1. What's your name and where are you from?
I am Chadel Mathurin from the beautiful island of St.Lucia, which is part of the Caribbean archipelago. 2. What is your hair type? I am not a huge proponent of the hair typing system as I think our hair is too diverse to ever fall into one limited grouping; however, I fall into the type 4 range. A little 4a, mostly 4b and 4c strands.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I began my transition to natural hair from relaxer on March 26th 2011, after getting relaxers for about 1.5 years; and I big chopped on August 26th, 2011. Long story short about what made me do it…. when I put a relaxer in my hair, I stated that I was conducting a “social experiment”… I wanted to measure whether men in St.Lucia were more attracted to long flowy hair as opposed to natural hair that refused to show its true length. (The whole colourism phenomenon). So I pretty much always knew I would be growing out my hair when my social experiment was done. Besides, I began missing my natural hair and its diversity. Relaxed hair lacked personality and was boring for me and those scalp burns were not the truth! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Nothing really. I had been natural most of my life; I was just excited to start fresh and I saw every stage as a new adventure. 5. What is your weekly regimen? This is such a broad question. Despite this, most of my regimen is done on wash day. I prepoo weekly before I wash my hair; usually on the same day as my wash day. With my prepoo, I may start out by spraying my ACV mix to my scalp to begin to lift the dirt that has accumulated. I then apply a liberal amount of coconut oil or olive oil to my strands to protect against hygral fatigue. With respect to washing, I wash once a week, either on a Saturday or Sunday. Currently, I alternate between using the As I Am Coconut Cowash and a Shampoo. After my wash is complete, I almost ALWAYS deep condition my hair. I alternate between an elasticity treatment and a moisture-infusing deep conditioner, usually doing an elasticity treatment at least once a month. I (mostly) finger detangle under running water with a moisturizing conditioner and I twist my hair into the already present sections and allow it to air dry. With respect to my moisture regimen, after my hair is about 70% dry, I apply my leave in conditioner, followed by oil based product and then a cream- The LOC method. I usually twist right after since twists dry quicker. I remoisturise on the third day after wash day. What I use is dependent on how my hair feels and what it needs. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regimen usually consists of taking my hair down if I retwisted or re-plaited the night before. I am not a morning person so I keep it quite simple. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My daily night time regimen would involve placing my hair into four huge twists or plaits to refresh my definition. On the 3rd day after wash day, I may need to add some water and seal with an oil just to add a little bit more moisture to my hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I am not very big on heat, and my hair does not seem too keen on it either. However, I will use a blow dryer once in a while, especially if I resort to washing my hair very late at night. I blow dry about 4-6 times for the year if so many, using the tension method.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair. I probably put in jumbo marley twists in three times for the year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Both. Depending on what the desired end result is. I very rarely use tools, however, if I am doing a style which requires my hair to be thoroughly detangled, or I am blowdrying, I may use a wide toothed comb. I save the denman brush for the rare occasions when I care to have NO tangle in site, or if I decide to flat iron. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I haven’t had any major hair tragedy that I can think of. The event that comes the closest though, was color treating my hair. My hair refused to be soothed into accepting moisture and the roughness was evident. To deal with this, I simply cut out the colour. A mini chop first, and a series of trims after. Recently as well, my scalp reacted to the installment of synthetic hair and bruised up and itched quite a bit. This is as close to a tragedy as I have experienced. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is to maintain a healthy lifestyle overall.. eat nutritious food, manage your emotions, sleep, be gentle with your hair , use products with great ingredients and deep condition. 14. 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Chinwe Juliet aka Igbocurls across social media and I am from Nigeria. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4b & 4c which is a mix of kinks and coils.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural sometime during the summer of 2011 after I received a scalp injury from a relaxer. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? When I started out, my biggest problem was learning how to get my hair soft and combing it but when I later found out, everything was smooth sailing from there. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I try to wash my hair every 2weeks and it could be anytime during the week. All I do is pre-poo with my favorite Extra Virgin Olive oil or a moisturizer like As I am CocoShea spray, shampoo, deep condition, ACV Rinse, Leave-in Conditioner, add a hair butter and seal it all in with oil. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't moisturize my hair daily but rather, every 2-3 days and most times my hair is already in a protective style so all I need to do is spray on my favorite hair spritz ( Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier) and I'm out the door. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Every night I simply tie a satin/silk scarf and go to sleep. If I have to restyle my hair, I take down my style and re-moisturize with a good leave in conditioner, hair butter and seal with an oil. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I hardly use heat. I've been natural for almost 5 years and I've used heat to blowout my hair just 4 times. Heat is not a necessity for natural hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes I do braid my hair myself. Most times, twice a year with different colors because it's the safest way to do so without actually damaging your hair. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither. My fingers are best. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly in Creative protective styles since I live in a very hot country. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I've had so many hair mistakes lol! But thankfully non of them were damaging to my hair. I remember one time, I had to go to work with onion bits stuck in my hair for days! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? It's all about your ends! You can't retain length or have long hair if your natural hair is constantly breaking. Pay extra attention to your ends when you moisturize and deep condition and always protect them by wearing styles that keep them hidden. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Chelsea Williams and I’m from Maryland. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural several times before sticking with it. My most recent big chop was during the summer of 2012. I decided to go natural because I was tired of spending so much money on weaves. I was also curious as to what my natural curl pattern looked like. Sadly, I had never seen it before. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was learning how to retain length and moisture. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I don’t shampoo or co-wash my hair weekly. I do twist-outs in between my shampooing and co-washing. You can find a break down of my current hair care routine on my website. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I take down my “pineapple” and fluff! Sometimes I will mist - and I do mean mist - my hair with a rose water and vegetable glycerin mix. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I pineapple my hair and cover it with a satin scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I use heat on my hair. I use heat on my hair after I shampoo or co-wash.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
No, I do not braid my hair. My hair gets too tangled, and I end up having to trim my ends. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. I’ve never tried using a denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. I’ll occasionally wear my hair in a high puff or ponytail. I don’t wear my hair up often though as I am prone to headaches. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve had several “tragedies”! My first hair tragedy was in the summer of 2010. I had already been natural for 9 months. I had always worn protective styles and at that point, I had never learned how to properly care for my natural hair. I became extremely frustrated and decided to go to a local Dominican shop to get a relaxer. I regretted it almost immediately. About a week later, I cut off all my hair again. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? A healthy diet, exercise, and lots of water are the most important ways to maintain healthy hair. Topical products will not be as effective if you do not maintain a proper diet. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Lee-Anne Holder and I’m from the beautiful country of Barbados. 2. What is your hair type? My hair is combination type 4 (i.e. 4a,4b,4c).
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started transitioning on feb 23rd 2012 after my last texturiser and did my first official chop, March 23rd 2013 when I got annoyed dealing with two textures. I honestly decided to go natural because I felt like I literally did all I could do with my hair, relaxer, texturiser, braids, twists and everything in between. I was getting so bored of my hair and the limp texturised state it was in. I also felt that having no recollection of my natural hair, was a bit ridiculous and quite sad. YouTube also played a pivotal role in convincing me to transition. Seeing the diversity of natural hair made it a GO for me. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The stares from the public and their embarrassing questions posed the biggest challenge for me. Not having the confidence, like I do now, made it really difficult for me in the earlier stages. I was really defensive, but now I have come to accept that years of being taught that these things about ourselves are not acceptable, cannot be undone overnight. Oh, and lets not forget the daylong washdays. Sigh, but it gets better. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash and deep condition my hair every Sunday. I set my style for the week and moisturize and retwist when necessary. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I remove my satin headtie, oil my palms and undo my style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I spray my hair with a little water/conditioner mix, then retwist with my choice of moisturizer or gel. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I mostly use heat during my deep conditioning treatment. Since I’m terrified of heat damage. I’m currently trying to practice heatless stretching using braidouts.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, possibly 2-3 times a year. Last year I did yarn locs and a crochet faux hawk. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Denman brush, but modified. I’ve removed like 3 rows of teeth from my brush head. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. As much as I love the convenience of protective hair styles, I really start to miss my hair and the feeling of water on my scalp during my weekly washes. I know washing your hair during protective styling is a must but it’s sooo messy. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Thank God, no! #blessed 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My motto is “Clean Hair is Healthy Hair”. My tip for anyone is to develop and try to stick to a solid hair regimen and in time your hair will thank you for it. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

I had my last relaxer December 29th 2012. I Started taking good care of my hair September 2014. I decided to go natural because I was frustrated with my relax hair. Here is the Youtube video of my natural hair journey:
