1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Maegan Ella and I am from Los Angeles, CA. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is a 3C- Curly Coily! Fine Strands all packed together!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went completely natural in June 2014 and big chopped. I’ve never had a relaxer, but had been pressing/Flat ironing my hair since I was 12! I went natural because I was so tired of being “perfect” all the time. Making sure that my hair had that deep press, frying it once a week and always having to have 100% Indian hair extensions that always cost a pretty penny. Trying to “fit in” and please people that had nothing to do with my inner happiness. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was understanding that your hair will go through so many different stages whether you big chop or transitioned. You have to remember, the hair you have now is the true essence of you, not a quick fix perm or flat iron…you have to devote extra time and dedication to see good results. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Oh my! It changes every few weeks now! Lol! My current weekly regimen consists of me conditioning my hair at least two times a week while adding a small amount water to it everyday. I also add Shea Moistures Raw Shea Butter Extra Moisture Transitioning hair milk for added moisture. I try not to apply too much product all at once because I add some form of product everyday and don’t want it to weigh it down. Separate my hair into many small sections and add Eco Styler Gel. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? WATER! I found that my hair NEEDS a lot of water! I like to wet it in the morning while in the shower and apply a small amount of eco Styler gel to eliminate extra frizz. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My nighttime regimen is very simple. I separate my hair with two loose hair ties and throw on a satin bonnet over it. Temperatures change throughout the night that can also affect your hair, so keeping the bonnet on will never compromise the moisture of your hair. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Unfortunately, I do...but I am changing that now. I am a corporate spokesperson for a major automotive company (…when I’m not talking to my MegaDolls on my youtube channel, Maeganswayinla)… and sometimes will slightly flat iron the hair near my edges to make the wig appear as real as possible. Currently looking into a wig with bangs to completely take all heat out of my regimen.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I don’t braid my hair at all. I definitely want to try it in the near future. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? If I have to choose, it would be the Denman brush… but I mainly use my fingers to detangle. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Funny you ask, this is a really fun time for me. I am literally getting out of wearing my hair loose so much to playing with protective styles. So much fun! 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve never really had a hair tragedy. I’m thinking about coloring my hair soon…let us all hope for the best! Lol. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Do your research. Find out the porosity of your hair & hair type. Once you have an idea of what you’re working with, Invest only in products that you know will work for your specific hair. 14. Kisha L'ray, Los Angeles, CA, USA. 2. What is your hair type? 4C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
About 3 years ago, I wanted to embrace what God gave me! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Honestly nothing really, I decided from the beginning to be patient and enjoy the process of finding what would work best for my hair :) 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually like to leave my hair in a protective style and take it down weekly for a good deep conditioning, a wash if its that time. Then I love to apply my favorite oils, essential oils, and shea butter for moisture on damp hair! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Spritz it with water if it's feeling dry, apply oils if needed. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I make sure I wrap my hair up each night with a satin scarf and I like to spritz it with water for added moisture before wrapping. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? No way!
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Not really, twists are my thing. I'll do a braid out from time to time. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither, I use my fingers for everything! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective-do 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisture, moisture, moisture! 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
I’m Zoé Zeigler, a Los Angeles native that now calls New York City home. 2. What is your hair type? I’ve never been into ‘typing’ my hair really (I favor just calling it curly/kinky). However, based on the established hair types, I fall around the 4a range.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I’ve been ‘natural’ pretty much all my life, however my hair was very damaged from a lifetime of hot comb pressing and weaving. In January 2011, I went heat and weave free. I really did so after (1) I realized how much I was spending on weaves and the beauty salon in any given year and (2) I realized how much I was letting society and men dictate my standards of beauty and decided I’d had enough; I wanted to get in touch with my beauty on my own terms. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most difficult part of going natural/heat-free was learning what worked for my natural curls and establishing a regimen that I could reasonably stick to. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I cut my natural curls into the short tapered curly fro style I have now 2 years ago, 2 years into my natural journey. My weekly regimen now is to co-wash once a week and pretty-much do nothing else to it the rest of the week. I just let my curls be day-to-day. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My morning regimen consists of fluffing my hair lightly with my fingers in the morning for about 20 seconds and that’s it. About every other day I apply a light oil to my hair as I fluff to add shine. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My evening regimen is simply to sleep on a satin pillowcase. I don’t wear a bonnet or scarf because they smash my curls. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Once a week, after washing/co-washing, I diffuse dry my hair on low heat.