to covet their tresses! Be thankful for what God gave YOU and enjoy the journey! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
