I went natural in March of 2015; am the reason I went natural is because of the fact that my new relaxer which was PROFECTIV was making my hair shed and thin. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was having to deal with two different hair textures because I didn’t do the BIG CHOP; I transitioned. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I have no special weekly treatment because most times, am on a protective styling though most times I try to clean it by washing but when not on protective styling, I wash every two weeks with black soap and I deep condition with heat before LOCing my hair. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily treatment is massaging my hair with essential oils and pressing down my edges. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? My night time regimen when not on protective styling is sealing my hair and protecting it with my satin bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Since I went natural, the only time I use heat is when I am deep conditioning.

I braid my hair like 4 times in a year. When I am not carrying my natural hair or on braids, I am on weaves and wigs. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide tooth comb for my hair. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally on a protective hair do. I only wear my hair loose when u feel like I have gone too long on a protective styling and I want my scalp and my hair to breathe. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes, I have had a hair tragedy and it happened early this year. I had traction alopecia and like a large number of my front hair was gone and my front hair looked like I had receding hairline. I made use of of JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL, TEA RINSE, ONION+GARLIC+GINGER RINSE. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining long and healthy hair are good detangling, washing the hair in section, deep conditioning especially with heat, use of satin bonnet and protective styling. 14. I started going natural the summer before my freshman year of college. This was the perfect opportunity for me to start fresh, learn about myself, and start loving myself the way God created me. I wanted long healthy hair and I was so inspired by watching YouTube videos of people sharing their hair journeys. Although some people were unsupportive of my decision, I didn't care because in the long run my opinion was the only one that mattered and I was going natural regardless. Also, I thought if I can't even love my own hair, how will I expect my future daughter to do the same...I have to set a good example:) 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? It was hard for me to be patient. I got frustrated a lot during the transitioning phase because it was hard dealing with my 2 hair textures (natural roots and permed ends). It made it difficult to detangle and challenging to style. I just wanted my hair to grow fast! 5. What is your weekly regimen?
6. What is your daily morning regimen? I don't really do anything. I just style my hair for the day if it's not already in a protective style. 7. What is your daily night time regimen?
8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Very rarely. I Straighten my hair once a year and occasionally blow dry.

Yes, I put in box braids once or twice a year because it's one of my favorite protective styles. It's perfect for my active lifestyle. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I love how the Denman brush brings out my curls but.....WIDE-TOOTH COMB HANDS DOWN if we are talking about detangling! 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective style. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? My hair started falling out after I got the Keratin Treatment! The stylist said the reason my hair was falling out was because I was brushing my hair too much/too hard when I was wrapping it at night...that was not the case. I recovered by leaving her salon, getting trim and stopping the treatments altogether. I just had to be patient and wait for my hair to grow back. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? MOISTURIZE! Having moisturized hair prevents shedding and it's the secret to making detangling easier. 14. Where can we find you online? I went natural in 2013 after watching some natural hair styling tutoriasl. I tried them out on my relaxed hair and was very upset because it wasn't as beautiful on relaxed hair. I ended up big chopping without transitioning. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing for me is the shrinkage and all the tangling that comes with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? My hair lives mostly in protective styles, but when it's out I deep condition weekly, and shampoo fortnightly. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I simply refresh my curls with my moisturizer or leave in conditioner. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I use the LOC method at night. I spray with water, and then lock the moisture in with coconut oil and either my leave in or organic shea butter. Sometimes I leave the oil out, because I don't want my hair to get too oily. So most times it's the LC method for me. :). I never forget to sleep with my satin scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I blow dry my hair whenever I don't have time to stretch it without heat.