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I have not braided my hair in many years, but I am planning to get braids for a few weeks this year for a vacation I am going on. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Right now, I only finger comb my hair so I don’t use any products. When my curly hair was longer though, I used both a wide-tooth comb and Denman. I’d use a wide-tooth in the shower to detangle and the Denman after I got out the shower to better distribute my selected product through my hair prior to twisting. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is always loose in the short tapered curly fro style I wear. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve had a hair tragedy in my lifetime. When I was about 12-13 years old I convinced my mother to let me get a Wave Nouveau ‘curly perm’. I was obsessed with Scary Spice and thought a perm was the only way to achieve a similar curly look (I had no idea what a twist out was at the time). It was the only time in my life I ever used straightening chemicals and was a huge mistake! It made all of my hair fall out over about 9 months. I wore braided styles over the next 2-3 years to allow my hair to grow back. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is to experiment to find out what works for you in the beginning, but once you learn, establish a regimen and stick to it. My hair (and my time/schedule) has thanked me for this over my 4 years of being heat-free/natural. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

My Name is Lila Mayes and I am from Los Angeles, California. 2. What is your hair type? I am a true 4C.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I returned to natural in January of 2013. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing has been finding products that moisturize my hair and realizing that my hair changes as it grows. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I usually wash every 2 weeks and co-wash once a week. I wear braid outs, puffs and head wraps during the week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I spritz with water and a leave in conditioner, then decide if I want to wear an afro or a different style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, I use a curl pudding and oil and braid. I sleep in a satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I occasionally blow dry my hair.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do wear braids from time to time. No more than twice a year. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I actually use a Felicia Leatherwood wide-tooth detangle brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is typically loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I have - fortunately I do not remember them. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Both body and hair. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Aisa. I'm from New Jersey and live in Los Angeles, California now. 2. What is your hair type? My hair type is multi-textured It is 4a/4b and 4c and I have 3 textured straight hair on the perimeter. It is mostly high porosity but is also normal porosity in some areas.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
2009 or 2010. Its not clear because it was December-January and I was still clipping. I wasn't "Natural" on purpose. I have always had really short hair and I was trying to stretch a relaxer. It was really breaking off so I cut off the straight ends and was growing it out so I could relax it. It just grew faster than normal (my hair was ear length) and I got excited. I decided to try to see how long it could grow before I relaxed and by then started watching natural hair videos on Youtube. I just never got that relaxer. Lol. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? My hair is bushy, fine, multi-textured hair with high porosity. Finding my moisture/protein balance is challenging and can lead to breakage. Also I just started a fitness channel on youtube so cute styles when working out are hard to come by. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Wash, deep condition, use a leave-in moisturizer and seal with an oil or butter. During the week I spritz water with a moisturizer and may or may not seal with an oil. I also use carrier oils mixed with essential oils on my scalp for stimulation and to ward off psoriasis breakouts. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't really have one. I work the graveyard shift. Lol. I don't get to wear my hair out too often. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I moisturize if my hair needs it and tie it up with either my satin scarf or throw on a satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes. I usually flat iron once of twice a year but I really started to love my blow outs. I haven't used it in a while because I thought that it might have been thinning out my ends. I cut off a lot of hair over a 6 month period to try to thicken my hair up but...apparently I have naturally tapering hair. It's on.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. Wait what kind of braids? Individuals? Cornrows? Thin or thick? I haven't done individuals in probably 2 years because I'm lazy. I do cornrows often enough. I often do my hair in 2 cornrows for work. I haven't done any styled cornrows in a while but I have had my eyes on a style. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb. Denman is death to my fine hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Sadly it is usually up in a protective style even when its not on purpose. I'm a security guard so I can't wear my hair pretty. I often just have it thrown in ugly twists and in a ponytail. Also need it out of the way when I'm exercising. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? More times than not. My hair has sporadically broken off at several points over the years making me cut it. I had a stylist take off more than I wanted and set me back a half year. I had another stylist blow dry my hair with a fine tooth comb and high heat. I was getting it cut because it was raggedy and she made it worse. Right now trying to regrow my length is driving me crazy so that is tragic too. Only way to get over these upsets is to cut off the bad and wait for the new. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keep it moisturized and if something goes horribly wrong out of the blue and you can't fix it...you might need some protein. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hey guys! I’m Bianca Alexa. Born and raised in England, spent half my life in Puerto Rico and now I live in LA, California 2. What is your hair type? I have a mix of 3C to 4B