4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing about going natural was not knowing what to do for my hair. I could not figure out what products works well with my hair or how to style it. And that is why I thank God that now I have found a regimen/products that works well for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair bi weekly. I usually pre-poo, wash, deep condition my hair. Then I will do a braid out, twist out or Bantu knots. I make sure that my style last me a week before I re-style it. Then I will leave my hair in a bun till my next wash. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on how I feel I would wear my hair out or otherwise I will just put it in a bun and go about my day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I would re twist or braid if I have have a special place or occasion but if not I would just put my hair in top loose bun. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do not use heat often. I've only blew out my hair once since I went natural.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair once or twice a year. ( ex: Faux locs) 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I do not like using comb or brush. I finger detangle. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose but I do put it away in a bun as my protective style or faux locs. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh yes. Back in August 2014 I wanted a crochet braids so bad. I went to a salon to install the braids and the lady was combing my hair forcefully, my head was hurting sooooo bad. I had to tell her to stop and that I could not continue with the style, so since then I've been doing my hair myself. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy/long hair is to learn about your hair, take care of it yourself the best way you can. Make sure you eat well, stay healthy, build a steady regimen for your health and hair. And leave your hair alone. Be patient with your hair it will grow!! 14. Where can we find you online? 3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I started my Natural Hair Journey April 2013. I decided this was best for me because my hair never really relaxed. It puffed up after about a week. I wanted to try something different. I transitioned and I'm still transitioning. My relaxed end fell off mostly because I wasn't into healthy natural hair journey for about a year. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I think it was finding out for myself how to take care of my hair. I did a lot of Google searches. Google is my best friend lol. 5. What is your weekly regimen? It depends on my hairstyle. If I have braids or faux loc on, it would be the same as the daily regimen. If it's just my natural hair. It would be co-washing, moisturizing or protein deep conditioning and tea rinse/beer rinse. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regimen is spraying from my spray bottle a mixture of water, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and other oils, Aloe Vera gel and Leave In conditioner. I follow with Oiling with my Oil Mix and sealing with my Shea butter mix I make myself. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My daily night regimen is to spraying with water and oiling before bunning my hair. Then I put on satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I do. When I do straw curls. This is about 3 times a year. I air dry every other time.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair about 4 times a year with extensions. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb sometimes. This is when I have to go to the salon and have someone else do my hair. Other times I finger detangle. Denman brush is when I want to have slick edges. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly loose. I seldom do protective hair dos. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I would say this happens everytime I try something new that doesn't come out well. I just resolve into packing the hair in an interesting style. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Oiling. I love natural and essentials oils on my hair. Oiling helps to strengthen the hair strands and prevent split ends. I use mostly Coconut Oil, Palm Kernel Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Amla oil, Neem oil, Grape Seed Oil, Hempseed oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Tea tree oil. 14. Shatera Taylor and I am from East Orange, NJ 2. What is your hair type? 4c, low porosity
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural (Big Chop) as of 9/15/12. My cousin Ursula encouraged me to do so. She always talked about how beautiful my hair was and how it would be even more flawless if I were to embrace it's natural state. It took several talks before I actually big chopped. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Adjusting to the changes of having hair to no hair. I felt bare in the beginning, always needing to put makeup on and accessorize to avoid that awkward feeling. But after awhile, the journey started to become easier as I accepted my beauty whether with or without hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Sunday wash day (every other Sunday). 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Applying EVOO to my tresses and massaging my scalp. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Big chunkie twistouts using Cantu Shea leave-in (every two days) with a spritz of chilled aloe Vera juice and water (bottled). Massage my edges using Black Jamaican Castor Oil. Then I tie my hair using a fishnet bonnet, satin bonnet and satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, but once every two to three months.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, rarely. Once every three years, if that. I really try to avoid braiding my hair. I love my edges...lol. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It's normally loose. Love my hair out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Prior to my transition, I use to over process my hair by using hair color. Until one day, I discovered the back part of my head was green. Having a professional take care of my hair. Who by the way cut and shaved my hair down (big chop). 