I used to wash my hair with bathing soap because I didn't realise I needed to care for short hair just the same way I cared for long hair, so my tiny hair then was breaking like crazy. Depends with the hairstyle. Well, when I have Minitwists on, usually I will spritz some water and I’m good to go. Remember, Water is has to be your hair’s best friend It’s the best moisturizer! If it’s not in a protective hairstyle then I will Set the hair the previous night in Twist-Outs or Bantu knots or flat-twist Basically whichever way I want Using my whipped Shea butter mixture which has (Olive oil, Castor oil, Jojoba oil , Coconut oil,) In it, Spitz some water as I set. 3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I decided to do the big chop on September 12th, 2014. It'll be three years this year. I'm so proud of myself. What made me go natural? I became impatient with trying to find hairstyles and haircuts that fit me. It was a lot to deal with and I honestly thought it was more work than being natural. So I told my mother I wanted to cut all of my hair off. Although she didn’t take me seriously. I continued to push the thought and it happened. My older sister went with me to a barbershop. That day changed my life. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural is having patience. I'm impatient as impatient gets. Learning that the process doesn't happen overnight and disciplining myself to not cut my hair in any way really taught me about growth. Not only hair growth but self-growth. I never had a doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be able to grow my hair back. Since I was so dedicated to having beautiful curls, doubt never crossed my mind. Not knowing what would be ahead of me, I really didn't care because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Wow um, my weekly hair regimen….hm, that's hard. I sleep on a satin pillow case always. It really helps because sometimes I'm super lazy and I don't feel like putting my hair up. Depending on how I feel, I'll wash my hair every two weeks (with conditioner/deep conditioner). I shampoo my hair every 3-6 months. A majority of times, I wash my hair at the end of every month. Everyone's hair care is different. I, personally, don't have to wash my hair as much (blessings). Lol, but when I do decide to wash my hair, I wash with a homemade avocado hair mask. That includes honey, and as many oils as you like. My favorite oils to use are Tea Tree Oil, Moroccan Oil, Avocado Oil, Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Carrot Oil, Aloe Vera Oil, Macadamia Oil, Amla Oil (Sally's Beauty Supply sells most of these oils for about $3-5). Hot Oil Treatments are a life saver. I do them every week. I suggest all of my curly gals and guys to do the same. You'll see amazing results. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? My daily morning regimen depends on what I have to do that day. So if I'm having a chill day at home, I'll leave my hair up in a pineapple do or two buns. Just to keep it out of my face. If I have to be somewhere whether it be an event or a party or I'm going out with friends, I usually leave my hair out. I don't moisturize my hair EVERY day. I moisturize whenever my hair is dry and brittle or hard to manage. That's every 2-4 days. Plus, always having your hands in your hair causes split ends and breakage, so it's good to just let it be whenever you don't have anything important to do. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I don't have a special night time regimen. I just have to make sure my hair is out of my face. Since my forehead is acne prone. And because I use a lot of different oils in my hair, that shows, so I wash my face twice a day to keep away dirt and oil. If I'm bored, I'll experiment with my hair. Like trying different hairstyles I picked up from Natural Hair Youtubers. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I don’t use heat often. Only when I want to do a blowout. That's rare. I haven't used heat in over a year. Which is such an accomplishment for me because before going natural I was addicted to using heat on my hair. I love my curls too much to ruin them. Heat isn't bad at all. Just make sure you don't use it a lot.

I don't braid my hair at all. Lol, it hurts. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I've never tried a Denman brush but the wide-toothed comb is cool. I don’t use it often. It does help with detangling. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. Whenever my hair is in a protective style, my choice would be twisted. A good twist out always makes me happy. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Since being natural I've had two hair tragedies and they both involve being "scissor happy". I had to trim my ends (which I always do myself and I'm a master at it now). But I cut too much off and my hair was so uneven. I had to wait 3 months for my hair to grow back to actually take my time cutting it. It was a disaster. I was so unhappy with the end result. My second hair tragedy happened 2 months ago. Once again I cut too much hair off and my hair looked choppy. A major mess. I didn't get discouraged this time around, though. I decided to wait it out. I ended up liking the look, after all, lol. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? MY BIGGEST TIP FOR MAINTAINING HEALTHY HAIR: Do not cut your hair if you do not have to and make sure you take care of your hair. If you decide to go natural or convert from perms, you have to be serious about taking care of your hair. It's a lot of work but so much fun if you don't look at it as a chore. I went natural in my senior year in high school (2011). I did it because my hair had started breaking off severely from a perm that I didn't properly care for. I started doing my research and decided to transition. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Hmmmm, probably all the trial and error that takes place. All the time and money spent trying to find the right products and regimen that suits your hair can be frustrating and expensive. That's the part I hated. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I cowash once a week and deep condition on the weekends. I try to keep my hair in protective styles and out of the way so that it's safe from harm of the elements and the fact that I play in it all day lol 6. What is your daily morning regimen? If my hair is in a braid out or twist out, I coat my hands with coconut oil and untwist my hair then style and go. If I'm being lazy, which is most of the time, I throw on one of my wigs and go about my day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Ughhh I hate doing my hair at night! But usually, I spritz my hair with a little bit of water and follow up with an oil or moisturizer depending on what my hair needs and I proceed to style. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, I blow dry my hair a couple of times a month when I wanted a stretched style. I rarely straighten my hair, maybe every two years or so.