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
March 2012 was when I did my bigchop. I used to constantly relax and dye my hair, It was pretty long and I loved having my long straight hair, but over time the heat and chemical damage made my hair really thin and at one point my hair began excessively breaking and shedding. My intention wasn’t to go natural I just wanted my hair healthy again. I cut my hair shoulder length with the intent to keep it straight. As I was looking up short haircuts online I came across a natural hair blog and noticed how healthy and thick natural hair looked and that’s what made me decide to go natural. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Accepting myself in all my natural glory. I had never had my hair so short before and I really struggled with it for the first few months. Not only was I unaware that taking care of this new found texture required completely different products compared to what I was using before, I also struggled with finding confidence and redefining my ideal of beauty. I felt like my long hair was my "safety blanket", my "comfort zone"; I think I immediately expected to fall in love with my natural hair, and even though it took some time I ended up discovering so much about myself in the process. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I’m a no fuss kinda girl, I cowash my hair every 4 to 5 days. I don’t rewet my hair in between washes or add any moisturizer to my hair until I’m going to rewash it again. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? This ones easy! I just fluff out my hair using my fingers and I’m good to go. I also tend to pull at the ends of my curls constantly throughout the day, it helps with shrinkage. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I leave my hair loose and sleep on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Just recently I flat ironed my hair because I was curious to see what it would look like. It’s been over 2 years since I’ve applied any sort of direct heat on my hair so it is definitely not something I do often. I made a YouTube video on it to document my process.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I love French braids I do them quite frequently, especially if I need to deep condition my hair and don’t have time to wash out the conditioner I will just do 2 quick French braids and take them out the next day to wash my hair. One of my favorite braid hairstyles is the crown braid. You can find a tutorial on my YouTube channel on how I achieve the style. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I’m a finger detangler but if I had to pick one I would say wide-tooth comb, only because I haven’t tried the Denman brush so I can’t really say if its good or not. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Loose! Give me big frizzy hair all day every day! I love my wash and goes. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Oh gosh yes, where do I start? I’m surprised I still have hair with all the crap I used to put it through. So this was back when I was in collage, I would always do my hair myself (dye, cut, blow-dry, flat iron) everything. My natural hair color is black but for the longest time I had the top half of my hair dyed strawberry blonde, it was such a fun color but I would constantly switch it up to dark red or brown. After a while I dyed my hair black only to bleach it blonde a week later and as you can imagine my hair did not take well to that, I had so much breakage and damage the front part of my hair was probably an inch long. I had to use so many bobby pins to slick the front down until it eventually grew out. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I would say be consistent with your regime and pay attention to your hairs needs. Taking the time to properly detangle your hair can save you from unnecessary breakage in the long run, and also helps save on conditioner which is a plus. You should find a few low manipulation styles that you feel comfortable with. Just being patient with your journey and gentle with your hair can help prevent breakage that will aid in retaining your length. 14. Where can we find you online? 1. What's your name and where are you from?
Hi! My name is Roshell D. (kinkycurlsLA). I’m Los Angeles born and bred. 2. What is your hair type? Hair typing isn’t my thing. I have kinky curly hair. [NenoNatural: perhaps 4A with some 4B?]
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
On September 24, 2011, I chopped my hair off. I use that as my official “I went natural date”, although my hair happened to be natural already. I went “natural” because of frustration and convenience. On August 31, 2013, I big chopped again to save time maintaining my hair. The second time around I went with a tapered cut. I’m currently growing it out because I miss my hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Tuning out the noise others make about your decision is a challenge in the beginning. While I learned my hair and how to maintain it, people showered me with questions and compliments. Unfortunately, most skeptics were family and friends. Compliments often came from strangers and other races. [NenoNatural: so often the case!] 5. What is your weekly regimen? For the last month or so, I wash and deep condition once a week. I blow dry my hair, install Curlformers. If the curls look bad before wash day, I pull them up into a puff or do a twist out. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? The morning is easy breezy. I refresh the style by fixing misplaced hair, create more volume with a pick comb if anything has been flattened from sleeping, then I go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I pineapple my curls using a silk scarf and it’s time for shut-eye. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes. I have flat-ironed my hair about 6 times in the last 3 years. In the beginning I avoided blow-drying, but for the last four months I have been blow-drying my hair often instead of air-drying.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
Yes. So far, once or twice a year, I install box braids. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Finger comb! When I had a teeny weenie afro, the Denman brush saved my life. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It’s normally loose. I try to keep my hair moisturized to avoid damage. Every once in a while I wear protective styles. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Hair tragedy? Not since being natural. I have had bad hair days and I just alter the style. For example: If my twist out is horrid, I put it in a puff or pin sections up. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? To maintain healthy hair you have to maintain the hair. Keep a clean scalp, moisturized hair and healthy ends. Drink lots of water and eat well, healthy hair starts on the inside. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