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Find a product that works best for your hair and stick to it. Less heat....Clip your ends as often as needed (listen to your hair and respond accordingly and it will love you back?) embrace your own hair journey and be your own hair crush. 14. My name is D. Marie and I am originally from North Carolina. 2. What is your hair type? I have a mixture of hair types. My hair is 4a, 4b,and 4c in some areas.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I first decided to go natural back in 2009. I transitioned for two years then cut off the remaining relaxed ends. I still would wear it straight sometimes because I didn’t know how to do natural styles. I big chopped for the second time back in 2014 because of the breakage that I experienced after going to a salon. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me was to accept my hair for what it is. For a long time I compared my hair to other naturals that I see on social media. I thought that my hair was supposed to look a certain way. Natural hair is so versatile and beautiful in every way. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash my hair once every two weeks with a sulfate-free shampoo and deep condition with any conditioner that I have at the time. Depending on how busy I am I keep my hair in twists until I am headed out to work or out with my honey. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I like to take my time taking out my twists, which is my go to style. I always oil my hands before I take them out. I use coconut oil or olive oil to prevent my hairstyle from frizzing up. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I sleep with a bonnet on. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair from time to time but not too often. I sometime stretch my hair with a blow dryer and style. I sit under my hooded dryer to intensify the deep conditioner also.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
The last time I braided my hair was last year in 2015. It was braided in a top knot. I wear braids once in a blue moon. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use both wide tooth combs and a Denman brush to detangle my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. I do protective styles when I am staying in for the day. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have had several hair tragedies in my lifetime. One of them was when I had my sew-in cut out of my hair along with my real hair. To recover from it I carried on with my hair regimen as normal. Luckily my hair was thick enough to camouflage the bald spot that was at the top of my head! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? To maintain healthy hair my biggest tip would be to listen to your hair. If your hair is dry moisturize it. If your hair needs a trim cut it off. Hair has a way of telling us what may be wrong and we must listen. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi, my name is Pililo AKA (Pamarow Naturals), I am originally from Zambia but I live in Perth Australia 2. What is your hair type? My Hair type is 4C/B
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have been natural most of my life. In August 2013, after transitioning from texturized/heat damaged hair, I went completely natural 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I have to say the most challenging thing about going natural especially where I am (Perth Australia) was finding products and tools to use for my natural hair. Although a lot of people are going natural, there isn’t much support or resources here for us 5. What is your weekly regimen? I try to stick to my regimen but I can truly say am a lazy natural! When am not so lazy, I co-wash my hair weekly, Deep condition & or oil rinse my hair after which I go ahead and style it in my African threading or a twist out 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the morning I try to keep it simple. If my hair feels dry, then I will moisturise and style it using my water and oil mixture. However, if it doesn’t need moisturisation, I simply fluff, style and go. If I am wearing African threading that week then the morning regimen may be as simple as removing my satin scarf brushing my edges and off I go! 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I like to moisturise my hair with just water and an oil. Sometimes I apply some coconut oil to my scalp and massage it. Hair in a high puff/Pineapple, Satin bonnet on and am off to sleep! 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No heat for me. When I deep condition my hair I sometimes use my blower on top of my towel when my hair is deep conditioning inside to trap heat, for a more effective deep condition!
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes, I braid my hair. I would say half of the year my hair is kinky twists, braids or cornrows. I don’t have a set schedule for braiding though. I usually do it when I want to give my hair a break or when I want to give myself one 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? I would say 50/50. I like to try different things on my hair so I let it loose as much as I tuck and pin it 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Tragedy did indeed trike! I was getting frustrated with my natural hair so I started using a lot of heat on it. Later on someone suggested a texturiser and told me my hair would be softer and yet stay natural. Ignorantly, I did as told and lo and behold, half of my length was gone in a few months. See, I wasn’t re-texturizing my hair so as my natural hair grew, the texturized one fell off. That was when I started researching on how to better care for my kinks. And in August 2013 I cut my hair after transitioning. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? If I had to give three tips I would say: Moisture…Gentle…Patience! For me the topmost however, is GENTLENESS! I find that no matter how much I treat my hair to deep conditions, satin scarfs etc If am rough when dealing with it, it breaks off and length retention would be but a distant thought! My ends also become full of knots and split ends. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).
