1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Kelly Manick. I'm originally from Hollis, Queens, NY, I've lived in South Carolina for about 10 years, now I'm currently in Atlanta, GA. 2. What is your hair type? I have 4B/4C type hair
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I originally went natural in 1997 because I started locking my hair, I had tried just about every color cut and style while relaxed. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing then was waiting for it to grow, now it's finding the right products that work well. 5. What is your weekly regimen? When not in a protective style I co wash with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, and use a mixed oil, i.e. jojoba, almond oil, castor oil, olive oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? When not in a protective style I usually untwist my 2 strands and do a top bun,(I rarely wear a twist out, never get good definition) or top & bottom bun 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I use my Kimmaytube leave-in conditioner recipe, in mine it's Cantu Shea Butter Leave in, aloe vera juice, castor oil, jojoba oil and water in a spray bottle, followed by a spray oil mix and 2 strand, or I'll do the African threading method because I get a lot of shrinkage. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do not use heat AT ALL, my hair doesn't respond well.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do a combination of braid styles, most times with hair added. Usually a puffy twist or kink twist variaton, I may do box braids (micros) maybe once a year or every other year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both a wide-toothed comb and a Denman. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally in a protective style
12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it?
My hair tragedy occurred when I decided to pick out my locs in 2010, I had locs for 11 years, they were waist length, my hair was just below shoulder length and with 4C hair not having a comb run through for that length of time I was pretty tender headed. I get the bright idea to put in a texturizer (mind you, this is before I discovered all the wonderful transitioning videos on YouTube). My hair went bone straight! Later in the month, my hair started to break off, so I did micros, genie locs and other various protective styles until it grew back. I didn't learn my lesson so I went full fledged creamy crack! My hair broke off AGAIN, straight down the middle. After going through another set of micros, genie locs, etc, I finally settled to just let it go, it's been 2 1/2 years since! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy/long hair is MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE! I also implore anyone to be gentle with detangling and find the right products for YOU, never mind what's trendy. 14. Where can we find you online?