Victoria Sanders. I am from Washington DC & Alabama but I live in LA now. 2. What is your hair type? 3C
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I've been natural my entire life. Never ever had a relaxer or any other type of chemical alteration done to my hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Well, since I didn't "go natural" I can't answer this. However, I can say this...Before being natural became such a phenomena it was VERY hard to find products that worked in my hair. I was extremely self conscious about my big, frizzy hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I start by deep conditioning weekly with a homemade concoction (1 egg, half a banana, olive oil, honey). I leave this on my hair for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Then I steam my hair with my Q-Redew steamer, then co-wash my hair with Heavenly Scents opulently organic conditioner (I mix about 2 tablespoons of castor oil in the jar). If I'm doing a WNG I'll use Kinky Curly Knot Today, coconut oil, and then scrunch with Curls gel. I normally co-wash my hair about 2-3 times a week depending on how dry I feel my hair is. And I steam my hair at least twice a week. Also, I follow the Curly Girl method, so I don't use shampoo or any products that contain silicones or sulfates. I make sure to get my ends trimmed when they need it. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? In the mornings I take my pineapple down and refresh my curls by misting them with a little water & vegetable glycerin (that I mix in a spray bottle) and I'll pick my curls out a little. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? If I have a wash and go, I simply pineapple and sleep on a satin pillowcase. I HATE scarves and bonnets, but I always sleep on my satin pillowcase. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat on my hair about once every 6 months or so, I will flat iron it to see how long it is. I only blow dry my hair if I'm in a complete rush and don't want to leave with my hair soaking wet.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I do braid my hair. Probably about once a year, I think it's a fun way to change it up a bit, and a great way to protective style. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? BOTH!!! Wide tooth comb to detangle (especially in the shower), and Denman to evenly distribute the product in my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? It's about 50/50. Whenever I'm home with nothing to do my hair is ALWAYS in a protective style. I only let my hair out if I'm going somewhere. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Hmmmmm...Not really a tragedy, but I did cut my hair about a year & a half ago & I HATED the growing out phase. It was really cute short, but it was hard to get past that awkward length. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Maintain a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. You can put nothing but great things on your hair, but if you are putting trash in your body, your hair will definitely suffer. Eat healthy, take vitamins, try not to stress, and work out. All of these things will help your hair grow and tay healthy much more than any product you can buy to put on it. 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc).

1. What's your name and where are you from?
I go by Nia. It's just easier. I was born in Nigeria. I grew up in Atlanta GA and I now currently live in Los Angeles. 2. What is your hair type? 4b, 4c, 4z. My strands are super fine with high porosity. My density is normal to fine. :)
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
This is my second time going natural. My first time was in 2001/2002. My roommate had this amazing halo of fro and I wanted to see if my hair could do the same thing. I had a relapse with a wave nouveau in 2006-2008. Worst decision ever. I started on my natural healthy hair journey again in 2010. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Just how much my hair tangles. I can spend hours detangling and then find out within minutes my hair is still clingy to itself. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I moisturize daily. I wash and deep condition weekly or biweekly. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If it is in a bun from the previous night, I just undo my scarf. It it was in plaits, I undo them and put it in a bun. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I give myself a good scalp massage (5-10 minutes). I moisturize and seal with what I have available. Then I will braid it 4-5 sections and tie with a satin scarf. If my hair is in a bun I won't touch my hair. I just tie it up with a silk scarf so I will be ready for the morning. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have not used blow dryers, flat irons, hot combs, in over 5 years. I do use a heated bonnet and steamer for deep conditioner sessions that are weekly to biweekly.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I did do my own set of Havana twists this year and had urban twists put in by the Damn Salon. But, it had been over 3 years since my last braid or sew-in weave. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Neither. I use my fingers. When I have used tools in the past, it just rips my hair to pieces. Literally, there will be pieces of hair all over the place. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective styles. Buns or lace front wigs. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? The wave nouveau was a big tragedy. My hair was coming out in clumps. I stopped getting the chemical treatments and vowed never to put chemicals in my hair again. I deep conditioned my hair and put it in protective styles I did have a lady that put in a beautiful sew in that snatch my edges and I was able to get them to grow back some by massaging with different oils and wearing wigs to give my hair a rest. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Keep your hair protected and well conditioned. Long healthy hair is not achieved by "fast hair growth" but hair preservation! [A fantastic way of looking at it! Heather x] 14. Where can we find you online? (blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc) Get your FREE ebook on How To Grow Long, Healthy Natural Kinky or Curly Hair.
