1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Leslie, but I’m known as Kinky Curly Beauty and I’m located in Birmingham, Alabama. 2. What is your hair type? I typically don’t like to be categorized into a hair type. But if I had to state a type I’d fall between 3C and 4A.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
This is actually my third and final time returning to my Natural texture. This last time it was because of premature greying. I had to choose between permanent hair coloring and relaxers, and as many have noticed, I chose the permanent colors. :) 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The only challenge that I notice is that many of us revert our hair back to its natural state but our mindsets remain in a “relaxed” state. It takes us a while to love what we were born with because our mindsets are often still chemically treated. [Heather comment: I love this - so true] I often tell women that in preparing to return to your natural texture, you must also renew your mind...change how you think about your hair’s natural texture. Learn to love who God created you to be. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I use a think moisturizing cream/pudding and seal with oil daily...sometimes twice daily (morning and night). 6. What is your daily morning regimen? It depends on how my hair is styled. If it's loose I apply a leave-in, moisturizer and my sealant oil every morning. If it's in a protective style I'll spray my leave-in/oil concoction in the air and walk under it to naturally catch the needed mists. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Most times I do the same things at night that I do for my hair in the mornings. If I'm wearing a Twistout/Braidout I apply the previous mentioned products and twist or braid the hair in chunks. Chunky twists/braids promote "big hair". If I'm wearing a protective style I stand under the spray of my leave-in/oil concoction to catch the most then tie my hair with a satin or silk scarf and head to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I’ve used minimal medium hand dryer heat twice in nearly three years. Typically all of my styles are air-dried or created from old twist-outs/braid-outs.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair often, but I don’t use extension hair...only my natural hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. I use the Denman only in the shower and the wide-tooth comb to style normally. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Because I like to change my hair up quite a bit, it’s often loose but I do protective styles often also...I just don’t keep them long. My hair is never in the same style long. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Fortunately I haven’t. But with Natural hair, if you have a few bobby pins, a spray bottle, and some gel, it’s easy to recover from a bad hair day. But to prevent a hair tragedy, carefully detangle, watch for thin/broken ends, trim your ends periodically, moisturize and seal in your moisturize with an oil! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip to our Natural Community would be to moisturize daily and to retain moisture it’s a must that we seal with an oil sealant...I can't repeat this enough. Our hair is like a plant, without water it dries up and dies/breaks, but when watered and moisturized it has a tendency to grow like weeds! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