I loooooove protective styles because it keeps my hair safe from wear and tear, it's not bothering me and it make my morning and night time routines easier. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I got a perm one week and put braids in the next. Dumbest thing I've ever done. When I took those braids out a month later, so much of my hair came out with it. That's when I began to transition to natural. I also got heat damage my sophomore year in college, but I just took that as an opportunity to cut my hair off and try something new. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Paying attention to your hair and keeping it moisturized. Know when its time to give your hair a break, know when you need your ends trimmed and know when you need intense treatments. 14. I went natural in 2012. I wore my hair in a lot of twist outs during the summer to give my hair a break from heat, not realizing that was the beginning of me transitioning lol. After a few months with no heat, I was inspired by a couple of natural hair gurus on Youtube and that is when I decided to really go natural. I was tired of straightening my hair. I hated the process actually, but back then I felt like if my hair was straightened I was more beautiful and would be accepted more. I decided to make my own beauty standard and didn't care what others thought anymore. Here is my hair story
4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing for me was learning how to care for my hair. I never actually did my hair in it's natural state, I only knew how to do my hair straightened so I literally had to learn how to do my hair as an adult and I had to figure out what worked and what didn't work for my hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I wash or co-wash my hair weekly or bi-weekly, depending on if I have a lot of product build up or not. I usually pre-poo before washing my hair to make detangling easier. Most of the time I will two-strand twist my hair or wear an updo until my next wash. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Before leaving the house I make sure I apply moisturizer. Since I have type 4 hair it is essential that I moisturize daily, so I refresh my hair with a moisturizing mist or cream. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Before bed all I do is put a bonnet on, or I'll just sleep on a satin pillowcase. I only twist my hair the day I wash it, I do not twist my hair every night. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes I blow dry my hair. The very first year I did not use any heat at all, I just let my hair air dry. Now I blow dry my hair twice a month at the most. I have a lot of shrinkage, so if I want to wear a certain style I will blow dry my hair first to stretch it. I love how my twist outs look when my hair is blow dried first because my hair looks really fluffy and it is easier for me to wear updos when my hair is blow dried. I do not braid my hair, I haven't had it braided since going natural actually. I do want to start wearing braid outs though, so I will start braiding my hair soon. 10. How did you recover from it? I haven't had a hair tragedy while natural, but when I used to straighten my hair I broke my hair off and damaged my hair by using way too much heat. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Moisturize, low manipulation and trim when necessary. I do not detangle my hair everyday and I do not detangle when my hair is dry, that can cause a lot of breakage. I also do not wear super tight hair styles that will pull at my edges. Keeping your hair moisturized will keep you from experiencing breakage, especially in harsh summers and winters. Also, a lot of people aren't retaining length because they trim their hair too much. On average, hair grows a half inch a month, if you are trimming every 3 months you are trimming your growth; half an inch a month x 3 months = 1.5 inches every 3 months on average, so if you are trimming too much you probably won't see growth. I always tell people to TRIM WHEN NECESSARY. If you go 3 months and you don't need a trim, then don't trim. If you take good care of your edges and moisturize often, you will find that you won't need to trim your hair as much. Keep and eye on your ends and make sure you are keeping them healthy. Ends are the oldest part of our hair so they are more susceptible to breakage and damage. On the other hand, if you are not trimming your hair when you need to you also won't see growth. Your hair will break off really easily and you will not retain your length, so keep an eye on your hair and trim when you know you should! 14. Where can we find you online? I went natural January 25th 2014. I actually didn’t plan on going natural but I really wanted to see how my hair looked like in its natural state and now I’m here, 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Most challenging thing was finding affordable products that were made for natural hair. Took me about 6 months to a year to find products that work for my hair and a regimen to go with it. 5. What is your weekly regimen? It is more of every two weeks. I cleanse, condition and deep condition my hair. Follow that up with the LCO/LOC method as I install a protective style, e.g.; flat twists or twists. Second week I rock the twist out for 2-3 days then wash my hair on Sunday. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every other morning, I spritz my hair with a mixture of water & eucalyptus oil. Followed by a bit of coconut oil on my ends. I love me some coconut oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Every other night, I just massage some castor oil onto my scalp, tie my silk/satin scarf and go to bed. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I have fear heat damage, so only once a year during my hair anniversary.

