1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Onyinyechi, virtually known as ‘Nikki Butterscotch’. I am a Nigerian natural living in Birmingham, UK at the moment. 2. What is your hair type? To be candid, I don't hair-type anymore, I used to at the beginning of my hair journey but it wasn't helping me in terms of caring for my hair. Knowing that my hair is non-porous, very dense, very coily with mostly fine medium strands is more useful information to me.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
The first time I went natural was in 2009, I transitioned for 7 months and I went natural because 2 of my friends were natural at the time. The thought of being free from relaxers really appealed to me and I thought why not give it a try. I didn't last though, because I knew very little about natural hair care and I relaxed in September 2010. my hair started breaking off right after that and I decided I was going try a second time. I started researching info about natural hair care, discovered a lot of blogs, YT channels and my friends who were natural gave me tips as well. In march 2011, I chopped it all off and I love my hair now, can’t have it any other way. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The dryness, it was intense yo!!! lol. it still is, but I can manage that now. As my hair got longer I began to battle with detangling my hair but I am good now. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don't really have a weekly regimen; if my hair is not in extensions I co-wash. If my hair is in extensions, I clean my scalp with lemon juice, apple cider vinegar or witch hazel, which ever is available, and a cotton pad. I shampoo and deep condition (moisturizing and protein) when there is need. All I do really is listen to my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I spray my hair with aloe vera juice every morning and seal sometimes with castor or coconut oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I cover my hair with a satin bonnet or scarf and go to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don't. I don't see the need for it.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braids and twists with extension, usually 4 to 6 times a year and I have them in for 3-6 weeks depending on how my hair and I feel. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb and my fingers at the moment. I have used a Denman brush in the past and it wasn't bad, still had to use a wide tooth comb first though. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly in protective styles really for my sanity. I only have my hair loose when I have an event or I just really want to play with it. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Trimming my hair (myself) is always always a tragedy lol. I always cut off more than I need to. I recover after a day or two because right after I trim I do kinky twists. [Check out my trimming tutorial Chica! Heather x] 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? To maintain healthy hair, my personal tip would be keep calm and moisturize with Aloe Vera juice. 14. Where can we find you online? Beautiful hair! Where do you get aloe vera juice from? Or how is it done? I'm in Ghana and I haven't seen it in any of the shops here.