I stopped braiding as school decided to take over my life. But when I do, I braid twice a year. And it’s usually box braids or Senegalese twists. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb all day, every day. But I wouldn’t mind trying out the Denman brush. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Mostly a protective do. My hair has a mind of its own and the less my hair is out, the better for the both of us. But when all else fails, the turban comes to the rescue. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Fairy knots, fairy knots, do I need to say more. Late 2015, I noticed my hair had more single knots than usually and it was due to the extreme heat that was only beginning. So, I gave myself a fresh trim, removed about half an in inch all round and started wearing protective styles to protect my ends.And so far, so good. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is to listen and know your hair. Each single one of us has different hair; no two strands are the same. So, take the tips and advice given and makethemwork for your hair. I have frizzy, high porosity hair, so I learnt to touch my hair only when needed and not to overdo it with moisturizing. 14. I went natural sometime in September 2013. I had just finished my 2nd year at the University of Nairobi and a lot of things in my life had changed. I needed a new start and a fresh approach to things in my life generally, and chopping my relaxed and weak hair was top on the list. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? At the very beginning, I had no idea about what to do with my short and all natural hair. Being a member of the legal profession that is a bit strict as well as a lover of art which has room for creative energy, I found myself in a dilemma on how to style my hair and yet not conform to set societal standards. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I currently wash my hair once a week. I prepoo, shampoo, co-wash, and deep condition then apply a generous amount of coconut oil/olive oil before styling as desired. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? This depends on what style I am rocking. If my hair is open, then I try different styles ranging from bantu knots to twist outs and hair puffs. On a daily basis, I moisturize and apply olive and coconut oil using my spray bottle. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I apply shea butter to my strands at night and do chunky twist outs, massage the scalp and cover up using a satin bonnet, and for the extra protection, I sleep on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, At least twice a year but only if I really need to.

1. What's your name and where are you from?
I'm Shenelle Taylor. Born and Raised in the lovely island of Trinidad and Tobago. Now I'm currently in S.Flo 2. What is your hair type? My texture is a mixture of all 4's. My crown is 4c and my front is 4b and the back is 4a
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
Since I moved here my hair wasn't growing thick anymore. It was just growing and not getting any thicker, so eventually I just stopped relaxing my hair to see if that help. About a year and 5 months after I decided to chop everything off. I've been natural for about 4 years now 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Lol everything!!! You have to learn your hair like what your hair likes, how often to moisturizer and when to comb through it! It's defiantly a different monster from relaxed hair. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I was my hair every weekend and also deep condition. My low porosity hair loves that! 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Every other morning I take down my pineapple and just refresh it with some Shea Moisture hair milk. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Every night I tie it up with a silk cap in a pineapple style to maintain my style. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I do use heat on my hair but NOT often. If I twist or braid my hair late in the day then yes I will use heat to dry it before I go to bed.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I braid my hair maybe once a year not to often. I miss my hair a lot if I do braids or twist in it lol 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I definitely use a width tooth comb on my hair in the shower with conditioner in it. Once it's combed out I use a denman brush 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Protective due over the weekend then during the week it's loose 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Fortunately I haven't had one of those since I was natural. When I first started styling my hair it was a bit difficult but I still end up having a nice curl thank God! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? Make sure and deep condition and use oils! Natural hair tend to get dry really quickly due to the curls. It takes a longer time for the natural oils from the roots to get down to the ends. So that extra oil and moisture to the ends of the hair is needed. 14. Where can we find you online?
